I graduated from OHIO in 2006 and I have been reading Bobcatattack since I was in school but have never posted before, but with some recent events I've witnessed I thought I would share it with people on this board because I feel people here might be interested.

My job transferred me out to Tucson, AZ about two years ago. When I first moved here I would always have to clarify the difference between OHIO and Ohio state.  After the Georgetown win some people new the difference.  I would here people say Ohio, the green school right?

Now that we made it to the sweet 16 it is a whole new story.  I have been in line at grocery stores hearing people talk about how OHIO ruined their brackets.  I hear people at work talking about how impressive OHIO looked playing UNC.

Yesterday, I overheard some of the younger guys that work for me saying to one another "State looks good I think they are going to beat Kansas."  I replied did you just say State for Ohio St?  His response was yeah boss, we can't confuse that school with your OHIO so we decided just to call them State and take the OHIO out because that's the Bobcats.

I have heard people argue on this board about name branding and how important using OHIO is.  Well, here in AZ since March I have not heard one person say OU, Ohio U, Ohio University everyone is saying OHIO and it is because of our sweet 16 run!   I also think we should take the OHIO out of Ohio St. when referring to the Buckeyes.

I think the Michigan win did a lot for helping with that. The whole Brady Hoke story was a big storyline all week before tipoff and then when we won people probably thought "Oh look Ohio beat Michigan, but they're wearing green? Gotta be some other school then."

And then I honestly opened my mouth to say "Go Bobcats" to someone wearing a hat similar to this one in the Columbus Arena district.  The sun was in my eyes and didn't adjust to the colors, just saw the big OHIO letters.   I don't get how they can continue to make these and the OH-IO shirt in the Ohio State Bobcats thread.

The one I saw actually looked more like this:

The exact same black hat with the block "O" was being worn last week by the 45 year old dude that rode his BMX bike (while smoking a cigarette) to the place where I get my car washed.  He was late and had to immediately get to work.  When he took my money, I smiled and said, "Thanks, man.  Go Bobcats!" and pointed to his hat.

Funny...AZ knows us as Ohio and half the alumni in Ohio still say Ohio U or OU so as not to confuse us with the State.  Kinda funny.  Does amnyone think this branding is 100% effective?  No, but I guess I will take the 80-20 rule!

I have noticed a sizable uptick in the media using "Ohio" since the tournament. USA Today especially. Mostly everything I have read has it right.   Yes OU is used by alums everywhere.  That will change in time as well.

Whenever you see a picture of Jesse Owens take a red magic marker and write in STATE underneath OHIO

Been waiting for an appropriate time to tell this story.  I was in Nashville for the Michigan game then had to go to the South Haven, Mi area on Saturday for my wife's family get-together.  As I was walking around in a Mejers, proudly wearing my Bobcat green shirt and hat a golden aged couple looked at me and said, "That was a good game last night."  So, of course my chest began to puff out a little bit, but then they continued, "but why were you wearing green?  Was it for St. Patricks Day?"  I started explaining, but when their eyes glazed over, I just quit and walked away.

I saw a guy wearing the black hat recently. Kind of blew me away. Surely this is a violation of the terms of the agreement between OU and OSU.

Wait....you graduated in 2006 and have a job? According to the media, anyone who graduated after 2005 can't find a job and is sleeping on a couch in their parents basement. What gives?

haha, unfortunately my job is no where near the field I went to school for.  So I still fit the mold of post 2005 grads.

Do I gotta say this again?

1) OHIO is the national, brand name.  Media must use it.  You should begin to transition to it and lose O.U. and the like--I have.

2)  For a little while longer it's okay to use the following terms--but only among fellow students and alumni:  O.U., Ohio U, etc.

'a little while longer' ends on June 6.

Which can only raise the question:  Have you bought your season football and hoop tickets and how many VBall games will you be going to this year?

I don't know about the unemployment rate for recent grads.  But overall for college grads it's supposedly only about 4.5%.  Your degree is likely to pay off.

If only to support me and OCF and OldKatz in retirement.

I know I'm late to the party for this thread but I just wanted to say that the Ohio gear in Columbus has increased teremendously since the tournament run. Honestly, I saw a lot of people wearing Ohio gear before, because those of us who went to school there actually show tons of pride in our alma mater, but the tournament run just propelled it to higher proportions.

I find it amusing and sad that my roommate, who went to Bowling Green State University, does not own a single article of clothing with BGSU on it, and if I didn't ask him where he went to school, I would never know that's where he went. My sister went to BGSU, and my cousins Ball State, and friends at other MAC schools, and none of them compare to OUr passion.

And it's not just the sports' team I'm thrilled about; I am also proud to be part of the fraternity that was Athens, Ohio. I am already pumped for the next season and have got my next excuse ready for visiting Athens (I need a new hat).
I am ready for the future of this team and this Ohio program. Only great things lie ahead!

We can still call the college OU. Ohio is an athletics mandate.

If you had gone to BGSUcks, would you advertise it?

We could call them at 614-292-OHIO and ask them questions about Ohio University.

This is an area where Ohio fans can really make a difference in "Protecting the Brand" by getting a pic (if possible) and emailing that information to the legal office at Ohio University. John Burns was the person who led the effort in this area when it came up last time. Not sure if he is still in that same position. You will also need to find our where the item was purchased.
