Isn't this also a significant revenue stream, and we're missing out for the 2nd year in a row?

I Hope coach Boals stays a long time like Coach Hunter but this kinda “no backbone leadership” by the University will be something he considers when other universities come knocking.

I don’t about the situation at Ohio, but my understanding is that these aren’t typically big money makers. They are often used to help supplement incomes for lower paid basketball staff once expenses (gym rental, maintenance staff, insurance, etc.) are paid. I suppose for overnight campers there is revenue for residence life/dining services like other conferences/camps.

In terms of team camps, the high school programs I know are sticking to one-day shootouts and organizing their own 4-8 team scrimmage days vs. overnight camps. Several factors are at play, part of which include uncertainty about COVID-19 protocols until recently.

This was a 3 day team camp, 30 teams, that is 30 teams staying in dorms, eating at dining halls or filling local hotels.

Were all teams slated to attend and ready to go? Maybe I'm missing it, but have we seen an actual reason stated for the cancellation?

The online Ohio University 2020 Budget Book shows total athletic revenue forecast of $9.25 million. This includes $2.3 million of private support and $6.9 million of internal/external sales. It does not include subsidy from student fees or other institutional support.

Athletic camp gross revenue was budgeted at $405,000 as part of internal/external sales. The updated forecast showed gross revenue of less than $240,000 or 2.6 percent of $9.25 million. The budget book doesn’t break this down in terms of related expenses so this source cannot show net proceeds.

There are lots of excellent reasons to hold summer athletic camps, but net proceeds are not likely to produce significant resources for a large athletic department based on the university’s numbers.

I’m sure the department and basketball program would move forward with camps if sign-ups indicated an excess of revenue over expenses or even break even. It gets potential students on campus and gets your programs in front of coaches/players. It can also be a touch point for alumni who have children and send them to campus.

My guess is with President Nellis on his way out, there are some political axes to grind. I mean not only his Ohio opening up, but blue states like Massachusetts are allowing full crowds at Fenway etc.

I have been told that the faculty opposition to sports budgets, salaries etc has never been more defiant, expecially with the university's budgetary woes. All summer camps in our area are running at full capacity, so again there has to be another reason. I am sure this doesn't sit well with coaches trying to promote their programs. I am guessing shaninigans like this will continue until the new president puts their stamp on all of this.

I know this will lend this to potentially be in "Siberia", but this is what has angered me from the beginning with COVID. It should have never been, nor should it be moving forward, a political issue, or a red vs blue issue. It should be about the health and safety when making decisions, and doing what is right with the information present at the time of the decision being made. Period.

Specifically as it relates to the Ohio basketball camps, maybe the decision could have been made prior to the changes according to the state and CDC recommendations, thereby making a change of course something Ohio athletics simply didn't want to do. Or maybe they're operating with an abundance of caution. Who knows? Not me, and probably not most of us on this message board.

So,question 1:
Are you one of the "some" ?

Question 2:
If you are,can you share the reason ?

Question 3:
If you are and can't share the reason,"why not" ?

Campus authorities are NOT allowing outside groups on campus at this time due to COVID. And this is NOT an OHIO Athletics decision.

It would be interesting to know when the decision was made to cancel.

Given the speed at which things are "opening up",including Ohio ending its mask mandate and then pretty much all health mandates on 6/2,they may have "jumped the gun".

3 weeks ago was the final decision, after asking for a reconsideration.

Maybe we should consider moving the camps offsite to local high schools since our team is so used to doing that anyway.

Just today the University just announced Wellworks will reopen on June 1st. By scheduled appointment only, masks mandatory, and they moved equipment into multiple rooms so people are not around anyone. Vaccinated or not. The rest of the State is opening up, and OHIO is going backwards.

To give you an idea of the extent to which "protocols" are in place, you can't even get a scorecard and pencil when you play golf on the OU course.

I visited the campus and went to my nephew's baseball game on Saturday. If you sat in the outdoor stands you had to wear a mask and had an assigned seat far from others. We sat on the third base side on the hill side and no one wore a mask. They had to have your name before they left you in. The guy at the gate seemed to ease up as the game went on. My niece didn't have a ticket and they left her in. Played golf this morning and as long as you were vaccinated, you didn't have to wear a mask in the clubhouse in Medina county. No sure that is true in Summit County.

Common core golf.

Exactly! Not sure why some here can’t believe the University still isn’t cutting their own wrist a thousands slashes at a time. Not getting kids on campus for the summer is just silly! Huge recruiting tool!

City Council lifted mask mandate last night for public places in keeping with CDC guidelines. Local businesses can still require masks if they like.
