Let's face it...this team went as far as it could. Ending the year with basically a 6 man rotation doesn't equate to March success. The loss of Wilson and McDay were crippling and we knew it all year. Hopefully recruits like James and Brown can bring an element we definitely need on the wing. We need them to hopefully end up in the Carry/Rollins/Jacobs mold. Boals needs to reconfigure the offense.

The portal will be interesting. We should easily be losing 2-3 guys I would think and Boals will hopefully find magic with a transfer or two.

As for Ben Roderick, he should not be entering next season as a starter. I don't even have to look at the stats to realize he was probably the worst Division One player when it came to offensive efficiency ranking. His collapse was the biggest disappointment of the season. I've never seen a player completely lose it from one year to the next like Brod. Every time he shot the ball this season you never expected it to go in. And yet Boals kept running him out there thinking what we were all thinking....surely he can't go 33 games without making a significant contribution and 33 games later we are still waiting.

As far as the schedule goes, get some more quad 1 games scheduled and less quad 4 please. And please get back to playing in a November/December tournament.

Just a weird feeling right now. Hate that it's over, but already looking forward to October.

We absolutely should accept a CBI/CIT invitation. I'd like to see a healthy dose of IJ, Olumide, Clayton, and Towns in those games.

I hope we see one more year of Ben Vander Plas. Who wouldn't? I can't imagine he would go anywhere else and disrupt a grad program, so he's either playing basketball for Ohio, or he's moving on with what's next. He would need one player to transfer out in order to have a scholarship available....

There's one player on this roster who I would be genuinely surprised if he doesn't transfer. Do I even need to mention the name? Everyone else who can return has an angle where they can carve out a stable role in the rotation.

I think our defense will be as good or maybe even better next year. Scheme and effort expectations should carry over. Wilson returning helps. He's no rim defender, but his presence on the glass will significantly help end the opponents' possessions.

The offense has to get better. Need more games where we score in the 80s. Need to consistently shoot over even just 45% percent. Some of that could be new personnel, some of that could be scheme, some of that could be some guys improving. Roderick needs to find that stroke again. Sears should pop in the Jaaron Simmons highlight video. He's not Jason Preston, but he could be Jaaron. We should be running pick and pops with BVP and rolls with Wilson. Did we run a successful pick and roll all year? I can't remember.

The recruiting class addresses our biggest discrepancies: athleticism and scoring from the wings. I think most of our freshmen will go through some growing pains and learning curves, but I have a hunch that AJ Brown is going to come in and make an impact very quickly.

Boals said we called every Big 10, ACC, and SEC school for scheduling. We should do that again. We have it in us to be at-large good and we may be a little more appealing coming off a semifinal exit. If they don't want to schedule us again, go after high expectation mid majors. Bonnies owe us a game in Athens, don't they? We will go to Nashville to play Belmont. Let's get a H/H with Murray State. No P6 teams will line up to play them. Davidson, North Texas, call up Pitino and the Gaels.

I would hate to be Boals right now. Because we all know Roderick is a liability. But how exactly do you move on from him? I think the hard answer is you tell him he's an undersized power forward and he's absolutely not allowed to shoot a 3 under any circumstances. If he doesn't agree to that, encourage him to move along.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Vander Plas, but I just can't imagine him signing up for another year. Has anyone read the tea leaves in a manner that suggest he's coming back? Our only hope is he is so angry about the way this season ended that he can't leave this way.

I sure hope the recruits are amazing and that Boals approaches the season in a manner that sets up a 10-man rotation. This 7-man rotation burned out in historic fashion.

Damn... it's hard to get over a season that was once the best record in school history (19-3, and then 22-4) that ended with NO games after the conference tournament. A little unreal, actually. As much as last year was a dream finish, this was a nightmare finish.

Tbh, I don’t know how to feel about this season. I’m not mad but I’m just more confused I guess. This season will go down as the “what could’ve been” season. What if JP stayed? What if Lundo didn’t leave? What if Dwight doesn’t get hurt? What if BRod keeps up his shooting like last year? I mean look at what Boals was trying to salvage. We had a 13 year old (sarcasm) playing some this year and he was supposed to redshirt. IJ was gonna be more of a “if someone else fouls out” type of player and probably redshirt. Hell, we even had Olumide come in and play some lol who here would’ve thought that. Of course I would’ve loved to see this team win it all but another part of me is ready for next year.

We accomplished so much with all these circumstances happening and we made the best of it. Main thing that needs to change: offense needs to improve. I have a feeling AJ Brown and Elmore James could be the key to reviving our offense. Keep up the great defense and return to a 10 man rotation - We could be dangerous next year. Also, what a ride this year reviving the O-Zone. I plan to keep the momentum up. WE WILL BE BACK!!!

Roderick hit some of the biggest shots in Ohio history in the UVA tournament win. He's not going anywhere because of one bad year and he's not gonna stop pulling the trigger. He was the Ohio Gatorade POTY for a reason. Maybe it's a confidence thing. Like a golfer who gets the shanks. Just needs to work it out. Hopefully he's not a Nick Anderson and totally lost it forever based off one incident.

And his lost shot is nowhere near what we experienced with Ivo Baltic.

Re: Ivo. Stats seem to suggest otherwise.

Ivo from Freshman to Senior year FG percentage = 48.8, 53.5, 46.8, 46.8.

Roderick Freshman thru Junior = 36.1, 47.5, 34.8.

Only thing I recall on Ivo was he slumped on FT's but also was at the line during that time less and less. Brod on 3's went from 36.7, 39.6 to 22.4 percent.

Exactly. Does he put in the extra time working on his shot and rebuilding his confidence? When BVP has had a tough stretch, we always saw social media posts from Ohio Basketball showing him out there with a manager taking lots of extra shots. Does Roderick do the same? My spies say not so much.

Huh?

Absolutely false.

Ivo was never this horrific. You must be thinking of his lack of trips to the free throw line his last year.

Relax. This is a fan message board. I'd expect nothing otherwise. A bit healthy, actually.

Talking about next basketball season is a lot more fun than debating whether the football team will win one game or zero next year.

But it really is way too early to have an informed opinion. We have no clue what the roster will look like given the ease of transfers and players who may or may not use remaining eligibility. Everything is speculative now but I’ll contribute this speculation: BVP is not coming back.

I'm expecting the worse with BVP. Also, everyone I've created a 22-23 spreadsheet for next year and will work it when I get the time!

This board absolutely killed Ivo his Senior year for his seemingly out of nowhere regression. In fact I'm pretty sure there was a debate on who's lack of aggressive play was more puzzling; his or Tettleton's.

One thing I'm looking forward to is a season without cancellations and postponements (at least for covid; there's always snow). Some teams, including ours probably, were disadvantaged because they had to play several extra games in February. Those extra games down the stretch can make a difference. I don't think it's any coincidence that the #1 seed in the MAC tourney the past two seasons had the fewest disruptions to its schedule.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

You ever wonder why some folks here are in their current occupations, and not a head coach or GM of some NBA teams.

There are definitely some expert basketball talent evaluators in our midst. Just ask them.
