An open note to the O-Zone:

Everyone knows you help make our atmosphere the envy of the MAC. Most of what you do is great. Keep 95 percent of it.

But adding "A$$hole!" to the "You suck" routine is too much. Too over the top. Detracts from what you're accomplishing. To be perfectly honest, it makes you look like a bunch of a$$holes, which you're probably not.

Why is a word that you cannot post here on this board okay to scream en masse in mixed company?

This isn't about personal squeamishness about profanity. I've heard it all and probably said it too at one time or another.

This is about dropping $50 to see a game and support the program and having to explain to kids why something that every adult tries to teach them doesn't apply at Ohio University. You can literally watch people cringe - it's not just me.

The "your morals don't apply to me" argument won't fly. Try walking over to a school playground during recess and shouting profanities. You're pretty much doing the same thing at the Convo.

I have a 3 and 5 year old, and I agree with much of your thoughts.  Selfishly, I wish it wasn't there.  However, I also remember back to when I was a college student and there was just no way I could really grasp or care about it.  I wouldn't expect anything more from the current students.  So I don't get upset about it.

Enjoying peeing at the wind? I tried to get them to stop it when I was in the O Zone. I was just as successful as this thread will be.

You don't have to stop the guys saying a-hole, just stop the one guy who does the extra "you suck" after the "you you you" stuff. It's a cadence, and if you stop the beginning, I'd think the rest wouldn't happen.

I was in Broney's the evening of the EMU game after it was over and there were like thirty of them in there.  They were all lit and everytime someone broke something they didn't this chant.

The bar staff was annoyed to say the least.

I would like to think this were so.  But I've talked to a couple of the folks in the Ozone about it and got the same results JSF has.  I think that if you took out the cadence from the ones who normally did it, somebody else would pick it up.  Or they'd yell a-hole with out it.

the a$$hole chant is about as used up and tired as is the bull$h!t chant after a blown or bad call by the refs.....I hate hearing it when I am watching a game either in person or even when you can hear it through a broadcast on TV (which you could last night especially the BS chants)...I mean c'mon....get some new material.

When you are in high school and its still "neat" to cuss and tick off the principle in the other side of the stands, fine....but when you are grown men and women, you should be able to resort to something more original than tribal chants of simple profanity....

and oh yeah for the record, I am not against the colorful use of profanity in the individual heckling of opposing players.  In fact a well used cursed word in an attack on the enemy team is an artform...but when it's coming from a lone "master" heckler who is close to the court, it doesnt travel throughout the entire gym, invading others personal freedoms......

The 'bullpoop' chant is much more effective, and fun for the entire family too.

Agree on the a-hole chant.  Needs to stop.

I loved it when a number of people in the Ozone started singing, "If You're Happy and You Know It..."  Then it quickly faded out.  That would have been AWESOME had everyone picked up on it.  And a great taunt for the AK Rowdies!

When I put out the meeting idea, this is exactly what I wanted to address.  Had last night not been the last home game of the year, I was headed over to confront the three clowns who have perpetuated this cheer.  If they graduate this year, thank goodness and hopefully no one hires them.  But, if they're back, I'm grabbing McKinney, PF, if I can figure out who he is, 695 and we're heading over there to put an end to this boorish behavior once and for all.

I'm no prude as McKinney can tell you and really got a kick out of the "Rachel" cheers a couple of games ago.  That said, we/OU can do better.  Glad you guys are on board with this.

That was actually what the point of the chant was going to be.  We were supposed to go through the "song" once with the OU fans, then on the second round point at 'Kron's students.  (Normally, it would be designated for the opposing teams bench, but whenever a rival student section is in the house, they automatically get the brunt of the jokes.)

It died out because of a mixture of students outside the center not doing it and some students wanting the chant to be "winning and you know it."

I love swearing more than anybody (yes, anybody), and I have to say the a-hole chant is annoying, embarrassing, stupid and lacks creativity. I think it might not be a such a bad thing if the ozone got a warning from the refs, which might spur their creative juices a little.

The front rows of the O Zone are full of a bunch of nerds who lack leadership abitlity and creativity.  They cannot control themselves and act like they are playing a video game in the darkness of their parent's basement and shouting obscenities through their Xbox 360 headset to some other nerd halfway across the world.  If I could have pinpointed they guy screaming "F*** YOU!!!" over my shoulder last night, it might have gotten physical.  One of my favorites was the guy cursing at Reggie Keely two games ago for, in his words, "F'ing sucking every time he gets on the floor".  The a$$hole chant is childish, too.

I have made no secrets that I have four seats in the Black Section directly in front of the center of the O Zone.  I have tried to be nice and engage the students behind us by greeting them, bringing stat sheets from the Rohr Room for them and being polite going in and out of the section.   So far this year, I have had every giveaway that was on our seats stolen before we got to our seats, even though they were all given one already.  I have had to listen to languauge that no person with any sense of societal limits would say out loud individually.  I, along with my family, have attended every game this year but one.  My only regret is not going after some of the idiots leaning in between my 8 & 10 year olds and screaming "F you!"  nearly every game to some player or official on the court.

The O Zone would be a lot easier to tolerate if they actually organized their efforts.  At any one time, there are three different chants going on because there is no clear leader.  I have no respect for the O Zone right now.  I wish I did.  I was one of the originals in the 6th Man Club in the early 90's and never behaved like the guys in the front rows now.  I'm with Swank on this.  There is a vocal minority in the O Zone that needs reigned in.  They are an embarrassment to the university.

Dont tell me you bought seats in front of the loudest and most hated student section in the MAC and expected it to be sunday at church. Every student section is the same and if you dont like cuss words then don't sit by a student section. Im sorry but its common sense.

That's more than a bit extreme.

Though I do think it's going to be a challenge to herd these cats - I agree that the "A Hole" just plain sounds juvenile - I'm more embarrased by it than offended - just sounds stupid - sounds like something you would hear in say........Akron?
