Tar Heel here, trying to get a little scoop on your team. Obviously have read tons of good things about Mr. Cooper and at this point in the game take no team lightly.

What does Ohio excel at? What do you all not do so well? Any info would be much appreciated.

Here is to a well played game and much luck to you all.

Thanks! Welcome to the board and good luck tomorrow.

Ohio excels at upsets. Apparently, we do not do well with being called Ohio U.

We can play some pretty good defense, especially on the perimeter and occasionally do well double teaming down low.  When are shooters are hot 3s can ran down on you from above.  DJ is the captain, Walt is the defensive leader, Kellogg is our sharpshooter, Smith is our defensive center, Keely is our offensive center, and Baltic is our big that likes to pull big men away from the basket.  TJ Hall can do just a bit of everything off the bench and Stevie can be a pain in the ass for any PG.  This game will come down to our perimeter shooting vs your inside game.

Thanks sargent, good stuff. So just reading, you guys go about 7 deep on rotation?

UNC does not guard the 3 well most of the time, so if you all are hitting, should be interesting.

On the other side of the ball UNC normally does not shoot from the perimeter all that well. Like you said, I expect the Heels the pound the ball inside at-will. I also expect to see lots of doubles down low from Ohio to try and force UNC to make some shots. If they start hitting, should make things somewhat difficult.

Do you all like to push tempo or keep it a half court game normally?

Welcome Worthy!

We also will use Ricardo Johnson off the bench.  He's a good defender and can drive to the rim a bit.  He'll also pull up for a short jumper as well.  He got hurt later in the season and TJ Hall picked up a lot of his minutes.  TJ's been a fairly consistent 3 point shooter lately as well.

Ohio likes to push the ball, but has become a fairly efficient half-court team as the season has gone on.

EDIT: I agree with others here, Ohio's outside game vs. UNC's inside game.  I think it will be close.  I hope Ohio can get steals against the inexperienced UNC guards and thus neutralize UNC's transition points with some of their own.

Ohio's defense forces a lot of turnovers by doubling the ball on the outside and the inside, then jumping into the passing lanes when the ball is passed out of the double.

At least seven guys will get double-digit minutes, two more may get up there. During the season, we went 10 deep nightly, but a freshman power forward left the program prior to the MAC tournament. We will definitely try to get as many transition buckets as we can. We have forced a ton of turnovers all year, and if Cooper gets a steal in the halfcourt, everyone, even our bigs know to break in the other direction.

Ohio excels at defense. The Bobcats rank 34th in the nation in defensive efficiency. The biggest reasons for that are that they cause turnovers at the second-best rate in the nation and defend the 3-point shot (16th in the nation). However, the Bobcats are a bit below average at defending 2-point shots, which is a concern in this match-up.

Ohio's offenisve efficiency is pretty good (100th in the nation). The Bobcats are a somewhat average (to slightly below average) shooting team, both inside and outside the arc overall, and are slightly above average at not turning it over, but have excelled at getting offensive rebounds.

Thanks guys.

Normally UNC will push the tempo at a breakneck pace. Marshall is the king of "hit aheads" off missed and made baskets. That being said, we are so depleted from injuries, especially recently, that I have no idea what to expect. I imagine a PG averaging around 3mins a game is going to get the nod. I'm guessing we will have to slow down some due to that.

Rebounding is key for UNC, they rebound like beasts. If Ohio is as good as def. eff. stats say, rebounding is going to be a major key in this game.

That has more to do with the way we play defense. We overcommit to make passing difficult. It works well but when it doesn't it leads to easy shots.  The loss of Marshall makes out job considerably easier than it would have been. If Carolina can get the ball to their scorers where they want then we are in for a long night.   Very few teams have been able to do that however. We've had great success against teams that create offense by passing.  We are susceptible to strong guards that can create their own shots.

If you guys play focused and up to your ability, even without Marshall, we need our best game of the year by far to stand a chance. It's sad to admit as a fan, but let's be serious. You have tall, athletic NBA prospects everywhere. Henson's arms are almost as long as our point guards are tall.

As you are probably well aware of, this UNC doesn't "bring it" all the time though. All of the doubters coming out this week scares me. I feel like they could be fired up more than normal for a team they probably think they can beat rather easily. I actually felt better about an upset with Marshall, simply because I could see them being too confident.

We haven't been blown out all season, but we also haven't faced a team like the Tar Heels. I think our team will keep it close though. We certainly won't back down.

