Groce is white. Those not in the Chicago area may not be aware of this, buy Illinois is under intense pressure to hire a black head coach for the 1st time. its a huge factor. Groce is a sleeper, I can't see them turning to him unless 1/2 dozen other people decline it.

IMHO, very, very unlikely.

Is there a chance Ohio can pay him enough to stay or is this an "offer that he cannot refuse"?

With his background in the Big Ten I would think they are looking at him very closely..

Word on sports talk radio from sources inside Illinois has them willing to pay the right guy as much as 2.5 - 3.2 million PER YEAR. Unsubstantiated reports have Groce's current base salary as 250k. As a comparison, VCU's Smart is getting about 1.1 million per year with bonuses and incentives paying up to 500k more a year.

 The short list

Anthony Grant of Alabama, Lorenzo Romar of Washington and Leonard Hamilton of Florida State

The long shot is Robert Smith, the Simeon High School coach. Although, Smith sounds like an assistant coach with recruiting ties to Chicago.

To coach and be successful in Illinois, you have to get in the dirty waters of Chicago recruiting, Shaka probably thought otherwise.

Could we perhaps change the thread title so as not to give fans of Ohio a heart attack upon clicking? At least a question mark at the end?

Personally it was refreshing to read about Shaka's decision to stay and really build something special at VCU.  Sounds like he is very happy where he is and wants to put down some roots.  Quite a change from the typical situation.  I know VCU has made a very sweet situation for him which certainly helps.

A part of me wonders how many more Dean Smiths, Coach Ks, Jim Boeheims we will see anymore with the demand and pressure to win higher than ever and parity at an equal high.

bcatmich is right.  INTENSE pressure to hire African American, particularly because one was not even considered in football coach search.   The powers that be, in my opinion will have to show that offers to at least 3 African Americans were made in order to satisfy some folks connected with the university.  I guess if all 3 then turn the school down, it would be hard to complain about whoever is eventually hired.  actually, right now with the Illinois situation and Neb. not really a destination job, i feel pretty good about Groce staying 1 more year.

I agree. Makes it sound like that's the story when the story is Smart turned down Illinois. Very irresponsible.

Hugh Grant plainly stated that he will not be giving his kids money as every trust fund child he knows is f---ked up as an adult so he does not want his children failures like the others.

So, Coach Groce knows this and he'll say to himself, I can live in Athens pretty swell on a half mill and not cause my children to be like the other wealthy offspring.  And no doubt Coach Solich has probably been giving sage advice that from experience it is wonderful to be loved and to do what you love where you love it.  Coach Groce to eclipse Jim Snyder's record of games and seasons and wins before he leaves Athens.

I'm also predicting a victory on Friday evening...

I'm seeing no chance he goes to Illinois.  Strong desire for minority.  They lost their top choice.  They won't retreat to the latest flash in pan/hot coach (I mean that from their fan's perspective).  Any other openings besides S. Carolina and Miss. St.?  Would assume if one was going to fire a coach it would have happened by now...correct?  Only concern I would see is domino effect (e.g., Grant leaves Alabama...)

SO my post was edited?? People post statements all the time that draw attention to their posts. So I expect to never see another Subject heading that is not 110 percent the truth. Very bush league and petty to edit the post. Grow the H Ell up.

It was a question you idiot intended to start a discussion. Maybe if you had read the actually post instead of being s cry baby about it giving someone a "heart attack" you would see that its's similar to many post who's subject doesn't word for word match the content. Are you the message board police is this your day job?? I'm sure you will find something else to whine about on the board in the next week.

Will greener grass be waiting for Ohio's John Groce?

Quote:
According to several Mid-American Conference sources, league rumors have Groce leaning — and leaning hard — toward staying at Ohio University if his only suitor is Nebraska.

Shaka turned down 20.8M according to the Sun-Times. And look at this:

One coach who fits Thomas’ hiring profile is Ohio coach John Groce, a Thad Matta assistant at Xavier and Ohio State. He’s been successful in the Mid-American Conference, where Thomas is from, as well as the NCAA tournament, where Thomas wants to go.

The Bobcats will meet South Florida in the Sweet 16 on Friday. As a 14th seed two years ago, Ohio stunned No. 3 seed Georgetown 97-83.

Groce, 40, doesn’t run complex stuff, but he has a reputation as a strong recruiter who’s proven himself in the muddy recruiting waters of Chicago. The team’s leading scorer and playmaker, 5-11 D.J. Cooper, is from Seton Academy, in South Holland.
