I don't root for the other MAC schools, especially Akron. In basketball, a team can get in simply by winning, therefore it really doesn't matter for a league like the MAC to have more than one strong team. So, I can actively root for Akron to get smoked because I don't like anything about them. It actually makes me smile to see their season end like this.

If we are talking about recruiting, how can Akron possibly claim they are a better program than us if you use the past five years as a measuring stick? I'll take our past four years, the Convo and Athens over anything they can come up with. I would hope the recruits we are trying to get recognize the difference, too.

That would be a great way to think if your goal is simply to win a bad conference and then likely face the same fate in the NCAA Tournament. I'd rather the whole league perform at a high level and for Ohio to elevate itself to the top of an improved league.

Drinking tonight, smoking pot, or both?

Why are they better? They beat us 3 times this year!!

Idiotic post of the year nominee.

Harsh, but I agree. Akron did more to lose credibility tonight than us losing the MAC title game and going to the NIT. The national media is making a JOKE of the Zips right now...and for good reason.

Our program - from both a historical and recent standpoint - remains ahead of theirs. And that's just fine with me!

Of course my heart would love to join you guys in reveling in Akron's demise but my brain won't let me because while the nation is ridiculing the Zips tonight, they're ridiculing the MAC right along with them.

The problem is, why shouldn't they? Akron is our lone NCAA rep and they lose by 46. OU is the lone NIT rep and they bow out in the first round without hardly a whimper. And to think, those were the only two "good" teams in the MAC all year who literally steam rolled everybody else for the entire season. Goes to show just how pitiful the rest of the league really was.

So no, as much as I want to, I just can't be happy about this loss tonight. It was flat out embarrassing for the league and a reality check that our program was 0 for 3 against THAT team.

Speaking of reality checks, how did Belmont do today? They killed us and all I heard was "yeah but they're REALLY good. They're an NCAA tournament team!"  Oops. While we're at it how about Memphis? They barely escaped. If Oklahoma bows out tomorrow, our NCAA tourney opponents will have laid a collective egg which makes us look even worse.

Edit: Forgot to add UMass got stomped in the first round of the NIT by the basketball powerhouse Stony Brook. Good lord.

I'm didn't necessarily want Akron to win, but I certainly didn't want them to get blown out and become the laughing stock of the NCAA tourny this year. We lost to them by almost 20 in the MAC tourny. This loss doesn't make us look very good either.

I'm pretty much ambivalent about the tourney (although I did pick VCU on both my brackets) but I don't see much good in Akron getting blown out.  It says loads about our 0-3 record against them this year.  If the MAC is ever to be more than a one-bid league -- which helps our prospects for getting into the NCAA every year -- the entire league (or a goodly portion of it) needs to improve, which means recruiting better players.  Which would do more for MAC recruiting in general -- tourney wins vs. G'town, Mich & USF and taking UNC into OT, or losing in the opening round to VCU by 46 points?  With more than 300 schools in D1, good players who aren't picked up by the big conferences have a lot more options for playing closer to home than they used to.  Getting blown out in the first round of the tourney doesn't help the MAC's prospects for getting any of them.

The media wanted to love Akron. They overplayed the effect of the PG loss. I personally do not think the MAC got a hit from this. I think Akron got served. Punks that have our number. CBS really tried to feel sorry for Akron but at the end of the day Akron had two players suspended so you have to look at character a bit. The sickness issue was a smokescreen.  VCU is very smooth, they go over you, under you and through you. Did anyone notice Zeke?  VCU didn't either.

Don't like to see anyone lose by more points than ever recorded in the NCAA but VCU is very good. Looking forward to the game with Michigan.

Although I will be the first to admit that I am not an Akron fan, I am in the camp that last night's train wreck that was Akron/VCU did nothing to improve the MAC in the eyes of the general public.  If anything I would believe that it only served to confirm in the average fan's eyes that the MAC is a joke of a conference and probably not even worthy to be labeled a "mid-major".  Our loss in the NIT coupled with the smackdown that Akron took on primetime national tv last night makes the MAC as a conference look pathetic at best.  And yes, even though the MAC was not mentioned directly that much last night, it was guilt by association.  Most people, right or wrong, will judge you by the company you keep.

I agree with Borna's post.  I never once heard the CBS folks talking about the conference, and I haven't read anything about it yet either.  In fact, I think I recall a  moment during the game when they were mentioning OUr Sweet 16 run while Akron was getting crushed.  I love that for a little while, it shuts them up.  Next year, perhaps instead of spending so much focus some like #ThinkBigger, their fans will just worry about winning, and keeping starting players from selling so much Mary Jane.

(side note- I think the Twitter marketing the Akron AD did was brilliant.  I just can't stand the fans)

Wasn't able to watch the game.  But have to believe that media and others also have to be thinking, "how can this team from the MAC get so smoked (no pun intended), when Ohio went so far last year?"  The difference in results is something I'm sure the Akron board is also aware of.

