......can we end the ridiculous "stand for defense" crap at the beginning of each half?

New era. We can end the poorly manufactured tradition now. Nobody likes it. Everybody (with the exception of people in the 4-8 year age group) thinks is an amateur, bush league thing.

Just let fans be fans.

Stand until we score might make more sense.  I've always thought that standing for defense allows the opposition to sit our fans down.

I'm in favor of getting rid of it.  It's just awkward.  Also, the 4-8 age range actually do NOT like it because they can't see anything when everyone is standing.

This gimmick actually makes me hope the other team will hurry up and score the first hoop so we can sit down.  My 8 year old son can't see when everyone is standing up and my father has difficulty getting up and down on his bad leg.  Never cared for it.

Amen!  I thought it actually motivated the other team to score.  On more than one occasion a player from the other team left his hand hanging after a made first basket as a kind of "in your face."  Dumb idea that I hope dies.

Just out of curiosity, who's idea was that anyway?   Please give proof of your answer.

I'd like to blame it on Lou but I can't find any proof.

I'm in favor of switching to "Dance for Defense"...just to see the reaction of the opposing bench if 10,000 people started dancing without the aide of music.

PA announcer having to "egg on" the home crowd is just plain corny. It gets REAL corny after one of the sluggish starts by the visiting team - 2, 3, crap sometimes 5 or 6 minutes in, and it gets REALLY corny AND tedious.......

Isn't this what "cheerleaders" are supposed to do (or at least the Ozone) - get the crowd loud and hostile when the opposition has the ball? "Loud" beats "standing" 100% of the time..........................

How about sit until first Bobcat three ball. That way everyone is hoping DJ knocks down that first 35 footer and the place goes nuts until next time down floor his hits another from 37 feet  and then the other team comes out of the zone defense then we get to see Ivo, Reg and Smitty rock the rim a few times to warm up the crowd.

Here's an idea for all you old hippies.  Next season we organize a sit-in that just happens to coincide with the start of every half of basketball in the Convo.

Nobody stand!

Solidarity!  They'll have to recognize our point of view.

Power to the People!

I'm pretty lukewarm on this, but I do find it interesting that we did this throughout the post season WITHOUT any coercion from the announcer. At every single MAC Tournament game, the whole Ohio section stood until the first opposing team basket. Same for Michigan. Then I think almost everybody stood the whole game for USF and UNC.

Like it or not, I think this manufactured tradition has slowly become a real tradition. I'd doubt that it's going away anytime soon.

As for who started it, my money would be on Jim Schaus. I remember watching a Wichita State game on TV and they do the same exact thing. The timing tends to match up with his arrival (then again, it also matches up with John Groce's arrival). Doubt we'll ever know...

I always stand when I want to - not because somebody else told, asks, begs me to................

sounds like we need something less committal like "everyone lean slightly to the left for rebounding", or "everyone wipe the crumbs off your shirt for dribbling". might work.

As Love said it is ridiculous and it's crap and in no way shape or form is it a tradition.  There are quite a few folks in the platinum, gold and silver sections that don't get up and very few in the upper bowl do.  Instead of thinking up gimmicks perhaps Jim should spend more time figuring out a way to save money by tightening up all of the duplicate mailings and phone calls.

You guys scoff at this "tradition" but can you imagine how exciting it would become if we started shutting teams out because the fans were standing?  Forget about the Cameron Crazies, the OU Insane would be all over ESPN.

....."standing" achieves nothing (just ask the geezer who sits behind me at all the games and constantly asks us to sit down when we do stand, jump, or dance.....).

"Noise" does.................

Nah, they use undergrads to make those calls. With VOIP + undergrad labor, they're practically free.

So maybe people could start making some.

The labor may be free but the printing isn't cheap.  The "administration" of the OBC is the single biggest expense of that organization (well over $100,000), followed by bonuses and summer school.  They could save a ton by better monitoring the repetitive and duplicative mailings.  I have a stack about six inches high from this year alone.

Printing is done on campus and the postage is rock bottom. There is probably great difficulty in getting  a "clean" mailing list. Admittedly there is duplication. It may come down to "does the duplication issue mean that we shouldn't do mailings?" The few people that constantly harp on this issue don't have credibility on this board.
