Drives me nuts, when will they learn? Does anyone call Indiana  Indiana U?  Of course not. Other pet peeves of mine

is why does Kansas go by KU? They're Univ. Of Kansas, or Univ. of Oklahoma stealing OU, I guess someone was asleep at the switch when they registered that as their mark.

Maybe when the boys beat UNC then they might get it right.

I'm with you.  I probably let it bother me too much but I get irked every time I read something that refers to us as something other than "Ohio".  It's one thing if they mention "Ohio University" and "Ohio State University" in an article using the same phraseology.  But often most schools are given simply "Indiana" or "Michigan" in an article only to call us "Ohio University".  In a world where everyone seems obsessed with brevity and short hand it's like they go out of their way to call us the longest name possible.   It's not like you hear "University of Iowa" (simply chose another state with 4 letters to prove my point).

I had to stop reading most of the articles they guys here at Bobcatattack have assembled for us to read because so many of the journalists butcher our name and it distracts me so much.   Then again there are so many sheep out there they probably just follow suit.

As someone who works in marketing and branding professionally it really gets under my skin.  Especially when our media guide is very clear about what our preferences are in terms of full and abbreviated references.  I will give ESPN credit....they have never used "Ohio U." that I have seen on their score tracker etc.  I also found it interesting that CBS had us listed at "Ohio U." early on Friday leading up to our game and then switched to "Ohio".  One of their producers must have came across our site here haha.

Anyways.....like I mentioned before I probably get bent out of shape over it for nothing but it is frustrating to me.

I guess I will go on record here and say that this really does not bug me at all.  This has been discussed on this board ad naseum (I think thats the right saying!!!) as if it is going to be the cause of some strange identity crisis that will cause a failure in getting the Ohio brand name across to the national media or as if it represents some kind of lack of respect to the university...and I dont think that's the case.

Heck, if you ask 20 students on Court Street what university they go to, you will get every answer from Ohio, to Ohio U, to OU, to maybe even..I dunno (this one maybe more if you ask after 11pm)

And yes...for the record, I did about a month ago change my screen name from OUPTgrad, to just PTgrad because of a well written opinion article by Dr. Alden that was linked here....

So while I technically agree with the underlying argument here, I just think its great that we are still being talked about in Mid March, no matter what the initials are....as long as the end name is always the same.....GO BOBCATS!!!!!

Just stop for a moment and think about what we're complaining about:

Dickie V and the national press are talking about Ohio hoops heading into the Sweet 16...

It bugs me more that Bilas and company broke down the Midwest bracket last night and mentioned only UNC and Kansas and what they had to do to make it to the FF.   I would have loved if they had called us the wrong name instead of not mentioning us at all.

Ohio U is startng to grow on me.  What I am seeing now that isn;t grwoing on me is "Ohio Bobcats" like it's one word, i.e "Friday's opponents are North Carolina vs. Ohio Bobcats".  Apparently, that is the lazy way to make the point that we aren't A&M.  Who else is known by their combined school and nickname names?

The more time I spend living in a state far from Ohio the more I think this whole naming issue has less to do with OSU and more just on there being so many colleges these days (Especially in Ohio) and people from all over the country in the workplace that really have no idea about schools in other states.

When people ask where I went to school I typically reply "Ohio" as most of us here would, but there is always a hitch in the conversation as it is clear they think I meant the state of Ohio, as in, "ok well which school" so I have to follow up with "Ohio University".

So really I am getting pretty comfortable with saying Ohio University. That having been said OSU's effort to make all things "Ohio" refer to them is worth resisting in any way possible.  They need to embrace 'state' just the same way someone would say they went to "Ohio Northern" or "Michigan State" and honestly I have no clue why they don't.  To have a part of your name that makes you unique and to not use it is really confusing.  It's like a square calling itself a rectangle for the exclusive purpose of getting recognized more often.

I hate Ohio U.  WE ARE OHIO.  I'd much prefer to be called OU, as we are in fact the original OU, over Ohio U.  Of course, that would result in more confusion since Oklahoma is commonly known as OU nationally.  We are Ohio.  We own the name.  We are the first university in Ohio and we should be damn proud to be "The" Ohio University.

