Very happy VU fans, needless to say...obviously, tonight.

But a number of us have connections to Ohio University and were very happy with your win over Akron...what a thriller it was.  And the Bobcats gave Florida quite a scare last time they were here.

Anyway - stay away from cheapo hotels in areas with names such as "Trinity Lane" or "Dickerson Pike."  Pay a few more $$ and don't risk getting carjacked in the wrong area.

There is a good list of local places to eat on the Vandy forum...
http://vanderbilt.scout.com/3/nashvillerestaurants.html

Otherwise, this site always has good Nashville hotel and rental car deals...

Outside of downtown, what areas are safe? I'm cheap and don't want to pay $200/night downtown. Where can fans get cheaper hotels in a decent neighborhood?

Any hotel recommendations for us students with limited budgets? Specifically, what areas on Hotwire should I be looking in? I'm seeing a bunch of cheap rooms in all kinds of neighborhoods on there.

I lived in Nashville and you DEFINTELY want to stay away from Trinity and Dickerson, unless you like your hookers with no teeth. There's a group of hotels about a mile from the airport on Donnelson just past I40, a Wingate, a Spring Hill Suite, and some others, when I had coworkers in town they always stayed there and the rooms were nice and inexpensive. It was a few years ago but I want to say rooms were around $70, maybe.

Franklin, Smyrna. You might be able to find deals about a half hour away in Murfreesboro, home of MTSU.

There are a lot of cheap ones in the airport area, and it doesn't look too far from downtown. What part(s) of the city are Trinity and Dickerson in? Hotwire areas to choose from are:

Nashville International Airport
Downtown Nashville

Which of those would be the best bets in terms of safety, distance from the arena and price?

We had a group of Vandy students here this week for Alternative Spring Break. Great kids.

Areas to avoid....
east Nashville (especially Trinity, Dickerson, etc)
north Nashville (any)
Antioch - Harding Place
---------------------------------------

Best areas...
Downtown hotels within walking distance (Hilton, Union Station, etc.) - Big $$$
Vandy area (not far from Bridgestone Arena) - Marriott, Indigo, Hutton, really nice Holiday Inn, etc... also big $$
Airport area - Country Inn&Suites...Hyatt Place..Hilton Garden Inn...lots more... fairly reasonable $$
(not geographically very close to the arena)
Brentwood, Smyrna - pretty good if it's a major chain (Sheraton, Hampton Inn, etc)
(also not close to the Arena)

Murfreesboro is WAY too far from Nashville and is hosting the state high school championships next weekend.
This could also make rooms be short in supply in Smyrna and more $ than they are worth...which in turn makes Brentwood an even more logical suburban option.

Franklin area has a  Marriott at Cool Springs (others in the Franklin area too) usually have great weekend specials....I've stayed there many times   It's right on the freeway in to downtown ... about 20 minutes. Tons of great  eating and shopping in the area.  Very safe area

Hey I lived in Antioch and off of Harding and I only had my car stereo stolen once and only witnessed one next door neighbor get shot point blank in his doorway. You make it sound like its dangerous.

Nashville International Airport- good
Downtown Nashville- good
- good (touristy in a good way)
- good
- depends, could be sketchy
- good
- good. high end
- stay away
- ok
- not sure
- sketchy
- some ok, some real dangerous
- depends
- depends
- high end. good.
- ok

Which of those would be the best bets in terms of safety, distance from the arena and price?

If you've got a good price stay at the Opyland, its a sight to see. If you want to stay close to downtown go West and South West (west of I65). Franklin/Cool Springs is high end, thats where all the country stars live. Hotels near the airport are usually pretty good too.

Mt. Juliet at the new Providence shopping center area is nice.  The hotels are brand new.   All kinds of shopping and places to eat.  Not very close to downtown though.  But right next to I-40, convenient to the airport.

Are you familiar with the current state of ALL hotels at the Harding Place exit off 65?  They all look like crack houses now.

p.s. - the "Murfreesboro Road" in Nashville that leads directly into a hard-core ghetto is NOT the same as "Murfreesboro Road" in Franklin.  The one in Franklin is actually Hwy. 96 and has some good (and a few not as good) hotels.  The Cool Springs area of Franklin/Brentwood is very safe - just not close to the arena.

What about the Knights Inn on Spring St. Close to the arena and cheap.

Is this in a bad location, whats the catch?

18 people on Trip Advisor . com rated it as "Terrible" (their worst rating)

According to crime mapping . com there were 162 crimes reported within a two mile radius of that hotel in the last six days...not a misprint...look it up for yourself.  (in fairness "only" 2 crimes reported within 500 feet of the hotel in the last six days)

...stay at your own risk!!

Hah, wow. Good thing there is a no fee for cancellation. I think I might relocate to the airport area.

I'll just chime in that I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Broadway in 2005 and while it's not gleaming or sparkly, it was a really solid hotel and I didn't feel like my life was in danger or anything. (On a safety scale of Athens to Detroit, it was somewhere in the middle.) I think I paid about 180 at the time. I was surrounded by Philadelphians from Nova, though. Not the most charming bunch.

I'm stuck hoping and praying Ohio wins on Friday night this time around so I can get down there for Sunday.

That Holiday Inn that faces Centennial Park had a major renovation since 2005...it's really nice now.
(That is the park where the Parthenon is, for the artsy-fartsy cultural type fans)...there is also a Marriott and a Hampton Suites within about a block of there plus a Lowes (sp?) big-$$$ hotel, another Hampton just north of campus, a Courtyard Marriott also just north of campus...etc.

For those on a budget...and I can certainly appreciate how that is...

http://www.travelnow.com/index.jsp?position=21&street...

This might be as safe and close as you will get for $79 a night.  My own Dad (a Vanderbilt alum) who had quite a bit of $$ used to stay there when he was back in Nashville visiting even though he could afford a 4 or 5 star hotel...he just happened to like that particular LQ.

well, that certainly didn't help things I suppose.

Two weeks ago I stayed at a Grand Hyatt in downtown Cincy for $46. tomorrow night I'm getting the La Quinta at the Nashville airport for $79.  Not cool, but I'll still avoid breaking the bank I guess. Here's to sports!

DFC,  We stayed at that hotel years ago.  When I mentioned it to my wife a few minutes ago she responded, "It was a dump then, I hope it's improved."  My major memory is that it's near the railroad tracks and my son, a RR buff, enjoyed watching the trains.
