Ohio players are dumbfounded as to why they have not been informed by their current/former Coach Groce of his plans and are voicing their extreme displeasure via twitter...very sad for me to see these tweets by the young men. Very Sad..they do deserve better.

Social media and leaks get everything out well before folks can manage the traditional niceties.  It is not a deal until its a deal.  Coach does not want to tell his players if the deal falls through.  But my guess is that if it is a deal, he is now gathering his men together for an emotional meeting.  One can tell that he loved those guys and will have long term ties to them.

@ohiostunter STFU here we go again" I can hear your little whiny cry-baby voice..Oh don't talk about the negative stuff going on with the program. Yes that is something negative when your former players who just helped propel you along with your great coaching skills to the Sweet 16 and America's cindarella team is posting NEGATIVE TWEETS about your departure or the way it is being conducted. Especially guys  namely DJ Cooper who turned down offers to leave Ohio..or Walter Offutt who also posted his displeasure at the way Groce is leaving..who transfered into the program.  Get that brown substance off your nose son.

Hey, if they put cinnamon on the whipped cream, it's going to get on your nose. Who are you to judge?

He's not trying to blow sunshine up your ass.  Outside of taking the players to a location and letting them set in on the negotiations, how else is it supposed to be handled?  The negotiations have been drawn out, so the players aren't going to hear much.  As soon as something happens you know he'll do what he has to do.

Welcome to today's media.

Not a big fan of the blitzman, but he's right in posting this.  The truth should get out.  It's painful, but necessary to know and certainly gives a less than flattering picture of the man we've all come to love as our basketball coach.  It's not the unforgivable sin, but it's certainly a black mark on his record, if the reports that he's accept the Illinois job are indeed correct.  I suppose given the incredibly good journalism we've been getting from the Land of Lincoln, it's possible that this really isn't yet a done deal.  If so, my criticism is off base.

As well-spoken and level headed as Blitz is, I hope he is on the search committee for our new coach.  This guy obviously knows what is going on behind the scenes, therefore he should be invited into the inner circle of trust on campus.

let's be real here. there's no big outcry from the team on twitter, there's only one comment so far, Offutt said he's hearing reports but the team knows nothing about it, and then Stevie retweeted it. That's it. That's the total of the team "voicing their extreme displeasure.".

What's JG supposed to do? Go get DJ's and Walter's advice? I can just see how that conversation would go down.

JG: Hey DJ, guess what? Illinois offered me a job today! What do you think?
DJC: Well coach I wouldn't be happy about it, but I don't have any experience with that because I've never been in your shoes. But seriously, if you left, I'd be pissed. I was loyal to you and even said it on camera (In Coop We Trust video).
JG: Well I mean, it's a tooooon of money. I just don't think I can turn that down.
DJC: Whatever man, just do what you gotta do and get me a coach in here that helps us win.

C'mon man, this was all JG's decision and no one else's.

I'll just use a TOS line to finish it off: That's a day in the life of the MAC.

If the article saying JG wanted $1.375 for 8 years versus Illinois offering $1.2 for 5-6 years is accurate then it's clear as can be that JG planned to move on from Ohio. That suggests he had no intention of staying given we couldn't come close to matching those kind of numbers. And JG should have had enough respect for the guys who busted their butts for 37 games this year to at least have a team meeting to shed some light on things. To not do that IMHO is almost disrespectful to the 'team' that helped get him this new job. I can understand guys being a bit unhappy.

Actually ST tweeted 45 minutes ago - I posted it then:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sounds like players still have not been told.

From a couple of minutes ago:

It looks like the time has come to spend more time and energy supporting the current Ohio players and less time and energy discussing the former coach.

I'd like to think JG handles the departure the right way but if he doesn't, I'm not sure it is worth crying over spilled milk. 2012-13 is still a HUGE year for this team / program. Gotta turn the page.

My high school basketball coach had an old saying.....There are two things that don't last: Dogs that chase cars and teams that don't make free-throws.

Are people suggesting Groce should have told players he was going to leave before the deal was finalized? Do you realize how catastrophic that could've been?

No, but I would expect he would tell Illinois that his players would have to hear the news first...no leaks. And guess what, here comes the leak. Again, just another puzzling thing about the lure of this job.

QFT. If you won't take a job because you want to be the one to break the news, you're gonna be unemployed.

Reports are he's meeting with the team in the morning.

Really? The ink probably wasn't even dry on the contract when someone leaked it to CBS Sports and then the other outlets picked it up. I deal with this kind of stuff every day. There's no control over it, especially in a digital world. JG was in a no-win situation here in terms of notifying people. And was anyone really "shocked" by this now? Really? It's Day 5 of Groce-watch (cue bigtilly's graphic...)

Why couldn't he just reach out to them and say "hey guys, i don't really know for sure whats coming next, but whatever I decide, you guys will be the first to know." Would that be so hard?

It seems like they haven't heard a peep from the man.

It's all about the almighty $$$$$$$$. Can't blame Groce financially but as far as talking care of the guys who busted their butts all season to get you the promotion...because he is ONE POINT VS AKRON AWAY FROM BEING THE 3RD BEST COACH IN THE MAC...I had to put it out there..but seriously great season I wish him luck but our players more.

If it is a done deal (which I am not totally sure it is), then he should tell them. Not before, not seeking player's advice. But when the deal gets done he should be calling them or trying to make an attempt to contact them if he can't get a team meeting together due to time restraints.

Or ... "guys I've been offered a tremendous job which means a lot more $$. Nothing is finalized yet but I respect you guys enough that I wanted you to not be caught off guard if a deal gets done and it hits the news wires before we get to have a formal meeting".

Hope he does well in Champaign.
