Agree with Pete. Best ever TV package? I can't say I'm too enthused. Not living in Ohio, I don't get STO. If I did, maybe I would be happy with this. I was hoping for at least some guaranteed ESPNU games. Guess Offutt can add this to his list of motivational snubs.

Okay, when was the last time a MAC school was in the Sweet Sixteen?  I am thinking Kent in late 90's?  Anyways, STO should have plenty more of Ohio games and I am surprised ESPN or ESPNU would pick up some games.  This is sick, and I don't mean the good way.

Wow, what a pathetic package.

So lemme get this straight, The MAC conference, after having a team make the sweet 16, couldn't get more TV time on the ESPN networks, other than the potential blowout matchups they got??? You're telling me they could not get at least ONE game for Ohio, arguably the best team in the MAC on the ESPN networks???

I thought ESPN had a deal where they would cover each of the previous year's tourney teams at least once?

That is as pathetic a TV schedule as I have ever seen from the MAC.

We could get a couple of the pickup matchups...

Saturday, Jan. 19 – 21-Day Wildcard Selection, 3 pm ET/ESPNU
Saturday, Feb. 2 – 21-Day Wildcard Selection, 5pm ET/ESPNU
Saturday, Feb. 9 – 21-Day Wildcard Selection, 1pm ET/ESPNU
Saturday, Feb. 16 – 21-Day Wildcard Selection, 11am ET/ESPNU

vs Toledo
@ Akron
vs BG
vs Kent

I've seen crazier things happen.

If the MAC is unable to get AT LEAST one of our games vs Akron on the ESPN networks, this is a huge fail.

Is the university responsible for getting non-conference games on the air? I would love to watch some of those on TV instead of the feed from ohiobobcats.com

Even though the matchup @ Akron is a sure thing to get picked up (I would think), I agree.  I don't mind the MAC until it comes to jokes like this.

I think the headline means to imply the basketball is the largest, not the tv package.  They are using larger basketballs this year in the MAC.

Not surprising. Eastern Michigan has long been the flag bearer for the conference so it makes sense they get the majority of air time.

granted, the difference between Ohio's 4 games and EMU's 7 is the 3 OOC games they play on ESPNU against lightweights teams like Syracuse, Purdue and Kentucky. Viewers will certainly be impressed with the MAC after watching those games.

what would you rather see- Ohio playing ______ (pick anyone) in front of 12K at the Convo, or EMU getting destroyed at home by Purdue in front of 700? The entire schedule should be filmed in Athens. Maybe a couple in Toledo.

When you play in a lackluster basketball conference, expect to have a lackluster TV schedule unless you're scheduling big name teams to come to your home court.

What's our biggest name opponent coming to the Convo? Richmond? St. Bonaventure? Marshall? They're all decent names, but there are better teams playing at those time slots that ESPN decided to skip over us

NIU @ Valparaiso gets TV because Valpo won the regular season title in the Horizon League
Temple @ Kent State gets TV because Temple won the A-10 regular season title.  Plus that game is at noon on a TUESDAY! do you think anyone would go to a game at the convo on a tuesday afternoon, while school is in session?

All the ESPNU games were selected based on the name of the opponent, and EMU just decided to schedule 3 really good teams this year.

The only game I can possibly see getting picked up on TV at a later date as far as OOC games go, is our game against Richmond.  So far there are no games scheduled on TV as of today when I looked up schedules on espn.com.

Point of the matter is, until the MAC gets better, or we schedule REALLY BIG time teams to come to the convo, don't be surprised when get looked over.

Did you say when the MAC gets better?  Well, I don't know about you but I've taken several friends with me to the MAC tourney these past several years and we go to every game and they were skeptical about it but after the championship game, they told me how much they enjoyed it.  They were surprised how much the MAC is underestimated.  Even Dick Vitale has said the MAC deserves more attention.

Plus, I wish Ohio would get in the 24 hours of basketball on ESPN.  Yes, I would skip a class to go to a 2pm game.  Shoot, I would go to a 4am game.  Yes, we should try and get bigger names in but that won't happen until we have more than just one great season.  I do see this happening with the hiring of Christian and reaching the Sweet Sixteen last year showing these high school players with talent that OU can be the Cinderella team.  I am excited for the team and the conference.  I think it's only time til the MAC gets more and more notice.

Don't get me wrong, there are some great teams in the MAC.  The problem is, almost all of them are in the East, and the West as of right now is abysmal.  Only Toledo, who had a record of 19-17, was the only team in the west that was over .500.  That's not a good conference by any stretch of the means.

I mean for goodness sake, only 5 teams in the MAC period were over .500 after the regular season was over.  Does that shout excellence?

Maybe Ohio should just join the A-10 in basketball and stay in the MAC for football. Lord knows the MAC won't make us join for all sports. They let Temple do it, why not let us do it too???

What a great package. We should stay in the MAC forever. I hope our bowl tie ins never change too.

I do live in Ohio and I don't get STO. It only reaches about 4/5s of the state.

This is why I'm in favor of scrapping the divisions in basketball. Let the East teams feast on the West and stop cannibalizing the East teams.

Wouldn't that hurt the RPI more?

Yes.

But I've given up on making the committee impressed with MAC basketball as a whole. At some point, the conference just needs to see if it can get two teams nearing 30 wins. That's the only way I can see the MAC getting back that second spot in the field. Because waiting on Ball State to get back to where it should be and for Toledo to finally not trip over itself while it sits in a large market with Detroit recruits just up I-75 hasn't worked over the last 20 years in bringing depth and balance to the conference. I understand that this is an  anomaly and that eventually the West will find its footing. But it's been a long while and meanwhile the MAC can't get a second team in the dance within the current framework.

I don't know if getting rid of the divisions is the answer, but they have to try something, anything to try to get a second team if only for the financial benefits.

How about some of the better "Mid Major" conferences put together a Holiday, or Pre-League", or December "Mid Major Extravaganza" type tourney. Top 4 teams from 4 Mid Major Conferences (i.e. MAC, Horizon, Missouri Valley, etc. - the tourney committee selects teams based on the just prior years success). Play a 16 team week long tourney type championship. Games start 2nd weekend December, finish the next weekend. Gear it to the midwest/east so travel not ridiculous distances for fans - builds excitement at time of year when many can travel (After Thanksgiving, before Christmas). Helps all RPI's for teams involved. Good home draws for all involved. Secure TV package for strong secondary/localised marketers, ESPNU, ESPN2, FOX etc.

Way it is now all these teams settle for away and no home returns deals for the bigs - and win 1 out of 20 - all the Mid Majors just feeding the bigs. This package still allows for the 1 or 2 bigs games Nov/Dec the bigs want anyway to make sure their RPI's aren't crapped out before the major conference season's start.

This is a way some of the Mid Major's could take control of their own destinies a bit more?

I know - "What about Bracket Busters?" Well, 90% of them already "busted" before that even happens any more - and we all know what those TV packages are like - the bigs have 1st dibs for the preferred time slots by that time of the season anyway.......
