A student at Washington and Jefferson, a D3 school in Pennsylvania, has been expelled for holding up a sign offensive to a Westminster women's basketball player at a recent game.

Good! But W&J has allowed this type of thing to happen for a long long time. I find it ironic that the football coach was apologizing to the family, he's done some of these same things in the past.

I can see taunting a player over their own mistakes (arrests, etc.). But taunting a player about a dead parent is really despicable.

The article said the punk was "disenrolled" - not expelled.

Wouldn't "permanently expelled and banned from the campus for life" work?

I think "dis-enrolled" is the new PC euphemism for expelled, as expelled sounds just too punitive. I believe the meaning is exactly the same. I'd prefer just to say expelled! I'm not into euphemisms.

A sign makes it easier to identify someone doing something inappropriate. Playing the race card here is ridiculous.

I was referring to the comment from The Optimist about this guy being black and insinuating it was racist to expel the kid because there are some white girls down south who use the n word..

"Once again the Hoods come off..." Reminds me of a guy the other week that started his sentence with "I'm the least racist person you know"

I would hope most would agree racist are the most pathetic of pathetic assholes - so they fall within the group I identify.. The line for me is when attacks are personal - be it of racist root or otherwise (such as in this case). So if a direct answer is what you seek - YES - white people yelling "n-----" at a black athlete is grounds for expulsion. I will also add that this person holding up a sign with the date of a player's father's death is, to me, worse than a racist remark because they sought out a very personal, specific, hurtful message to deliver. Ignorance is one level of pathetic. Personal and vicious is a other level. Both levels deserve expulsion. Unfortunately others like to combine both levels.

In my mind, insults such as current NBA fans chanting "Westbrick" at Westbrook are not attacking - though he is now trying to ge fans tossed for yelling that out.

yes. it is one thing to be mean and ignorant. it’s another to also be cold, callous, calculated and cruel. to seek out how you can viciously rip someone’s heart out and then to do so when they are so vulnerable ( in this case playing a game in public for all to witness). This attack was planned, took intent, and took time to research what would be most cruel to this young lady. if that difference induces an “lol” from you, so be it.