I honestly don't know what's going to go down without Kendall playing. I think you guys have a better chance than you think, after all, you are here for a reason..

So defensively, you guys play an overplaying man2man all the time? Do you ever go zone? I was expecting to see some zone this game.

As far as your conference goes, who is your rival? How did you all do against them this season?

I hope I'm not coming off at 'that UNC guy', I'm genuinely interested in your program. Most of the news down here has been 24/7 wristwatch about Marshall..

We prefer man to man, but will occasionally adjust to zone, depending on the way the game is playing out. I would expect to see more zone from us than normal tomorrow.

As for rivalries, we have a few. The traditional rival is Miami (OH). It's not a hated rivalry, I think a lot of us respect Miami's academic profile, the kind of players they have, and we love their head coach (Charlie Coles, the most endearing coach in the country) and we are sad that he has retired. They look at us as dope-smoking hippies and we look at them as collar-popping preppies. Like I said, we don't hate them, but we really enjoy beating them. We swept them this season, and the game in Athens was a highly-attended affair that saw us retire Gary Trent's jersey. These videos capture that game nicely:

www.youtube.com/watch
www.youtube.com/watch
www.youtube.com/watch

Akron is the hated rival. There's no love lost when Akron and Ohio play. Both teams do plenty of trash talking during the game. I don't know if our players mix it up with Akron fans at their gym, but Akron players will acknowledge Ohio fans in our arena. A lot of our fans think the University of Akron is a joke of a school. Every time we play, it seems there is something on the line. This year we beat them at home, lost at their place, and beat them in the MAC final. Each of the last four years, either Ohio or Akron won the MAC tournament.

Great stuff shaba!

Looking at the Gary Trent day video, Reggie Keely is a baller! Kid must of had 4-5 and-1's that game vs Miami OH. Impressive.

Just reading what you say about your rivals is somewhat similar to UNC. I'd say our Miami is dook. They are a weird sort, located in Durham, NC. Gothic campus surrounded by somewhat of a ghetto community outside of the actual grounds. 90% of students there are from NJ it seems. Something not similar to your rivalry with Miami is we do not like Coach K, at all. Overall though there is a measure of respect between the two programs.

Our Akron is definitely NC State. They really, really do not like us, to the point it's almost ridiculous a lot of the times. UNCs last 25 games with them come out to a 25-2 record or something around there but they are now on the rise. Here is a good and recent example of an NC State fan: http://blogs.newsobserver.com/uncnow/entertaining-reader-...

Make of that what you will, but that is the majority of the WolfPack fan base in a nutshell. To be honest, I'm shocked they aren't over here on your board already. As expected, there is zero respect between our two fan bases.

I think one of the biggest reasons some people hate Akron more is that their fans acknowledge that it is a rivalry and will participate in it. Miami's basketball program has dipped over the years from being a solid mid-major to a painfully mediocre program. Miami also has one of the top hockey programs in the country, so I think that during the winter months, Miami fans feel they must choose which team they will devote their time and money towards, and it's often hockey. Miami's hockey arena is fantastic, a mini-Cintas Center. Miami's basketball arena is a dark, dated concert hall.

My biggest fear is we turn it over and/or don't get back on D off misses fast enough and Carolina speeds it up big time and just runs right by us and blows us out.  Shouldn't happen.  But...that's my biggest fear.

We are one of those how-did-they-just-win-that-game teams.  Mainly because we play great defense and hit timely shots.  Its not beautiful basketball for most observers.

I think all the pressure is on Carolina.  But Carolina should be used to that.

One of the best things about Ohio is our fans.  We are a jolly group.  We'll cheer like hell and then have a beer with you afterwards regardless of the outcome (unless you are from Akron).

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

This team has a great cast, but Cooper runs it all as ESPN stats pointed out:

Quote:
Ohio guard D.J. Cooper has scored or assisted on 71 of Bobcats’ 127 points (55.9 pct), that's the highest pct of any player left in field

My favorite Cooper highlight of this tournament run: (although the poster listed us in the MEAC instead of MAC):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XyGmh18IAk&feature=re...

The reaction from the Akron player guarding Cooper is priceless.  Cooper's got range up to 28 feet.  Something about these games turns Cooper on...he thrives in the spotlight.  Teams have tried different things with little success.  Akron had their 7 footer Zeke Marshall guarding him several times in the MAC Championship.  Michigan was double and triple teaming him at times.  USF had one of the nation's leading defenses.  He just finds someone else to do damage (Offutt, Baltic, Kellogg, Keely, etc), takes one more step back and fires,  or cuts around you up the lane.

