What if we had a coach who won the MAC championship and took us deep into the NCAA tournament?

Next season.

Then he or she decides to capitalize and move on to a 'bigger' job because, you know, he's a hot commodity and wants to take advantage of his immediate leverage.

What are you going to post in your spur of the moment, overly emotional 90 page threads then?

Depends entirely on what the coach says, or doesn't say, about his love for Athens and Ohio University and the strength of commitment between he and his players.  Each situation is unique unto itself.  I didn't shed many tears when Nee left; it was clear he was looking for the next job the day he set foot in Athens.  That wasn't the case with Groce.

Just like this year, I'd be a little hurt, but not surprised, and I'd be ready to move on quickly. First world problems, bro.

I'd say it's quite possible. The guy Ohio will hire is being set up like Stan Heath was set up.

I'd say it all depends on how we react -- do we once again act like a bunch of dumb sheep, and express our love for the guy who's dumping us for that so-called "dream job"? Or better yet do we rationalize his reasons for him, and say he'd be a fool NOT to dump us, like some forlorn masochist hiding in his dungeon?

Or maybe this time we realize that it's all just business, that it works both ways, and at least not throw roses at the guy as he walks out on us.

So whenever I or anyone else leave Athens for better opportunities, we never meant any positive things we said about the area. If you truly love something, you never, ever leave it, right?

Out of respect for OTHERS I've changed my above quote and will cease all future references -- now you do me the favor and stop falsely claiming I made a direct comparison with abuse, but rather -- and listen carefully -- the rationalizing of it

That is now twice YOU'VE done it. Stop it yourself.

I loved kindergarten. I didn't refuse to go to first grade. I did write a tearful letter to all the Letter People, though.

It's amazing that some people on this board are able to stand up straight given the size of the Athens-Ohio-is-wonderful chip on their shoulder.

Groce thinking Athens was wonderful and loving what it had to offer, and Groce having a life plan that would eventually take him out of Athens don't have to be mutually exclusive things.

Anyone else find it Ironic that a band that owes a huge part of their early existence to CHampaign and U of I shows up here? I know I saw them both in Dekalb and Champaign at the Red Lion.

Yeah - and was Carrot Top's dad the guitar player in the band?

We better have a HUGE buyout clause with our next coach to prevent him from jumping after next year.

I'd rather we get the best possible man to coach next year's team. The inclusion of a "HUGE" buyout clause will probably be a disincentive for some of the best and brightest to come to Athens. In my opinion we should do everything we can to get the very best and the very brightest. Should we include a buyout? Sure. Should it be at a level that makes people think twice to coach here? Absolutely not.

I've said it before in other threads, but this program is in much better shape when our coaches leave to take jobs like Illinois instead of ones like Bryant.

It is a problem that I will be happy to face if we should be so fortunate.

Given the ending of every predecessor since Nee, we should take a moment to realize that this current scenario is far more enjoyable.

If we're okay with it, then it means we're okay with being a stepping stone.

I'm not saying that's bad.  Just wondering how people here feel about that.

I suppose an alternative path is the GotFrank way--get a solid, older guy who'll settle in for his last runs.
