The ones I know realize it was a fair and well-competed game. The crazies think the refs handed it to us.

McDavis reminds of Spike Lee with the Nicks, but he's not just a superfan, he's the PRESIDENT of the university. For those of us that want the best for OHIO athletics its good to have a prez that is that enthusiastic.

They didn't hand it to us. However, if I was on the USF side, the T and flagrant foul they got would really sting. Both were correct calls, but I disagree with those rules. The jersey pulling didn't seem to be too excessive, and I'm still not sure how a dunker is supposed to know if a guy is underneath him right away.

The T for hanging on the rim was the same one that the Buffalo guy got.  You can't hang on the rim and pull your knees up.  The USF guy even screamed.  It was an easy (and correct) call.  Same with the jersey grab.  Ivo almost did the exact same thing minutes later but he let go in time.

Which is why I said I'm well aware of the rule. I just don't agree with it. That's not hanging on the rim to me. Now doing a chin up, or slapping the backboard, would be a bit much. A lot of players yell when they dunk. When you are flying from one side of the rim, you are supposed to just slip off and continue going? For as much as they stress safety, I would think it is much safer for a player to hang on the rim after a dunk, and take a bit of time on the rim to land safely and correctly without hurting themselves. The rims can take the abuse.

If you can dunk then flush and go. There is no reason to grab a rim to dunk. The only reason to grab a rim is to protect your self. Glass like anyother substance has a fatigue and breakage factor. Pure physics and stresses.

I do not specifually eve seeing Kareem or Dr J or Micheal grabbing the rim and pulling up......

I guess I'm in the minority on it. I'm sure if such stat existed though more injuries happen on dunk landings than backboard mishaps.

Also, although I've never had the pleasure of dunking a ball on a 10' rim (got a volleyball down once thank you very much), I've played a few games with friends on 9' rims. This gives a good feel for a round of 32 game at the NCAA level for us who challenge with gravity. Anyway, every time there is a dunk in the half court, there is a chance of a body flying underneath, a guy jumping with you, etc. Every time you go airborne things can get messy on the landings. I have no problem with players dunking and swinging on the rim for a second or so to kind of regroup before coming down. I didn't get the feeling that either dunker in the last two technical fouls against Ohio actually showboated.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLsuG9dCckE

That is showboating on the dunk.

That is probably true. That is why the rule is there. Ask anyone who dunks if it is neccessary to hang on the rim to flush you wiil get a "no, but it feels good" ....so does taunting and holding the 3 fingers up which is entirely in the pervue of the ref to issue a warning or a tech....if kids were more inclined to play ball instead of Show Out we would not need this rule.....

As for the injuries.....that is why the rule exists. To provide for the safety of the players. Other than that pulling the rim down is just not needed, the great ones need not hang and kick their feet up or pull up on the rim to show they just threw down. There was no one near him, OTOH...the guy who backed his butt in under Reg on the oop should have got a blocking foul.....Reg would have flushed that one had he not looked down......

In the first "lockeroom" look-in from TBS, they had Groce talking to the team and he got choked up talking to/about TJ Hall. Anyone know what the reference was there or the backstory?

I inferred it to TJ accepting his role during the season when his minutes weren't always there.  Hall has been a great story the last couple weeks.  Well deserved by him.

That's the best part of this video. Groce says, "When TJ wasn't playing, he never was a distraction -- never." And then Groce gets choked up. I love how much it means to our coach that his players have bought in. It'd be easy to just laud DJ or Walt, but everybody played his part this year and accepted his role. I love that TJ got props like this.

By the way, this is twice Groce has gotten choked up on camera the last two games. Not trying to overstate anything, but he certainly seems close to these guys. I know he won't be here forever, but whenever he does leave -- even if it's this offseason -- no one should ever say he hasn't cared about this program every day he has been here. Love to see his emotion.

I think there were some folks on here predicting TJ might be one to leave after this year, but I've got think after the way he's been playing and the appreciation Coach is showing him that he's locked in and committed. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if TJ comes back next fall significantly better.