No way should we accept being anything other than Ohio in a national level.  It's what distinguishes us as the first and finest.  It's OHIO all the way.  We shouldn't have to quantify who we are by adding a U on the end.  We should be pushing hard and doing whatever we can to make ourselves known as OHIO.  I'm pretty sure just about everyone here wants that to be the case, but it can't happen unless OUr alumni and fan base fully own it and makes it a priority.  The more we are referred to as Ohio U by the national media, the harder it becomes to claim the name Ohio, which of course is exactly what A&M wants.

After all, schools like Fiami (OH) need to tack extra things onto their school name.  The biggest difference?  We are OHIO.  No one else can legitimately make that claim.  Who the hell wants to be like Fiami?

There is only one OHIO.  We don't need the U.  We shouldn't be satisfied that tacking on a U may or may not help to differentiate us from A&M.  We should be doing everything we possibly can to make it known who we are and why we are OHIO.

Good points, OU didn't know.  Let me just add that a certain head coach at a certain state university in the Wolverine State knows who OHIO is now.  The a week before he was clueless.  I really liked seeing the video of our fans chanting "We are OHIO" right in his ear.

The old timers like Vitale are cooked.  Its solely because of Ohio State.  They'll never change.

What gets me is the younger announcers with no apparent ties to the midwest at all who have been told to call us Ohio but still instinctively call us Ohio U.  That is just bizarre.

Anyway, I hope we beat U North Carolina Friday.  I think we can take U Kansas and/or North Carolina State U.

So people call us Ohio U or OU. Our own University and its affiliates call us by those same names.

As of July 2010, Ohio U has composted over 263 tons of food waste and serviceware.

To me the FACT that our school is in the news, being discussed and gaining a lot of exposure and positive press is a lot more important than worrying about whether there is a "U" on the end of our name or if it's shortened to "OU".

Actually, in a sense you just proved my point.  The academic brand and the athletic brand are a bit different.  Of all those schools listed above, the "U" is never added in a sports reference except for Ohio.  It's either UC, Cinci, or Cincinnati.  Miami is Miami.  Georgia is Georgia or UGA.  Houston is Houston or UH.  Purdue is always Purdue.  Syracuse is Syracuse or 'Cuse.  I have no idea about Case Western.

The U in an academic sense in most cases is needed to differentiate between colleges and universities that share the same name, such as Columbia College and Columbia University, two very different schools.  I guess if we want to base it off Georgia, maybe we should be OH U...lol

The whole thing to me is if we have the right to name OHIO and we were the first institution in the state, we should be fighting for that right to use it and do whatever we can to establish the brand when the opportunity is there.  That time should be when your university is put on display for a worldwide audience.

The home page for OUr university isn't ohiou.edu, though it will get you directed to the right spot.  It's OHIO.edu  It doesn't say Ohio U on OUr homepage, it says Ohio or Ohio University.  You'll never see Ohio U on one of our uniforms, so why should we accept being called that?

I don't care if we're being talked about nationally or not, we are Ohio and that's what we should be represented as.  Would you be satisfied if the team was just happy to be in the MAC tournament, or if they were just happy to have gotten into the NCAA tournament?  If they can claw and fight and proudly represent the green and white, isn't fighting for our right to be called Ohio the least we can do as fans and alumni?

Arkansas
Michigan
Indiana
Illinios

Out of that list only us and New Mexico are not in BCS conferences. Maybe the U is the price we pay for having mostly unrecognizable athletic teams.

Add:

Delaware (although sometimes referred to as UDel colloquially)
Vermont
New Hampshire
Maine
Montana
North Dakota
South Dakota

All non-BCS schools and all of them get the respect of being called by their real names.

Also, on the UMass and UConn subject I mentioned awhile back that University of Pennsylvania is sometimes referred to around here as UPenn. Graduates of that esteemed university sometimes get peeved when people confuse them with Penn State as well. In both the Ohio and Pennsylvania circumstances the better university is the one that has trouble with people confusing them with the lesser institution.

How many of these schools are "state name" University versus University of "state name"?

Does anyone else believe that has something to do with the U being added at the end?

Since I live in Nebraska, I will comment that there is no Nebraska State, but there are several other university campuses that do play sports, though not at Division 1. When making distinctions they are referred to as UNL UNO, UNK, but they are all part of the same university system. Since there is no "Nebraska State", they should probably not be in your list.

Peter King, one of our most illustrious grads, refers to us as Ohio U.  Frankly, that's how it was known when I went to Ohio, i can remember buying an "Ohio U" decal for my 1968 Dodge Dart.  If this is what we're worrying about, then we have nothing to worry about...
