D.J. Cooper ranked the 93rd best basketball player in the nation. Only other MAC player was Javon Mccrea coming in at 91.

DJ absolutely belongs. His stats jump off the page.

I am a bit surprised that Javon Mccrea is the top MAC player. I think he is very good, but is he better than Justin Greene?

Without a doubt. An absolute handful. Kid is gonna be a beast for 3 more seasons. Gotta have a game plan for that one.

Not sure there is gameplan in the MAC capable of stopping him Borna. Reggie kind of eased him onto the floor last year and the kid showed a glimpse of his talent. I'm betting he dominates the MAC over the next 3.

The fact McCrae was the last player cut for the national U19 team shows how good people think he is. I'd probably peg him as the favorite for MAC Player of the Year honors this year. Now that Buffalo's other scoring threats have moved on, he's going to really put up big numbers.

HIs style will put him at the line a lot. Needs to improve FT %. Only weakness I've noticed in limited amount of time seeing him play.

You are kidding eh?

Flizen is by far one of the purest shooters I have seen in years. Tommy had a HUGE amount of respect for him saying "he's the best shooter in the MAC, even better than the kids from CMU a year ago." We will see if they have a lack of scorers. Of course Watt will still make up for his lack of talent with cheap shots, elbows and garbage around the rim he grabs with his dirty play disguised as work ethic.

My problem with UB vs the MAC is their offense is finally getting to the point where they can execute it....that is a problem for a group of kids with defensive ADD.  3 passes and a back screen and to quote Goose speaking to Maverick "There he gooooooooeeeesss!!!!"

Not only is Filzen a great shooter, he's an exceptional floor leader. He was extremely motivational to his teammates at the Convo last year.

Totally impressive, and I'd take three Zach Filzens on my team any day.

As good a shooter as Filzen is, he absolutely cannot create space. You have to run plays for him and use teammates to try and spring him.

OMG. Never heard that argument before. Can't create space, stands in the corner. You guys who hold on to this argument ever take time to think it through and really look at that player in an open gym. Perhaps it is a product of the offense they are in and what role the coach has defined for them. I know the only chance for you to see them is what you seee on the floor but to label a kid with this shows ignorance toward his real abilities and lets me know you may not know as much about hoops as portrayed. Please. THis is like typecasting actors and is one of the main reasons AAU ball got so big. Coaches would see kids in the HS setting and get an impression. Once Summer ball opened up they often found the contstraints the HS coach put on a kid colored the impression to the point where they saw him under a different cocah in a different situation he was a whole different player.

I have seen Filzen take guys off the dribble as well as off the curl making the choice to go to the hole or rise up lightneing quick and shoot over the screen while his defender slipped under. Buffs offense leaves him open for many good looks.....think about what most of us love about hoops. A well executed play resulting in a nice soft 3 ball slipping through the net or a kid like FIlzen trying to break someone down every time down the floor. If you prefer the latter I suspect you are totally enoamoured of the NBA and are lamenting the loss of a season while most of those who really love their TEAMS and programs are happy to have our past time playing and showing the world what a TEAM looks like.

I hae watched the Buffalo games of the last 3 years over and over and over disssecting the infamous meltdown and the victories ad nauseum. If you thik Filzner is one dimensional you have not been watching from those fancy courtside seats and paying much attention......perhaps now that you are on press row you are happy to echo sentiments of others and pigeon hole kids rather than actually llook at them and figure out what their strengths and weakness' are. That's the kind of stuff that gets me into rant mode. Sorry. SHoddy analysis p o's me.

If he doesn't do it in a game, it's completely irrelevant. I can sink a ton of free throws in a row in a casual setting. Won't matter a bit if I can't do it when it counts. I will say this is illustrative of the different ways in which we think.

Quote:
Perhaps it is a product of the offense they are in and what role the coach has defined for them.

Perhaps. But I doubt Reggie made Filzen one of the centerpieces of his offense and simultaneously neglected to incorporate his abilities to put the ball on the floor and get to the line.

Quote:

Yeah, I judge on results. I'm weird like that.

Quote:
but to label a kid with this shows ignorance toward his real abilities and lets me know you may not know as much about hoops as portrayed.

To paraphrase you, this again? Someone disagrees with you and they don't know basketball. Buy a new hat, please.

Quote:

Me too. But have you seen Filzen do it? There's a decent chance I saw him play more than you last season. This is not part of his game.

