...when the media predicts good things for the football team, everyone gets excited, but when the media predicts good things for the basketball team, people freak out?

Watch what happens when Elton and Super Friends pick us in a couple months.

We've been disappointed before in hoops...  You can only get so excited about a D-1 football team running the Wing-T, if we blow it this year maybe football will be the same.  Then again, I still get excited about the Browns.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I think that's because a basketball team is smaller, so if anything happens (injury, suspension, homesickness), it has a far greater chance of having a significant impact with the team dynamic and chemistry. I think that a football team is able to withstand those setbacks because the roster is so much larger.

Interesting observation, one I hadn't noticed until you pointed it out.  However, I think the reason has to do with the setups of the sports themselves.  In college football, you need high expectations before the season, as there are only a small number of games to prove yourself, and unlike basketball, the winner isn't solely decided on the field.  It's decided by the sportswriters who build the expectations.

Elton's in the tank for Akron. I'd bet money that he picks them to win the MAC East this season.

Perhaps, but we'll win the poll. Handily, most likely.

Because this is a basketball school.  And maybe a 1-2 guys who doing/acting dumb can wreck a basketball team, but usually not a football team?

I for one am worried about all the hype for football.  The separation betweent teams in the MAC is small.  And, Penn State is on a mission to blow us out.  If it happens, I wonder how the whole program (team, students, community fans, etc.) will react.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

One needless worry down the drain!
