In a weird way, the deeper into the season we go with our top guys not getting Covid the more nervous I get. Would feel much better if most of them already had it by the time March hits...Would hate to have an outbreak at the wrong time. Am I saying I hope they get Covid, of course not. But if you're under the mindset that everyone is going to get Omicron, it makes you wonder if this is the best strategy right now.

Maybe I知 just being cynical (or clever), but based on what I知 seeing in the article (the athletes in the hotel all lives on campus, students living on campus have to undergo regular testing even if asymptomatic, the MAC does NOT require regular asymptomatic testing for vaccinated athletes), this isn稚 being done to keep the hotel-Ed athletes from being exposed to COVID so much as it is to keep them from weekly screening/asymptomatic testing (thus keeping them from being pulled into COVID protocols and quarantine for an asymptomatic infection).

Am i reading thisbincorrectly?

Possibly, but the athletes who live on campus have a campus address. I wouldn't think that exempts them from regular testing just because they're currently "living" at the Fairfield Inn.

Agree. My argument (if I had to make one) would be that because the University is requiring them to live at the Fairfield Inn, their rooms at the Inn are de facto on-campus housing, so they should have to meet the testing requirements for on-campus students.

As for the cost, the Athletics Dept could keep it out of the budget by giving Fairfield free advertising at the Convo, Peden and elsewhere. Don't know if they're doing that but it would help make it a non-issue.

I had posted about the NCAA recommending schools follow CDC protocols.

I believe that would be a 5 day isolation if you test positive.
Then done.

Does anyone know if that's what the MAC is doing ?

This is only partially true. At our school, we are now at the 5 day isolation calendar, but there is a slight twist. After the 5 days of isolation, you are to remain fully masked at all times from days 6-10 when around others. For us, that means having students eat in isolation from days 6-10 because this is the one time they are unmasked in the building.

If the MAC were to follow the CDC guidelines, that would mean that the players, while in days 6-10, would have to play wearing a mask. Would that be something players are willing to do or the school/conference were to require?

Five days before mingling BUT that doesn't mean on the 6th day an athlete should be guarding the opponent's top scorer.

It is prudent to ease back into the routine of strenuous activity after having symptoms or a delay in getting back to peak performance is possible or worse.

Clearly, Miles Brown was out longer than 5 days and hopefully the trainers had him easing back into the activity it takes to be an NCAA D1 player.

There's an article in today's The Post about O.U. changing its covid isolation
protocols to follow the CDC.

Test positive,5 days isolation.

According to article that covers the period when a person could be contagious.

The article doesn't mention masking after that.

O.U. has also never clarified whether, if a person does test positive, they
have to continue to be tested every week.

Its a conundrum because, according recent "in services" my wife has had at
her hospital, a person can test positive for up to 12 weeks, vaxed or not.

What's up with the budget numbers in the Athens News?

I saw a WOUB article from June with a 2021 university budget forecast for expenses/transfers totaling $695 million -- far more than the amount reported. Instead of athletics representing 8% of expenses, it would be less than 3% if I calculated correctly.

If I were managing athletics budgets, I would certainly look at cost/benefit for moving some of the players to a more isolated setting. Business disruption does have financial impact. So the question is, does this risk mitigation strategy make sense. And, is it worth a bit of criticism to implement.

If the men's basketball budget or at worst, the athletics department budget incurs all the cost of putting players in a hotel, I can't see the criticism from a financial standpoint.

Now, if as suggested above, the move is to circumvent an asymptomatic testing requirement, you might have an ethics criticism. It would seem the team would be exploiting a loophole in campus testing protocols. But if the move does not present additional health risk to the players or others in the community, I can't see that criticism either.

There was an article in The Post last Friday (1/14/22) that at the most recent
Board of Trustees meeting ,O.U. projected a $36 M "positive operating budget" for 2022.

That should provide funds for something like this.
And,(cough, cough) buying out a certain coach's contract. :-)

You are exempt from testing if you have tested positive in the last 90 days according to the university.

Regarding the hotel stay, the Fairfield Inn is likely a ghost town these days. They would be happy to get some revenue, albeit reduced, for some period of time. I知 certain we are paying, just some negotiated rate.