Well.... that embarrassing loss should at least quiet their talk about their basketball program being too big for the MAC.  Maybe they'll realize their 0-4 NCAA and 2-5 NIT records aren't enough lipstick on their program yet.

Oh....wait....nevermind.

The Akron loss hurts us. We need the MAC to do well in post-season tourneys, and not just for a year here or there. The MAC gains some respect, if only just a little, if Akron could have won, or at least made a good showing, fresh off the heals of Ohio's performance last year. They mentioned Ohio last night in during the Akron game. All this blowout does for the national pundits is reduce Ohio's performance last year to an anomoly, which it may have been, but that still does not help the MAC's reputation in the bigger picture.

Memphis - won 1st round NCAA - BARELY. The powerhouse of St. Mary's had a shot to win with 2 ticks left.
Belmont - lost 1st round NCAA - And got smoked.
Akron - lost 1st round NCAA - And got a historically bad beat down.
Robert Morris - won 1st round NIT (over Kentucky) - Good win
UMass - lost 1st round NIT - And got rolled by powerhouse Stony Brook
Richmond - won 1st round CBI - What is this CBI acronym you speak of?
Western - won 1st round CBI - Say huh?
Kent State - won 1st round CIT - Oh wait is this that tournament I saw The Plains in the other day?
Oakland - lost 1st round CIT - See above.

Fixed it for you. The CBI and CIT are a joke that nobody cares about except the players and family in it. No point in even referring to them. Nobody really cares about the NIT either until you get to MSG honestly.

So let's refresh. In the only tournament that people care about to this point our opponents are 1-2 with the lone victory being by 2 while the L's have been by 46 and 17. As I said IF Oklahoma loses today, our NCAA opponents will have done the equivalent of wetting themselves.

Only good win of the whole bunch was Bobby Mo.

I don't think it diminishes what we did, but it sure makes the MAC look bad.  It continues the fact that Ohio has the only NCAA wins by a MAC team since Kent went to the 16.

What CBS may or may not have said last night is irrelevant.  Potential recruits out there had to see the game as the runner-up in the A10 pummeling the MAC champ in a game more befitting a 16-1 matchup.  It was the worst beating by a team seeded third or lower in NCAA tourney history, until Syracuse demolished Montana later in the day.  Teams from other leagues manage to lose key players and get by against good teams (like UNC last year).  Akron's loss showed a lack of depth and maybe a lack of heart.

This really isn't that strange of a place for akron. In 2009 and 2010 they lost by 13 in the first round.  Not blow outs I guess but still double digits.

Last time Kent was in the tournament they scored the lowest first half total (10) in HISTORY.

The reality is that the MAC, ourselves included are the underdogs, and likely will be for a very long time (Which I am kinda ok with, it makes our wins more special).

As such we are going to see more of these embarrassing performances than we are going to see sweet 16 seasons.

I don't think the Akron loss hurts Ohio at all.  The only positive comments about Akron in the second half were the comments about Ohio's run last year and that Akron is in the same league.

I agree with Borna and the punk attitude of Akron.  It is hard to like them or respect them.

All that being said, the MAC is what it is right now.  Ohio cannot take on the role of saving the MAC but it can keep being at the top of the MAC take on teams outside the conference with respectable showings.  Until and unless Ohio does dominates the league and consistently wins a fair share of marquee OOC games we will just be a damn good MAC team.  Being a damn good MAC team is better than being a bad MAC team but it is not what most of us want.

Related to another thread of BA theme songs, Steve Earle has a song titled "I Ain't Ever Satisfied" that I think is appropriate.

Graff I am gonna agree to disagree with ya here because I really like your posts and respect what you bring here. During the VCU game they actually referred to the CBI win as being the catalyst for VCU's resurgence and current run.....I heard a few references to CBI and CIT on the resumes of programs in the tourney this year....the announcers working for the NCAA/CBS are making them talking points so........someone is referring to them.

Programs and coaches that are in transition and needing reps and time to develope teams and players see the value in playing those games and getting the extra practices and tourney win or go home situations. YOu may be right that the only fans that care are friends and family .....that may be absolutely true.

I, as a junkie use them to look at which programs are poised to move up. I get to see young players and listen tothe peices and then watch the recruiting to see if they get the peices that will be able to surround those players and try to figure out which programs have Momentum. Programs have momentum....they are regressing, expanding or stagnant. I would say we are stillprogressing , maybe slower than we were but I would call Akron stagnant. They are doing what they have done for 7 years in my eyes. Dayton befuddles me while Wright that took no bid the last go round grabbed one under Donlon,. I think Wright has a bit of mo. while I can't figure out the decision by SDayton not to spend extra time with thier team.

The CBI and Cit let me see the next level and what they are doing.

We got good press during the Davidson game, they mentioned Ohio being the last team at 14 seed to pull an upset over a 3 (Georgetown) and showed Bassett hitting a 3.
