After talking SO MUCH CRAP about Ohio University Bobcats over the past season, "The Fighting Paul Newmans" are still dancing while the Dukies are crying. Could the Bilanator handle the Mid-Majors now? Doubt it.

Bilas stuck his neck out by picking us over Michigan in a high-profile spot early in the Monday sportscenter. I wouldn't be calling him out now.

Bilas is also the idiot who advocates getting rid of automatic bids for conference champions.  Lehigh, Norfolk State, and OHIO might not have been in the tourney if he had his way.

He is no friend of the MAC or most other "mid major" schools/conferences. His $ comes from advertising revenue - no $ in that from mid major programs success.

I didn't see that. In his bracket prediction, he basically called us a push over. I've never observed JB say one nice thing about our club. I could even find that clip on ESPN.com. Can you please find a link to it? I'm curious to heard exactly what we said about us.

edit: typing this on an iPad is tough.

I've always found his takes on college basketball to be pretty reality-based. I don't agree with his dismissiveness of mid-majors, but we all have our perspectives. If I played and coached at Duke, I wouldn't think much of mid-major basketball, either. On most things he's one of the most cogent voices on television concerning college basketball.

There are many others out there who are way worse than Bilas. I can't find the link, but he was very complementary of Ohio on the selection show Sunday night. Basically said that Michigan better be careful of Ohio because "DJ Cooper can really play and is really, really good.". Also dropped in that Kellog can light it up from 3 and that he was Clark's son. He was very respectful of us so I'm not sure where the hate is coming from.

Jay Bilas picked OHIO to beat Michigan all week. Not sure why there is a problem here.

i am not sure Bilas actually picked OHIO.  He said a number of complimentary things, though, including that if there was one 13-4 matchup to beware of, it would be Ohio v. Michigan, and he wouldn't be surprised by an upset here.  But again, I don't think he ever actually predicted an Ohio win.

Agree or disagree with Bilas, he is perhaps the most, thoughtful and knowledgeable commentator on college basketball today, and that includes analysis of the sport in general as well as gameday work.

I can't find one example where Bilas picked OU. However, there are multiple examples were he didn't:

http://games.espn.go.com/tournament-challenge-bracket/en/entry?entryID=3709013

http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/2012/story/_/id/7676961/2012-ncaa-tournament-jay-bilas-pick-pick-bracket-analysis

"No. 4 Michigan over No. 13 Ohio: Ohio is solid defensively and a very good offensive rebounding team. D.J. Cooper is an outstanding guard and Nick Kellogg can really shoot it, but Michigan is better and should be able to win."

Of course, it's this quote that made me love JB from love him so (http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/7567922/college-hoops-top-68-rankings-ohio-state-buckeyes-top-3-michigan-state-loss)

"68. Ohio Bobcats
A fine institution in Athens, Ohio, that has produced such luminaries as Bo Pelini, Mike Schmidt, Peter King, Matt Lauer, Bob Brenly and John Swofford, Ohio U also holds the distinction of having educated Paul Newman, Arsenio Hall, Ed O'Neill and Don King without actually conferring degrees upon them. Of course, because those people were clearly not "students first" and did not complete their degrees, UConn will have to miss the 2014 NCAA tournament. Established in 1804, Ohio U opened its doors in 1808. I am sure that the four-year gap was to set up a suitable compliance office. The Bobcat mascot, affectionately named Rufus, was able to watch yours truly torch his namesakes not once, but twice.

In 1984, The Bilastrator hung 17 points on Ohio U and its fabulous front line of Voc Alexander and John Devereaux. Then, in a exhibition game between Ohio U and his Italian professional team, Basket Club Mestre, The Bilastrator hung 38 points and 19 rebounds on the Bobcats while Dave Jamerson, ESPN's own Reggie Rankin and then-head coach Billy Hahn watched in helpless awe of The Bilastrator's game, swag and trillness. Lazy, my big, white posterior. Of course, if Ohio U had D.J. Cooper back then, perhaps the Bobcats could have slowed down His Trillness. But I doubt it. Oh yeah, Ohio U is a very good defensive team that has beaten Marshall and Northern Iowa. I doubt that will be enough to snag an at-large bid, and Ohio U is not the best team in the MAC. The Fighting Paul Newmans will need to win the automatic bid to see tournament daylight."

I thought late in the week he changed his mind and liked OHIO to win,  but who knows. I get where you are coming from though NYghtmare. He certainly did take a few shots at OHIO.

He even said earlier this year that there should be only 32 teams in the NCAA Tournament with no automatic bids. That would eliminate most mid-majors. And he loves the "eye test," so he can just say Team A (BCS) is better than Team B (mid-major) with no real reasoning.

Jay Bilas' attitude toward mid majors puts the chip on Cinderella's shoulder.  He is playing the part for which he was cast.

Amazing he would say something like that about Paul Newman. Obviously at Duke they don't teach you to do your homework first, if they did he would know Paul graduated from Kenyon College one of the Ohio Five and one of the finest colleges or universities in the United States. Obviously you don't have to be a student first at Duke.

You do know that Paul Newman was a student at Ohio before he enrolled at Kenyon?  There are legends about his shenanigans in Scott Quad, which was then a women's dorm.

I never said he wasn't a student at Ohio. I was simply making the point that he was a student first or he would never  have  been accepted or graduated at Kenyon.  The stories of his drinking at Snow's tavern in Mt. Vernon are legendary also.

I think we are missing the point. Can't we all agree that JB is the Miami of analysts?
