Most observers think we would benefit by driving to the basket more.

Now that Walt and DJ, our best two drivers, are finished, will we be able to improve this aspect next season?  I know that Ric and TJ are pretty good at getting to the basket at times, and Nick showed flashes of that ability this year.

The problem for DJ and Walt (as well as nic and the others at various times this year) was they drove to the basket but often could not finish at the rim. Seemed like a lot of blocked shots (does Akron and Denver come to mind).  So, rather than "driving to the basket", I'd like someone who can either FINISH or give me an "and1" at the rim.

Stevie seemed to get better at driving to the basket as the season wore on

Hope I'm wrong, but I don't ever see Stevie being a 20+ minute guy for us. The transfer from Tech better be able to play.

I always thought Walt was the best at finishing on drives to the basket.  He didn't just drive to the basket, he flew to the basket.  I think he'd be in the NBA already if he didn't have knee problems.  Kid had pure hops before his injuries.

I'll tell ya where we'll go. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' bout a little place called... ATHENS.

I think you are wrong. I think we have only scratched the surface of what this kid can do. Unfortunately, he had to spend two years behind the best PG we've ever had. I like what I saw from him in more minutes later in the season. shooting with more confidence, more in control.

I agree. He has very tangible ball handling skills and has great ability getting to the basket. He also has the gift of being able to take over the game defensively and will his team to play with more tenacity. Stevie is the kind of guy that will provide immeasurable leadership the next two years.

I wish Walt had driven to the basket more often, especially when he was on the baseline. He had that quick step and was strong enough to finish.

I agree that Stevie made progress. I think he'll be fine. He's so quick he should be able to get into the lane a lot. If people use D.J. as the only measuring stick, they probably won't be happy with what Stevie does, as will be the case with every point guard we have in the future. Let Stevie play and judge him by who he is, not who he isn't.

Stevie really showed progress during the last half of the season.  Having DJ as a big brother for two years was an enormous benefit for him.  Early on, if he drove the lane the ball would get stripped nine times out of ten.  That didn't happen against the trees late in the season.  I expect him to improve tremendously in the off season.

I agree with Pataskala that Stevie improved significantly over the year on offense.  He should spend the entire offseason working on a floater.  If he can add that to his repertoire he could be deadly in the paint.  He seems to get there regularly but he gets a ton of shots blocked once he's there.

Love his on ball defensive intensity, but has to cut out the fouls 35' from the hoop.

Leon - go look at Stevie's pedigree. It will be a step down, but not nearly as much as most people think.

The question is not whether Stevie has the quickness or ability to get into the lane.  He can.  The question is can a 5'8" point guard can get the ball in the basket amongst the trees or dish to an open guy.

I live in Gahanna and have been watching Stevie play for years. At Gahanna Lincoln , he played fast and seemed like he was out of control many times but got away with it because he was not always against superior athletes. Still, he was the best point guard that I had seen around here for a while. He did play with a high confidence level and wanted the ball in crucial situations. Gahanna basketball fans here remember the dismantling of Northland in "10 and the Stevie Taylor -Trey Burke dual in "11. These were huge games ,with him in charge, against far superior opponents.

His freshman year  at OU he played with the same high octane abandon but was not able to get away with some of the moves or shots because the size and talent level increase he was playing against. What he did between his freshman year and sophmore years is adjust his game and get better. As a sophmore, I think his confidence level(swagger) was back and he looked like the kid at Gahanna that I remembered. He played with much better control and made smarter decisions because he was willing to harness his natural atheltic ability with a improved mental approach.

Stevie had a great mentor in DJ and I  think he  will have a breakout year next year. He will be our floor leader and WANT the ball at the end of games. I have seen him do it!

Changing the subject a bit...I love the way the IU guards get thru that high post pick.  No lazy defense there, they play it the way I like to see it played.  Result: no mismatches and no open guys rolling to the rim.