Here's a nice video with opening highlights when he was a Freshman against Georgetown...fearless.

The Buffalo/Ohio Semifinal game is online:

As is the "quarterfinal" game vs Toledo

I call Charlotte home (obviously) And you are right, it is 24/7 wristwatch.  My annoyance is that most Carolina fans here are taking us very lightly ("well we don't need Marshall Friday, but come Sunday..."). We force turnovers - 25% of opponents possessions.  Marshall could be key to this.  And we are here for a reason.  Tough defense, timely shooting and a team and coach that are relentless.

Worthy, good to have you here.  I lived in the town of Wake Forest just outside Raleigh from 1989-1994 so I got a good taste for the Triangle and the basketball rivalries while I was there.  One national title for the Tar Heels and two for the Dukies.

Got to attend some athletic events at UNC and NC State but not Duke.  Visited the Duke campus several times for academics and sight seeing.

I've heard Duke is thought of as a Yankee enclave in the south.

I think that Ohio plays some matchup zone out of a 2-3 look along with man to man D.

We try to offset opponents' advantages in the post by double teaming and hoping we don't get fried with three pointers.

I'd like to add that Marshall University has become a fairly hated rival in our fan base.  Many of their fans have a superiority complex vs. us, thinking that the only reason we could possibly beat them is if they don't try.  Funny thing is, we have beaten them in football and men's basketball three times in a row.

Good luck.  Looking forward to the game Friday.

The Akron guys response is hilarious in that first link you posted Bobcat110. I remember Lefty Driesell doing something similar at the end of a MD/UNC game back in the late 80s.

Cooper definitely is a baller. Terrell Stoglin at Maryland reminds me a lot of him. Heels game plan vs him all season was let him get his points, shut down everything else..I imagine something similar tomorrow will be in play.

Yes, some UNC fans are taking you all lightly, it's going to happen everytime. I just happen to not be one of them, like I stated earlier, at this stage of the game - you cannot do that. I highly doubt the team will either, been a lot of folks saying we're going home this weekend and the team is most def aware of that banter.

Nice to chat with you folks, it's almost impossible for a UNC fan to have casual, decent back and forth with other ACC fans. So this is refreshing. Once again, good luck to you all, class fanbase and team it seems.

This might sound silly, but I think when fans are civil to others, even on message boards, you kind of have the ability to "gain fans." I think most Ohio fans do a great job picking up casual followers along the way for the program. I met this one person who was a Gardner-Webb parent of a football player. Sure, that game meant next to nothing, but they told me that because of their positive experience with Ohio fans and the experience in Athens, they always keep up on their football and basketball teams now. Not sure how common that is, but growing even our casual fanbase is not a bad thing. Have you ever met a casual Akron fan?

The biggest fear I have about North Carolina is their ability to blow a team out. Few teams can get on a roll and put up a ton of points. If we were playing, say Duke, instead of UNC, I would say there is no way the game isn't close. With North Carolina, I could see us winning the game, and I can also see us losing by 30. No Marshall helps slow UNC down though.

I'm grew up a big Maryland fan and have seen nearly all their games this year (as well as all of Ohio's games). There are similarities (both are left handed, small and dynamic) between the two but Stoglin has a scorer's mentality while Cooper is a distributor first.  Stoglin hits some amazing shots but Cooper is a better all around player.  For the Bobcat fans that have not seen Stoglin, if you think Cooper takes an occasional ridiculous shot you haven't seen anything.

The UNC message board I visited had surprisingly few posters who considered this game a walk over.  The South Florida fans had a much higher percentage that thought we were going to roll over for them.  They spent more time discussing how to beat you guys than worrying about us.

I have a question, worthy. What happened in your game with UNC-Asheville? You guys have a big size advantage against us and we had a big size advantage against them. They kept it close against you guys and we ran them out of the gym (albeit, without one of their top players). What were they able to do so well in that game?

This is a great thread.  I would just add that Coop is at his best when he distributes and takes shots that come to him.  If he tries to make everything happen and has one of those 2-10 three point shooting nights we are in trouble.  I would much rather see Coop driving to the basket and dishing to Offutt or Kellogg for threes on their spots in the corners!