Quote:
Buffs offense leaves him open for many good looks

...At least until coaches realized he shoots threes almost exclusively. He is not a good shooter inside the arc (41%), doesn't get to the line (less than 2 FTA/game) They adjusted defensively and his production fell through the floor. He shot 32.6% from three the last month of the season. And if he's not making those shots, he's not getting any looks closer to the basket. He has to make those shots to get any production closer in.

Great. Total red herring, but great.

It's true. I was eating pretzels.......

Now? Where have you been?

Yeah. Because I happen to agree with... well, "others" (I don't know who these others are), I don't think for myself. Fact: Two people can't come to the same conclusion independently.

Quote:
Sorry. SHoddy analysis p o's me.

Funny. I get annoyed when people try to take me to task because they read one thing I write and act like I claimed it as a universal truth. You didn't actually refute my argument, just that you've heard this before, there are guys like him that do more, and I've been echoing the sentiments of others (who are these people?). You say he's not one-dimensional but failed to say what else he does.

I thought Filzen graduated. That's going to be tough with them having such a good inside-outside presence. I was considering Mulkey being gone, too, but they'll probably miss his defense more than his offense.

JSF.

I am so sorry. I had stopped responding to your posts because after dissecting things and manipulating logic I am always wrong. I will do better at not paying attention to them in the future. Your logic defies convention.

I have built a shooter fromthe ground up that led the NCAA in TS%. I have built quite a few other shoooters inthis town and constantly work with grade school kids teaching shooting skills and defining technique.  Tommy  is now "creating space and getting shots up" and putting up numbers as I always knew he could.  In the absence of team politics and role definitions he always had the ability to  generate the lines where he "came to life and was proving to tough to stop as he scored freely on the perimeter and  getting himself to the free throw line at will."  as he did  the last game he played. This is the same thing folks said he could not do here. His coach is wanting at least 20 shots a game from him, a role he is looking forward to but has never fulfilled any place but the Y  or the park, choosing to do exactly what his coaches defined for him.  Perhaps the problem is the pigeonholing that goes on and not the players true abilities.

YOu said "Filzen needed.....". I contend he does not. Perhaps he also will have to move on and prove that he has more ability than exhibited in the place he is to show folks that there are more dimensions to him than Reg lets him use. I see his upside and his skills in woarm ups and how he plays, you see what is on the floor and what his numbers say and make a judgement on that. I understand what you are saying but at the heart of the matter your statement is wrong. I am not opening this up for you to dissect  stellar careers doing what both of those players accomplished in the roles they were given. There are not many kids Tommy looked at me and said "that kid is one of the best shooters I have ever faced." Filzen got that from him. I saw the same thing on tape and in the Buffalo games I recorded before and after we played them. I owuld suspect that you do not know ho wmany hours I spend at home running games over  and over on my DVR before and after we play a team, making notes and breaking down individuals. My dad was a scout for Rupp, it is in my genes to do so.  Filzen is a great shooter and a smart defender that also got in the lane and scorched us with effort and putbacks as they killed us in a 2nd half win last year that was sparked by his performance, leadership and BBIQ,  I look for a nice senior year.

I am going to leave it at that and let others make up their own minds. I am not going to belabor this in the future by putting up posts and having you dissect them line by line. I will merely make it a point to say that I think you are right or wrong but I am not going to waste time and energy that would be better spent in the gym working with players and enjoying the breakdown of film....or on the Kawi.

These posts turn into a bunch of humblebrags that it's sickening to even read. Good thing we worked in that you built Tommy (what is he, some robot project in the back of your garage you worked on?) Also, name drop Rupp some more.

This is exactly the point. I talk about Filzen, you think it's about Tommy. It's not at all. Tommy is much better at creating space than Filzen and he showed that a few times while he was here.

But, again, I disagree with you so I defy logic and I'm wrong. Fine. You don't respect my approach or how I think. But don't act victimized when you ranted first. Don't get offended because I have the audacity to respond to comments you make publicly, especially if they're directed at me.

And Filzen has had nowhere near a stellar career and did not kill us with putbacks in Athens. He had one offensive rebound and didn't put it back up. His two buckets inside the arc were and and-1 off a drive and layup and a midrange jumper.

But he's also a deadly shooter when he gets a look and someone defenses have to account for. McCrea's development should give him ample opportunity to bomb away from the outside. I never said he was a bad player. Just the opposite. I've been positive on him for a long time.

He was very good last year. He'll be very good this year. He was a non-factor his sophomore year and an end of the rotation guy his freshman year at Northern Arizona. That doesn't fit my standard of a stellar career (if he had a stellar career, what will DJ have? Interstellar?).
