God, I love the ride this team is on and the national exposure Ohio is getting.  But I wonder if all this might be a little too much.  Seems like there's a new story on every station up here every night, not just using clips from locker room speeches but footage from practice or elsewhere.  Groce is on WLW, Walt is on an Indy station, the Trib had a feature on DJ, and on and on and on.  I know that you have to make yourself available for the media, but when does it get to be a counter-productive distraction?  I'm sure Groce is doing his best to keep a handle on it.  But the closer it gets to gameday, the more the need for the team to focus on the game and not the fame.

I wouldn't worry too much about this team being distracted.

Wally Szerbiak weighed in on the MAC and Ohio's chances (and the rivalry with Miami) on the Petros & Money show on Fox Sports Radio. Took Matt 'Money' Smith awhile to remember Miami's nickname, but Petros thankfully got our school right - Ohio Bobcats.

This is the kind of attention that OSU, UNC, Kentucky, Syracuse, et al. get all year long. With success comes attention. You have to deal with it just like every other team. I'm confident that Groce will have this team on track mentally.

All 16 teams left are getting this attention. This is part of being in the sweet 16.

are you kidding? all I see are discussions about Jesus' broken wrist and how its cool that 4 schools are from one state. Where is the Cinderella love? So tired of hearing about how the tar heels are going to have a tough time against Kansas.

I agree.  Everytime I am watching ESPN, it's about that &^%*(&^%'s wrist or OSU or how nobody can stop Kentucky and at the end, oh, North Carolina plays Ohio.  I hope we put it to them and if we don't win, at least we hang with them.  But, shoot, we will win.

Agreed. All the attention must be in Ohio because the only person that I have seen discuss Ohio at all nationally is Fran Fraschilla.  Everybody else is talking about how this will give UNC a tough time winning the NC.  ESPN ran a highlight reel this morning about March Madness and not one shot of Ohio.

Bingo... really every year the sweet sixteen cinderella gets a ton of love. Front page spreads on the sports media websites and some love on sportscenter and such.

No such love for us this year.

I hunted for NCAA tourney podcasts and found little mention of the Bobcats. The UNC podcast was depressed about losing Marshall and wondering if they could still get to the Final 4. One podcast I found (It was a CBS Sports podcast with guest Dan Shanoff). He said Ohio has gotten screwed TWICE for cinderella love. First time was it had the misfortune of winning their game basically within hours of TWO 15 seeds winning along with Duke losing, so the 15 seeds got the attention. And the 2nd is the Marshall injury that has taken over the media coverage for the tourney this week.

I guess we'll just have to beat UNC this Friday to get our attention. But even then, I bet all the media attention will be on Marshall not being there and how it affected UNC.

I actually think we've managed to fly a bit under the radar throughout this.

We upset Michigan simultaneous to Duke losing to Lehigh and right after Norfolk State upset Mizzou, and as such a lot of the focus was on them the next day. And then Sunday so much of the coverage focused on Kendall Marshall's wrist that I think generally speaking we've had a bit less attention on us than a lot of 13 seeds in the Sweet 16 might otherwise have. And I think that's probably a good thing for us, although, I'm sure Roy Williams has been playing plenty of attention to us.

I think Peyton Mannings signing with the Broncos has stolen some of our media coverage too. Sportscenter is devoting alot of time to this, when they could be doing stories on each of Sweet 16 teams.

Frankly, even though I kinda love the pub, all this stuff has been enough for me. Play the game and let's see what happens. It's going to get worse starting tomorrow.
Just get me to Friday nite please.

I'm just the opposite-I love all the attention/publicity that Ohio is actually getting; I don't want it to stop!

It's just that last week Groce emphasized prepping for Mich like it was any other game.  That's tough to do this week with all the media hype.  Yeah, there isn't a lot from some of the networks -- ESPN still blows right past us like Carolina only has to show up to win Friday.  And if some of that rubs off on UNC, all the better (although Williams might show them any footage from our last trip to Tabacky Road).  But it seems like a lot of media crawled out of the woodwork and found their way to Athens.

When they interviewed UNC's players about Doug Gottleib's comments that they won't get passed KU, all they talked about was how they were gonna be in New Orleans. None of the usual take it one game at a time. I hope that's their mindset Friday :D

My crackpot theory...

It's because our name is Ohio. It's not a directional, some dead dude's name, or a bunch of adjectives followed by university or college. It's Ohio.

When you have directionals and other adjectives in your name, it sounds Cinderellaish. It makes for a good story. When you have just a state's name, it sounds stronger. Sounds like you should be in the tourney.

Kinda why I rally against the MAC adding directionals...

I don't endorse the furry lifestyle, but when the Bobkitten is involved things can change mighty quickly...
