Bobcats aren't gonna get an at-large bid should they not win the MAC tournament but if they can win the regular season title they would earn an automatic to the NIT should they lose in Cleveland.  Bobcats might be able get say an Xavier,  Pittsburgh or Cincinnati in the Convo in the NIT.  Not a bad perk if we can win our first regular season title since 1994. NIT field will be strong this year as the NCAA tournament will have many mid majors due to several mids being locks like Murray State, Creighton, St Mary's and Wichita State.

I think it's too premature to say an at large bid is completely out of the question.  Say we lose to Akron in the finals and finish the season 27-5, winning 14-15 going down the stretch.  That is too good of a resume to ignore.

But ignore it they will.  Better teams then OUrs have stayed home and the MAC hasn't done a lot over the years to make them regret the one bid stance.  But pardon my insensitivity.

Even in the scenario described, a home NIT bid against an A10 or Big East team is a lot to hope for.  Ask yourself, as the NCAA running the NIT now will, will more people travel from Cincy to Athens to see that game or the other way around?  What match-up puts the most butts in seats because that's all the NIT is about these days.

I agree with this statement.  Regardless, I'm starting to join the school of though of, "let's worry about the next game".  The next four games are games they should win, Then getting 3 of the last four would sew up one of the top 3 seeds in conference tournament play.  I'm convinced It'll take at least 12-4 to get to that point. With that said, lets beat Toledo.

The problem with the NIT (and to a much lesser degree the NCAA) is that they aren't selecting teams 100% based on the whole "best teams" adage.   They're also concerned about the interest the teams will generate on TV and at the gate.

I agree. In fact, I think if we are able to win the regular season title we are going to be in great shape.  The problem is that it is going to be very difficult to actually win it.  Akron has only three road games left in conference and only two against the East. We have five including games at Kent, at Buffalo and at Fiami.  The way I see it we can lose one more game and win the regular season title but that's about it.  If we can do that I think we will have a very real chance at an at large.  The problem is actually doing it is pretty unlikely.

But what about an at-large bid to the NIT if we don't win the MAC regular season? What kind of record do you think we will need to get in the NIT?

I think go undefeated and lose in the MAC final and Ohio would have a shot at an at-large. RPI would be in the 40s from what I calculated. If Ohio loses even once, the RPI will be closer to 60 and that will not get an at-large bid. Akron is in position that it could probably lose one game and still have a shot at an at-large.

As for the NIT, it would take a bit of a collapse for the Bobcats not to get into the NIT. A top-90 RPI finish is likely as long as Ohio goes a little over .500 down the stretch, and that should be good enough to get into the NIT. Of course, I'm not doubting the Bobcats' chances of winning the MAC tournament.

Of course I want us to get into the Big Dance, but I also want us to get some kind of reward for a great season. Although I would be disappointed if we can't make the Show, the NIT would be a great consolation prize, with a chance at making it to MSG!!

If we don't finish 1st or 2nd I doubt we get an NIT bid. They guarantee all conference winners (that don't make the big dance) a bid.  That thins the spots considerably. Last year Marshall was left out with a 55 RPI.  They were bypassed for several Big 6 teams that had much worse RPI's.

Pretty silly to name something the National Invitational Tournament Tournament.

All I know is that I went to the Akron, Kent St and Buffalo games so far this year and we're as good as, if not better, than all 3 of these teams.  Haven't seen a team OHIO cannot beat or I would consider us to be an underdog to.  I have no confidence in an At-Large or the NIT, or any other man-picked events.  I just know that we'll go into Cleveland with as good of a chance to win-it as does Akron or anybody else.  Getter' dun and forget the speculation.

NIT-ology has us projected as a 4 seed right now for the NIT, playing NMSU in the 1st round.

The tough thing about projections like this is that right now, all the top teams are projected to win. But there are upsets in the conference tournaments that put an unexpected team into the NCAA tournament field and that has an effect on the NIT field by shifting some out of the NCAA down to the NIT. Plus the NIT having to take conference winners that don't win their tournaments can add teams to the NIT field that wouldn't otherwise qualify (from low-major conferences).

Last year, there were 14 NIT teams that automatically qualified. Of those, five had RPIs of much lower than 100, so they would not have qualified otherwise. A couple others probably (90s RPI) would not have gotten into the NIT field without the auto qualifying. Last year's conference tournaments didn't cause a lot of at-large bids to be eliminated. Maybe just from Richmond winning the A-10 tournament. Altogether, it was about eight spots from the NIT that got taken away by confernece tournament results. I think a lot of years it could be more. I think a 4 seed now would probably pretty safe for getting into the NIT field, but I wouldn't want to fall much lower or the Bobcats could get pushed out of the NIT.
