I don't care how many years ago it was...the memories of that game will never get old.

Highlight of my freshman year, and probably in my top three favorite wins as an Ohio fan, basketball and football. I have a DVD of that game somewhere.

I remember that very well.  It was my first year to the MAC tourney.  Been going ever since.  Hotel already reserved, tickets bought, time off from work already scheduled.  I can't wait for this year so that we can hopefully cut down the nets.

That night WAS the undisputed top sports night of my life.  I only say 'was' because a certain Friday night in Nashville last year was pretty damn amazing too.

My favorite memory of that evening was when the Buffalo students were chanting "This is our house".  After the game, my buddy and I went back to the hotel quick to change and turned plain white t-shirts into Fears and Williams 'jerseys'.  We were then at the Boneyard and a group of Beef students walked in.  I started mocking them.  I asked the group if they remembered chanting "This is our house."  They looked so depressed, but I had consumed plenty of liquid courage at that point, so I continued the verbal abuse.  Two of them walked up to me, and the one guy stuck his hand out and said, "Hell of a game man.  Those two freshman you have are great.  I wish you guys the best in the tourney."  I felt like a huge ass, so I used my per diem money and bought them beers.  Chatted for a while.  Good guys.

From that day forward I tried to keep my mocking insults to myself . . .

. . . until we beat Akron last year.  It all came back that night.

My boys were 2 & 4 yrs. old and we left several hours early for that game.  We had been car shopping the week before to get a new van.  South of New Philly the serpentine belt broke and we were stranded.  I talked a state trooper into taking me to the auto parts store to get the parts I needed to fix it.  I had never replaced a belt on a vehicle and had no idea what I was doing.  Somehow, I ended up fixing it, but we did not get to the Q until almost halftime.  We were down by 19 when we got there, my wife was pissed I decided to go even though we were going to miss most of the game, and my kids were not happy about driving past Chuck-E-Cheese in North Canton as had been promised earlier in the trip.

I ordered a new van from my cell phone 5 minutes after we were back on the road, the kids got their make up trip to Chuck-E-Cheese and I was able to witness one of my favorite all-time Bobcat moments.  I have a great picture of my oldest son celebrating in the lobby after the game.  I'll never forget What is....Buffalo Sucks.

It's a long shot, but does anyone have video of the infamous "What is...Buffalo Sucks" moment? Would love to see that somewhere online.

Same for me.  My freshman roommate was from Shaker Hts., so we rode the O Zone bus up for the semifinals, stayed at his house for the evening, and rode back after the win Saturday.

Dan Lowe worked with us and guaranteed us room on the trips (since they went down and back both days and we did not), because we all know how accommodating he was to any Bobcat fan.

ts...D-Lowe did the same for me too! It was my frosh year as well. I went up one night, stayed with my buddy from the Cleveland area, then rode back the next night on the O-Zone bus after the championship.

He was amazing and kind-hearted.

What is...Buffalo Sucks. I don't know if I've ever laughed harder. What an amazing time that was.

Great story.  My highlights include that game, but the peak game is the OT Akron MAC Title game in 2010.  Maybe the best game I've been at.  Last year's UNC game is the pinnacle for me though, despite losing.  I received more texts and calls from all over the place as a result of getting to that game than anytime in the past by far.

You mean for college sports right, because I'm flashing back to the 2007 ALDS when the Yankees and a swarm of midges invaded Jacobs Field...

Haha.  Yeah.  It's very possible that I may relapse more than I remember.  I miss those days.  You know, when Hafner was good and Grady could walk without pulling something.

That entire spring in hindsight is — and probably will always be — my favorite experience rooting for any team at any level. I was the right age, in the right mindset and that team was just so young and too ignorant to know it wasn't good enough to win those games. It was such a bizarrely configured roster — a portion Minnesotan, a portion freshmen and a mishmash of spare parts that somehow worked. And the possiblities seemed endless with two stars in the making being just freshmen. That added so much juice to that celebration — the thought that we could be dancing for four years straight.

I rode that bus and Dan sat beside me on the ride back after winning the MAC title. (Personally having the social graces of a sixth grader at a first co-ed dance, I think Dan sensed that I could use someone sitting next to me. Or maybe it was the only empty seat. I dunno.) I just remember him having so many people to call on a flip phone and only so much battery to use before it went out. I don't want to exaggerate the number of calls he fielded, but I want to say he took 35,000 calls on the ride back from Cleveland to Athens. It was amazing how many people knew his attachment to the program and how many people were happy for him on that night. I thought that said a lot about how much Dan meant to a so many people. It was the only time I ever met the man and I thought for a snapshot, it was pretty telling.

I was 9 years old when this game happened and I remember it like it was yesterday. You may say that only being 9 years old how could I truly understand this moment as it took place. But I did and it's a night that will never be forgotten. I remember watching the game at home on fox sports ohio while my dad was in Cleveland with friends as he did/does (and now I) every year. When Leon tipped that ball home and after buffalo heaved their prayer (that wouldn't have counted anyway) I ran around the house screaming, cheering, and even crying. Like all of you are saying it is right up there with my top sports moments for any team. But it was also the first time that I experienced how amazing being a die hard sports fan can be. So for that alone, this game will always have a special place in my heart. A picture of Leon tipping it in hangs above my bed and every single night I relive that ball teetering on the rim for which felt like an hour, Jeremy sitting, staring from his seat in the paint, and the rest of the players, coaches, and fans locked on that ball 10 feet high. Although I remember this game in great detail, I do not know what "what is.... Buffalo sucks" is so I would love to hear the background behind that if anyone wouldn't mind explaining. Go cats!

During a timeout in the 2nd half when OU was making their comeback charge, a promo was done that involved answering a few trivia questions to win a prize (I think a Marathon Oil gift card).  A member of the OZone was chosen to take part in the contest just like all of our promos down on the floor.  When the announcer asked the first question, he turned the microphone to the student and he calmly answered, "What is...Buffalo sucks".  The promo guy let it roll to the 2nd question and the student answered it, "What is....Buffalo sucks.  By the third question, the entire Ohio section was going nuts and he gave the same answer.  It was a perfect storm inside The Q during the 2nd half of that game.

(Also, your father should be ashamed he left you home.  One of the reasons my boys go to every game (home and away)  with us is that I don't want them to miss out on one of these moments.  Penn State is an example of a story my 9 year old will always get to say he witnessed in person.)

The Beefs are waxing nostalgic on their board about how they would have gone on a George Masonesque run that year if Leon's tip hadn't gone in.  Good times.

That is great. Thanks for explaining, and I'll let my dad know your reasoning (which I completely agree with).

It was actually halftime of the second semifinal the night before when it happened.  We had already beaten Miami and advanced. Buffalo was in a tight one with WMU at the time.  They hadn't even punched their ticket to the finals.  that sent the bulls fans into a frenzy and they were willed into the finals for the inevitable clash.

For one of you that has that game on DVD:

Please make a highlight video and put it on YouTube, or at the very least, give me the last 10 seconds of that game to rewatch, over and over.

Bonus points:  turn the 1-2 seconds of the tip in to an animated GIF.

Damn the data loss. There was a great column in the Plain Dealer during the tournament that included the "What is..." story and at one time it was posted in the Green and White forum. But no more.

Does anyone happen to have that article saved? I looked in the PD archives, but while I found a bunch of articles from the tournament run, none of them sounded like the one I was looking for. I think it was an editorial rather than an actual article, and since the PD only shows you the first couple lines and then charges a fee to look at each article in its entirety, I didn't want to click on a bunch of links.
