Why the continued anti vs playing mids early in the year.

it seems a lot of Mac schools end up with 8 or 10 non conf games vs comp that is a step down.

And these sames guys play big 10 teams, see Chicago State, Savannah etc.
is the risk really that great. Ok maybe you lose to a mid, but play well in conference and all is prolly ok.

too bad OU, Toledo, Kent don't see more of Xavier, UC, OSU, UD  At least the state schools?

If you ever get a chance, grab Aaron Fuss and pick his brain about scheduling. He is tireless and has a great background in trtying to get us games. YOu would be surprised how hard it is to get games if you are a decent mid.

I would play the toughest teams possible that will give you a home-and-home.   I'd love to see us schedule a preseason tournament (other than the one that we've been in which is essentially a round-robin scheduling mechanism more than a tournament) with the chance to play some of the big boys on a neutral court.   Would love to see more MVC teams on the schedule.

I would like to see a MAC-MVC challenge the way the ACC-BIG10 do it.

Why would the MVC want to do that though? The Sunbelt or the Horizon League would be more likely.

I don't doubt trying to schedule is rough......but if I'm a coach who runs a top 25 (or 10) what does some decent comp in the OOC hurt?
Some of these guys play no one who have even sniffed March Madness

You'll mostly still beat the MVC, MAC or Horizon teams, but it might not be the 40 point snoozer.

I know a BIG10 conference schedule is rough, but we're talking 2 or 3 games.

I also think geography of match ups is still important and puts butts in the seats.
Which some football conference changes seems to ignore.....

I think more  pre season tourneys with the same mix of teams and same site every year could build interest and help in this area?

But maybe that is what March is for?

Oh, I didn't say the MVC would want to do it, but I like to see it.

I think you are right about it more likely with those conferences. That whole format seems to add some additional interest vs. random OOC games.

I don't doubt that for a second.

But if you want to reach for the stars with the OOC schedule, I'd put in a call to Michigan State. Seems like Tom Izzo will play anybody, anywhere.

I know double edge sword but Miami used to have a very good OOC schedule with Dayton, XU and UC.  Since they have fallen off the cliff, I am not sure if they still play those guys.  But, if they got them when they were good, I would like to see us really try.  Maybe add in Cleveland St?

IIRC there was a recent article in the DDN where Cooper said he is re evaluating the schedule and does not see the value in playing Dayton and either X or Cincy

I can see why miami feels that way.  'Cause they way they have been playing lately, it's an automatic loss.  I live in Cincy so I know the history of the "mythical" Miami Valley Champinship between the four of them.  That hasn't been big for a long time but they have still been playing them.  My question would be: do we really try that hard to schedule ANY of the three?  One for One, two for one, or neutral?

Short of that, we just need to go to Holiday Tourneys and play some more big boys.

Clearly we can just pick up the phone and, snap, up the quality of our scheduled opposition.

Or, just show up and expect them to play us.

It's so easy.  I just can't understand why our OOC sched doesn't start this way:  USC (CA) at home, Purdue at home, NCState at home, the jr institution in columbus at home, Syracuse at the 'dome (we just show up at their pre-season tourney, whether they have one or not), Notre Dame at home, Florida at home, Kansas at home.  Just pick up the phone and make it happen.

Or the OVC...very comparable to the MAC basketball wise IMO.

For those that have insight, what is the process to get involved in one of these?  How tough is it to do so?

We can schedule above our head, but it has to be on the road. Even if a coach were willing to to that, like Coppin State would do most years, they would likely be afraid of not scheduling enough wins to suit their AD or pad their resume.

What happened to the "Rock and Roll Shootout" at Gund? I thought that had some interesting intra-state matchups at first. Maybe the fans didn't show up? Good in-state teams to choose from, as well as some interesting teams from nearby states...

Fans didn't show.

gimme a break, I don't think anyone is saying its easy.

What we are saying is 1 or 2 road games within say a 4 hour drive. And maybe 1 name at home.

we do have over 10k seats.

and it does all start by picking up that phone!

Going into this season, I thought this was the one to load up the bus and go on a magical mystery tour around the country playing the big boys at their places just to see if Ohio could go get an at-large. Everyone was back and veteran-heavy. In hindsight, it's a good thing Ohio didn't do that.

I think our schedule was good enough to get an at-large as it was. I think 13-2 or maybe even just 12-3 instead of our 9-6 OOC record probably would have been enough.

Does anyone know roughly how soon the 2013-2014 hoops schedule will be set?  I guess I am spoiled by college football and being able to easily find a team's schedule for the next two seasons.

If I recall correctly, it was released in late August last year.
