This team needs to be coached on rebounding.  This is a fundamental skill and has more to do with positioning than size.  It is frustrating to watch opponents get repeated offensive rebounds and put-backs when you know that they are preventable.

It's a good thing you posted this.  He probably wouldn't have noticed any such problem.

Baltic and Kellogg had a couple nice interior rebounds, but yeah, it's bad. Consistency is the key and we really don't have any consistency.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

I'm not sure the number of rebounds per game means much.  It's a variable of how many shots each team takes and what their respective shooting percentage is.  I would say that rebound margin is a better indicator of rebounding prowess.

Alan is correct.

We're actually not the worst rebounding team in the conference! Kent State is a DR% of 61.4%, worse than our 62.1%.

He seems to have accepted the situation and is concentrating on the team's strengths.  From yesterday's Post:

Still, Ohio is second in the conference with 9.5 steals per game.

Christian admitted that the Bobcats have to keep that mark constant in order to keep their opponents on their heels and away from second-chance opportunities, as their rebound margin is the second-worst in the MAC.

“We’re not the greatest rebounding team of the world — we all know it — so we have to try and find ways to get extra possessions and get easy baskets,” he said.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

This is why your energetic, speeded up defense is key:  leads to steals and spread-floor situations in which our rebounding disadvantge is minimized (because leads to fewer traditional-rebounding-position situations).

Hoop is not rocket science.

Onion headline:

Ohio hoops coach claims rebounding unimportant, cites Globetrotters winning percentage as proof

And coachspeak be damned, it really does help to be really big and really strong on the glass.

You're going to have to wait until next year for big and tough.

That's why Christian gets high marks from me. He's winning with a John Groce line-up when it's nothing like the roster he had at Kent State or the roster he'll construct shortly.. He hasn't tried to jam this round piece into the square hole that is his system. Rightfully so, given what Ohio had coming back.

You could probably come down at 3:00 on Monday and work with them. I'm sure JC would love your expertise.

Hey we are winning so rebounding is not as important.  I say that while I yelled for rebounding and blockouts during the game.

Just keep the defense strong and make the transitional game strong.  Victories will continue.

I'm really not excited about going from Groce's style to Christian's.

Yeah, I can see why you're concerned.  He has the best record of any coach EVER in the MAC. As Herm Edwards said, "You play to win the game".  Without DJ would you expect anything to be similar?

To be fair I think he meant he does not particularly enjoy watching that style of basketball. Definitely did not hint at his style being unsuccessful.

Yeah, it's mostly a preference thing. But I also have the feeling Groce's system is closer to where the sport is headed and gives us a better chance to make an impact nationally. We had excellent forwards before and went nowhere because the guard play wasn't up to snuff. I fear that will happen again.

I think the rebounding problems could be tied to Coach Christian's unfortunate tendency to keep his head down too much.

Christian coached two MAC POTYs at Kent...Al Fisher and DeAndre Haynes, both point guards. DJ could be his third. I'm not sure we're going to see guard play diminish greatly.

I would think someone who started in the Big 12 for two seasons should be just fine.  He works hard against DJ every day and Omni Smith is doing a great job in helping him put in extra time.

I was wondering when someone would step out there and give him the spot.
