John Cooper - Miami's new coach

I went to the introductory press conference for Miami's new head coach John Cooper yesterday.

I have to say that I was impressed with the guy. He carried himself very well and was convincing.

He did, however, say the phrase "trust me" just as much as Tebow said "exciting" in his presser, but less times than Allen Iverson said "practice."

I would hate to compare him with JC because they are both entering different situations.

However, he was quite impressive. If he does well there, I can see him moving on. Luckily for Bobcat fans, Miami has a ways to go.

Main point, was that he wanted to play fast ... which is going be a drastic change from the Charlie Coles era.

I think they have the personnel to play fast next year. Rollins, Edwards, Felder, Brian Sullivan, and Harris are very different players than the Pollitz twins, Hausfeld, St. Clair, etc.

Curious, what playing fast means. You hear it all the time, but don't truly see it often. Teams that typically run all the time struggle. I am not counting teams like UK that are good no matter what they do.

I think a good comparison would be Dayton under Brian Gregory. The ran has much as possible and played very sloppy basketball. The Flyers had the talent to do well, but underachieved by not playing balanced.

In the past, Miami gets a few upsets or almost upsets better teams in the early portion of the season by slowing down the game. If they run, they would probably get blown out in those games.

That being, the new coach is a good talker - so I assume that will translate in recruiting and in motivating his players.

But, I am not sure if you want to constantly run up and down the court if your team is not as athletically gifted as their opponent.

If he starts speaking in the 3rd person, we will be in business.

Miami made the right choice by starting fresh with someone who has no former ties/experience in Oxford. Any word on where Henderson is landing?

I notice his background re: geographical footprint is not comparable to most coaches in the MAC. I wonder if that is part of the strategy at Miami? Maybe to recruit more in the South and not continue to bump heads in the Midwestern metro areas with the other MAC schools?

Cooper said he wanted to "own the backyard," so I'm guessing not.

But Cooper's not the first coach to say they want to play faster. The DNA of the MAC isn't conducive to it. We'll see, I guess, but far more fail to speed the game up than succeed.

I feel for Henderson with this announcement. The guy was a good soldier and put in his time and now he could very well be out.

However, if he can convince Butler County residents to jump on the bandwagon - the attendance will go up dramatically.

My guess is that he blew away AD Brad Bates in the interview.
