Not sure how we win by almost 30 and lose votes in the AP. Down to 6 votes this week. Picked up one coach in the Coaches poll however.

Honestly, it is just a crap shoot from #18 and on. There is no way to differentiate any of those teams just yet. We really won't begin to get any looks until we go to Memphis. Now if we win all of our games before heading into Memphis like we should, that will be the teams first opportunity to break into the top 25.

Elton Alexander still has us at #25.

Our other points come from Mark Berman at the Roanoke Times who has us at #21.

We lost one voter who had us at #22 in the preseason.

Who cares?  Polls this early mean nothing.  This is exactly why in football and basketball they shouldn't have an official poll until at least week 5.  Nobody has any clue what is going on yet.

Because it's fun for some people to talk about.

And because, as we saw in football this year, it doesn't take much for the recognition to vanish.

I see more value in preseason/early season basketball polls than football. The polls in basketball are meaningless the entire season. They exist soley to stoke conversation and spotlight some programs.

Football polls matter (even the AP shapes the coaches poll, which counts in the BCS). So letting the concrete start to set way too early is a bad thing in football.

In basketball? Who cares? Let's have fun and rank some teams. If we need a top-ten match-up to get us excited about a game in December, why not? If putting Indiana at No. 1 turns Kentuckiana into a de facto war zone for three months, all the better!

No they aren't. Those polls are what can not only get you an at large bid, come the end of the season but potentially improve your seeding. They bring national recognition  and that recognition can do WONDERS for mid majors on and OFF(recruiting) the court.

Polls are not part of the data used by the selection committee.

Tell that to the 2004 Utah State team.

RPI, the record over the last month, conference affiliation and the health of the team are what they're looking at.

I bet our attendance benefits if we are Top 25.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I don't think anyone thinks being ranked is a bad thing. But votes in the football coaches poll are actual currency towards Ohio going to a BCS game. In basketball, votes are S&H Green Stamps or Kool-Aid points.

If you are in the polls, you are being talked about and you are getting attention. That attention is in the minds of the the committee members. It's been obvious over the years that the committee is not as "objective" as they want people to believe, especially when it comes to seeding.

so much mental masturbation at this point. Ozcat makes a great point on timing and earliness. SO much wasted ink, time and valuable oxygen fueling the effort put into this. This time last year all the IU folk were going bonkers over beating UK. Teams do not even have their kids on page one. Especially those that are devoid of upperclassmen in the line up.

I can't even look at them seriously. The only thing that is valid right now is the early numbers on Tempo at kenpom ....and that may be a crapshoot based on who the opposition is.... I would bet BSU and Miami are pretty decent right now based on the drubbing of Grambling and the score.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Winter comes and asks how you spent your summer.....

Realistically, what do you think it will take for us to get ranked? It's apparent to me that we should rack up a number of wins in a row. Frankly, anything less than a 6-0 start would be very disappointing.

What's the magic number? Will 6-0 be enough against a weak schedule? 7-0? 10-0??

Personally, I think it will take 8-0 with a W over Memphis.

If we get to 6-0 (which is a decent possibility), we should be right on the cusp. But, Memphis is probably our only hope of jumping in for now.
