Bring himself to call us Ohio.  He will call us Ohio U., Ohio University or O.U., but he just can't bear to call us Ohio even though Reghi does it all game long.  I find it at the same time, insulting, amusing and for his part embarassing.

Although, Reghi almost always adds "Bobcats" after "Ohio."  He also has trouble just saying The Word.

Reghi said The Word at least twice last night without the suffix, so I give him a pass.  Also, he obviously studies the MAC and usually knows what he's talking about, unlike Mix.   I agree with KD Bobcat that his inability to say OHIO erks me to no end.  I wonder if he has some close relative who went to the The back in the day and remembers the days of Jessie Owens' now infamous jersey.  I'd say he should be sent to do Michigan-Ohio State games on the UMich network, where his misuse of the English language would fit right in with their coaching staff, such as it is.

It probably has more to do with playing at Toledo back in the days when we were Ohio U.

Our jersey's even back then said simply "Ohio."   We did various "OHIO" cheers when he played.  Our announcers referred to us as Ohio, though others did not.  He knows quite well that we are Ohio, but he just can't bring himself to say it hardly ever.  He's got an attitude, and it gives me an attitude just to listen to him.

Agree completely, and so does former president Vernon R. Alden.  That cheer needs to be given the deep six.  It only reinforces the idiots in Ann Arbor.  That recent context makes it particularly bad right at this particular moment in time.

A bit of history on that one:  During the 2008 OU/OSU game, the 110 wanted to find a way to mock the OSU fans in their own stadium, and that chant was born during OSU's "O-H-I-O" chant that they pass around the stadium to the four different sections.  A couple of us in the 110 decided to add our own "U!" to the chant after the last "O!", and it caught on until the whole OU section was doing it the rest of the game, and then again in 2010 when we went.  So, I suppose apologies are in order to those of you who hate the U.

But hey, it was born out of ignorance anyway?  Bonus points for that?!

How about adding "BOBCATS" instead of "U"? That's what my son and I do whenever the situation arises in a Central Ohio restuarant, store, etc . . . In fact, I've trained my fifth-graders to do the same at school functions with "bonus points" as a reward. This doesn't go over too well with the sheep in the building, but what the heck.

I appreciate the STO coverage with Reghi and Mix, but I agree it's obvious that Mix doesn't like Ohio much.  For example, during the Kent game, if there was a borderline official's call that went against Kent, he would loudly defend Kent's perspective.  By contrast, if there was a borderline call that went against Ohio, he just kind of mumbled something quietly.

It is kind of ironic because the "O-H-I-O-U" during Zombie nation kind of irks me too that we need the U...But if we just did "O-H-I-O" it would be awkward because that is Ohio State's deal.  Don't get me wrong, it shouldn't be theirs and we would have every right to do it ourselves...but it still seems weird.  It is kind of like when I was in the Ozone there was 1 idiot that screamed "O-H!" and got a spattering of "I-O!" in response as if we should just do that chant too.  We should bea ble to do that chant because it is our name, but years of OSU doing it makes me hate it and hate the idea of us doing it.

I'm not sure any of that made sense.

Screw Ohio State.

In speeches to groups around Ohio, Gordon Gee says the following:  " I tell proposective students that if they want a good education, come to Ohio State.  If they want to party, go to Ohio University."

Your history is incorrect. A member of this board added the U to A&M's O-H-I-O chant. We were seated in 2 sections clockwise from the 110 about 7-10 rows off the field. One of our group was a former OHIO cheerleader. In short, my friend did it, then our group of 4 did it and the people sitting around us did it, then the then the cheerleaders picked it up and it spread to the band and the upper-deck OHIO contingent, as well as the smattering of people around the stadium.

While I agree in general that we shouldn't refer to our selves as Ohio U, it served 2 important purposes on that day: (1) it royally pissed off the A&Mers, (2) it seriously cut into their use of that chant for much of that game (until they came back to take the lead in the 4th quarter). I don't apologize for my role in propagating it, and I doubt that the inventor of the U apologizes either.

There was one play on Wednesday night where Mix's logic drove me nuts. Kent had to rush up a 3 from the corner with the shot clock winding down. The ball grazed the rim, then fell directly below to an Ohio player. The officials blew the whistle for a shot clock violation, only to decide afterwards it was an inadvertent whistle. Mix lost his mind, somehow trying to concoct this idea that the whistle cost Kent State an offensive rebound despite the fact they had absolutely nobody in position to get the ball. His whole rant was asinine.

Related, Mix has had several instances this year where he's gone off the deep end on officials and more often than not, the call was proved correct by replay. Only even after seeing the replay- he STILL doesn't let it go. It's silly.

That kills me as well. He will never, ever, ever admit he's wrong.  There were several plays the other night that the replay showed he was wrong.  To his credit, Reghi will admit when he's wrong.

Speaking of replays, does anybody know why Kent got their second technical the other night?  I have to assume somebody said something but I didn't see anyting on the replay.

I'm guessing Stevie Taylor was the cause of it. Not sure what was said, though.

Before going in for halftime, Stevie walked over toward Kent's bench and was saying something then, too. He got some dirty looks. He also didn't play in the second half. Coach said Stevie didn't play just because of a "feel" he had with other players, but I have to wonder if his bit of trash talking had something to do with it.

By the end of the game the other fans were chanting state, which only got a loud cheer out of the Ohio fans present. (well, at least those sitting around me)

That's another thing irked me about their broadcast.  Reghi & Mix were sitting on the end of the scorer's table, right next to the Ohio bench and they can't find the time during a commercial break to ask someone what happened.  Plain lazy.

OK, can we agree in the future to only use the OHIO-U cheer when we are playing O$U in their house and in a direct response to the end of their chant and, thereby, forcing them to add the "State" that should be there anyway?  In that context it's clear that we are mocking them.  In our own house playing anyone else it comes off as though we are accepting a status relegated to us by outside forces and confuses brand identity.  BTW, I was at the football game in question and I remember how it all started.  In my section no one got it, but I don't dispute that it might have been effective in other parts of the stadium.

Edit: A modification of that cheer -- along the lines suggested by bobcatsquared -- might be a good compromise, if there's strong feeling about continuing the cheer -- O-H-I-O BOBCATS.   That works for me and I don't think it would send the wrong message to anyone, even in Columbus.

As bad as Mix is, does anyone remember Bill Needle? He was (is?) a KSU announcer who also did MAC football and basketball for a regional sports network in the 1990s. Needle made Mix sound like Hubie Brown, the all-time best basketball color commentator.

Yes, I remember Bill Needle.  I always wondered if he was the brother Joel Needle, who was at Ohio with me in the late '60s.  I heard several years after we graduated that he had died tragically in an automobile crash -- out in Arizona, if I'm remember correctly.
