SMU AD Steve Orsini has released a statement offering the school's version of events:

“Upon his hiring, Coach Brown conducted an evaluation of the current men’s basketball roster and then held timely individual meetings with members of the team. During each meeting, there was honest, straight-forward discussion about the future of the program. No player was told his scholarship would not be renewed. Per NCAA men’s basketball rules, each student-athlete has the opportunity to remain at SMU as a student and retain his scholarship. If a student-athlete wishes to continue his playing career elsewhere, Coach Brown and his staff will help him find another institution. These are decisions that will be made by the individual student-athletes, though, and not the Athletic Department. We wish these young men the best in their future endeavors.

I just want to know who's pulling the strings at SMU that hooks them up with Larry Brown anyway?  This is a place that could use some stability.

From day1 you better start worrying about Brown's "future endeavors".

I think SMU realizes Larry Brown will not be around forever. That's why they named former Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich as their coach-in-waiting.

One time we discussed a surprising lack of board memes. I think Jeff and Future Endeavors has become one.

Every new coach does this and has done this for many years. When it gets out in the press, it makes it seem like the coach is the second coming of Joseph Stalin. Danny Nee ran off every guy he could when he got the job in 1980. It's nothing new. They should at least let the kids play immediately at their new school.
