Most coaches make that and more than a million, VCU pays 1.4 million. Is that doable in Athens?

I honestly think we need to kick it up to at least 1 mill per, for him to have the ability to turn down bigger bucks elsewhere. I can tell he wants to stay at least one more year, but it will be extremely hard to pass up the big bucks.

Even tho we can't offer him the huge bucks, if we can show he that we are totally dedicated to him by going to a salary point above where we haven't really ever gone, this may sway him. I think the VCU guy saw that dedication/effort in VCU and that's what swayed him into staying.

I love coach Groce but count me out of the camp of "just pay him a gagillion dollars."  We don't have a gagillion dollars.  We're a mid major in a small town, and even if we were able to find a way to pay him 7 figures, there are still many things we will never be able to offer that a place like illinois does.  Hope that coach stays, prepare for when he doesn't and continue to make smart hires to reload and build on the success of the predecessor.

At this point, the only thing Ill can offer above us is money. Their program is a mess, the prez just resigned, their AD is under fire and to top it off, he doesn't seem like he would be a popular choice over there.

There's a reason why 5 other candidates have turned down the offer.

Offer Coach Groce what we can.  A raise of some amount that is worthwhile without bankrupting future efforts, a growing and faithful fan base, the best arena and student section in the MAC, and the undying love of Bobcat Nation if he should turn down the devil at the door...

Any chance the subject matter in the below article influences his decision? Does anyone know if Matta plans to gut it out for 5+ years or is he likely hanging it up soon?

After what Matta has done, and because recruiting Ohio is not the dirty business that Chicago recruiting happens to be, the OSU job is a much better job than Illinois IMO. Plus, Groce has strong Ohio ties.

Obviously, this move would be more disliked by Ohio than a move to Illinois.

I heard Shaka Smart say something that I hope JG thinks about in this situation - Don't run from happiness.

Assuming he is happy and he gets a decent bump in pay, don't run. I guess we will really find out what OHIO means to him soon.

Anyone have any inside info on what we can realistically hope to offer coach?  What about the assistants?

I doubt we can get up to $800k.  Can we get to $650k for the next year?

Wish it could be me...Is it allowable for a person to donate just for a coach's salary?

A fact: There always will be someplace that can dangle the lure of money, but if that's what's steering your boat, then be prepared for the consequences.
There are false notions about "worth" that have warped our society and led a whole lot of people to plod through life with a bulging bank balance and a bankrupt psyche.
Speaking from a career of experience, I can tell you that following rainbows in a quest for a pot of gold does not bring happiness. It is beholding the rainbow itself and basking in its glow that is the treasure.
In the context of this discussion board, the rainbow is OHIO. You and I are born and raised on Green and White. Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone came along who was born a Bobcat (or who married into OUr family and became fully assimilated) and whose heart's desire -- their dream job -- was to be the best Ohio coach or AD there ever was ... a person who was not only as good as it gets in all the ways that make a coach or AD great (such as, I believe, Jim Schaus and John Groce) ... but a person for whom Green and White was the proverbial "end of the rainbow"?
To paraphrase an earlier thought in this string: "Happiness" is not spelled "Happine$$"

The only thing that is a fact is that nothing is a fact.
If this statement is true, it is also false.

What's sad is that many people don't believe this and can't be convinced otherwise.

They sacrifice quality time witheir friends and family for the mighty dollar.  They question even people like me with stuff like "you retired at age 52?"....."you could still be working at age 64 and makin 6 figures"....."are you happy being poor?"

My wealth is being able to do what I want to do when I want to do it and for as long as I like.

I tend to agree with Rucks post. Its unfair to portray Coach Groce as being selfish if he.leaves Ohio to accept a job in a BCS conference. Folks, come on, thats the name of the game. Coaches enter this profession to advance as high as they can get. If he leaves, I will wish him well. This is what its like being a midmajor. To try to portray Ohio as an ultimate destination is unrealistic.

They'll be no hard feelings from me either. He's a great coach and a competitor: for a lot of these guys its not about the money per se, its about being the best, and one way that thats measured is in salary terms.

No, I'll be a bit sad but I'll wish him well, and hope that the Illini fans deserve him...and I'll hope that in 2-4 years he leaves Illinois for a good high-major job

I think it is kind of dependent on how the NCAA win share stuff shakes out.  There seems to be some confusion as to whether or not the school who makes the NCAA tournament gets 50% of the money or if it is simply an even split amongst the conferences 12 schools.

If Ohio gets 50%, they stand to see 2.85 million over the next 6 years. If they rolled all of that ($475,000 / year) in to an extension offer for Groce, they could get his base package close to 800K. Or they could give him a 700K offer and inject an additional 75K in to the assistant pool.

If they only get 1/12th, I don't see where the money is going to come from. An even split would only send around $80K a year Ohio's way (for six years).

In terms of donating money, I believe you can donate for a coach's salary. I don't think you can just write Groce a check but you could donate it to the Bobcat Club (earmarked Men's Bball Team) with the understanding it will be used for the coach's new salary offer.

My high school basketball coach had an old saying.....There are two things that don't last: Dogs that chase cars and teams that don't make free-throws.

Catman, we don't know the exact formula, but we do know it is based on performance, scheduling at home, etc. While we don't knot the exact percentage, we do know it is better than 1/12.

Just think what another run next year could do for the program.  If (i hope he does) Groce sticks around for this group of rising seniors to graduate and we make another run into the Sweet 16, that would give us another large payout over the following 6 year period.  Add that to this years, and we could be looking at the funds needed to give Groce a large raise (probably still not large enough to match a Big 6 school) or provide for incentive raises for our next head coach.

Found this interesting.  Arkley just tweeted that Schaus stated that the money earned from the NCAA Tournament is split EVENLY to the 12 schools.  He goes on to note that the MAC is rewarding the TV deal money (ESPN/STO) to teams that meat certain criteria.

This is a total load of garbage.  The teams that are elevating their performance in the Tourney are the ones who should receive at least a majority of the windfall.

I've never been an 'Ohio to the (bigger conference name here) kinda guy, but news like this is starting to persuade me . . .

Here's a story about the money split from the Plain Dealer last summer:  http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2011/07...

The needle will not move for Ohio Athletics while it is still in the MAC. Its Media Relations Director made fun of us for drawing 13K on Trent Day.
