You could see a glaring, potential weakness of this 2011-2012 team more than a year ago (lack of a center, lack of large, gritty power forwards) but they didn't do anything about it. I thought Belton could be a key contributor, but it looks like he's not healthy enough.

It was a drag to see Torian Oglesby, listed at 6'7" 206, own the paint at the end of last night's game. BGSU had 5 blocked shots; Ohio had 0. I thought Jon Smith was supposed to be a shot blocker?

Ohio's still a good team with good potential, but it feels to me like there's a ceiling on that potential due to the lack of an inside presence. Hard for me to understand why this wasn't addressed as part of the recruiting strategy. Groce had to know there was a good chance that Belton and Jacobs weren't going to be ready.

Hey, Delvar Barrett works at the Athens Social Security office. Does he have any eligibility left?

Maybe a little Thomas Stephens action would be in order.

There's this guy named Mike McQueen ...

Totally agree. Unless a miracle happens, does anybody truly believe Jacobs will play important minutes in a Bobcat uniform? This team needs another big body down low and it doesn't have it.

Put yourself in the shoes of a father whose son in 6-9 or 6-10 and is getting a lot of attention from mid-majors.  Then along comes Ohio and its big man coaching specialist, a guy who was trained all his life to play guard.  Would you really think your son's skills would be honed to the max, giving him a chance at taking the next step?  What evidence would you have to the contrary - the play of Reggie Keely, who looked lost out there all night last night (and much of last season)?  The development of Ethan, who can't even get in the game in slop time? Bobcat Dragon says I have it in for Dustin Ford as big man coach because of his height; no, it's because he has no street cred among potential recruits - and no resume of success.

There are big men out there that can help this team. I didnt notice a huge effort from my point of view of the team really looking for one or two. I did see the press releases and the interviews about the great guards Coach Groce was wining and dining at BWWs. Ricardo Johnson can not hit the broad side of a barn at this point he has had great looks all season..just looks like several players do the same types of things on the court and Coach is not playing toward their assets. I say trash this current offense...swing ..swing...Ivo pop out to the ft line..kick out..missed shot..turnover..and let the guys RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN GUN GUN GUN  GUN.

I disagree about Ric.  He's a better shooter this year.  Even from three.

Jeff, what are you doing? This is a fan message board and we've lost the last two games! Clearly we can't let the facts get in the way of a good narrative.

Ricardo Johnson --
FG% '10-'11 vs. '11-12 - .330 vs .436
3pt% '10-'11 vs. '11-12 -  .130 vs. .286

So, yes. Ric has improved his game, certainly he has room to keep improving it, but that's a definite increase.

SBH, go back and look at Jerome Tillman, KVK, Devaughn Washington stats prior to Coach Ford, then look at their #'s after he had a season or 2 to work, and DEVELOPE them.  Look at the strides, Ivo and Reggie have made in the last 2 years respectively.  Give him the rest of this year and next year with John Smith and Tyquane Gourd, with their athleticism.  Look out.  Everyone thinks it's easy to coach bigs, 75% of bigs had success is HS because they are usually 4-5 inches taller, and 20-30 lbs bigger than the players their competing against!  I won't into the technical aspects of teaching bigs.  It may confuse ya!  But from experience in coaching for the last 14 years of my life.  Bigs take a while to develope, and Coach Ford is doin a HELL of job.  In my opinion.  If you disagree, good for you!  We'll just continue to disagree! And I'm just wondering is street creed really that important to potential recruits, and I think his resume speaks for itself!  Stats don't lie my man!

Go Cats!

Did you see Reggie play on Saturday night?  Have you see Ivo's defensive and rebounding breakdowns?  Borna in another thread highlights a chronic defensive breakdown that has cost us this year.  That doesn't really look like significant progress to me.  And here's another stat to look at: number of quality bigs recruited under the current regime.

We are not going to get the big so the only other option is a pure shooter which is just as big of a need. Is the kid coming next year the answer because Kellogg doesn't appear to be. We can still be a very good team top 25 with the addition of a pure shooter.

I'm not expecting much from Belton considering he's not even on scholarship.  But I guess the question still to be answered is what the heck happened to Jacobs?  Was he that raw coming here or is he buried in the dog house for some unknown reason.  Hard to know considering he doesn't even get situational minutes on the court.

The stats don't back you up.  He's hitting about 45% from three I think.  He just needs to get in sync re:  the offensive flow and get more shots up.  He did have an off game at BGSU, 1 for 7 I think.  He'll be fine.

Walt and a few others can also shoot threes.  We're OK in that area.  We've just had two "off" games in a row.

My understanding is that Caris Lavert is a good three point shooter.

Hope Jacobs can figure it out, but it sure doesn't sound like Groce has any confidence in the guy.  Reminds of when Hunter brought in Andy Kanzig. As long as Groce doesn't bring in the LaFerla twins, I'll give him a pass on Jacobs.

Rivals says Belton has a hip injury and hasn't practiced in January.

We might not get the big, but we needed to get a big. It didn't have to be Greg Oden.

Partial list of former Bobcat bigs who weren't prized recruits but had legitimate size or played like they did, knew how the game went and would've worked fine:

KVK, Terren Harbut, Jeff Boals, Rich Stanfel, Nate Cole, Jamie Brock, Ed Sears

A few of these guys weren't that mobile and wouldn't have been perfect for Groce's style, but the point is that Keely, Baltic and Smith is too thin of a frontcourt.

Not trying to be Captain Obvious, though ... and I really don't have good insight on why it's this way. Assumedly, the Alex Kellogg and Maurice Pearson departures plus Jacobs not developing are major factors.
