This does not mean done deal leaving, right? Just like the men who don't hire an agent?

I think you're correct. The draft is April 15 and she has a month after that to return to Ohio.

Cece is now listed in ESPN's mock WNBA draft. She is projected as the #33 pick by the Indiana Fever. CMU's Micaela Kelly is projected to be the last player chosen, at #36. Third rounders rarely make a roster in the 12-team league, but hey, getting drafted gives her a chance.

She can come back even if she's drafted, right?

I don't think so. In April 2020, NCAA enforcement sent out a memo regarding eligibility in connection with the WNBA draft. It says that if a player goes through the draft and is not drafted, she can regain eligibility by declaring her intention to resume intercollegiate participation within 30 days after the draft.

But if she is drafted, the memo states: "A women's basketball student-athlete will lose her eligibility IF: ... She enters the draft AND is drafted by a professional team." There is no mention in the memo as to a way of regaining eligibility once a player is drafted.

https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/enforcement/2020ENF_WNBA...

Does anybody know if those rules have been changed for the 2021 WNBA draft?

Well that sets up an awkward situation of being tempted to root for her to NOT get drafted.

Thanks, Joe Foss!

BTW, really like your name. I was a fan of the AFL back when Foss was commissioner in the 60s.

Not for me - I hope she goes all in and gets to hear her name called. Not only would she be the first Ohio Bobcat to be drafted, she would be only the fifth MAC player, by my count. The others are Cierra Dillard (Buffalo 2019); Crystal Bradford (CMU 2015); Stephanie Raymond (NIU 2007); and Tamara Bowie (Ball State 2003). Only Raymond and Bradford made a WNBA roster, each playing in the league for 1 year.

A normally reliable poster on the RebKell board says that Cece has withdrawn from the WNBA draft.

Edit: ESPN confirms it as well.

Hopefully. Ohio had not announced that she is coming back. If her intention is to try to play professionally in any league next year I doubt that would have pulled her name out of the draft when she probably was going to get drafted. She also doesn't seem like a likely candidate to just graduate and start a career for that same reason. However, She could try to transfer. Almost any program would want her.

That's great news for Ohio and for Cece too as she gets a year to develop some aspects of her offensive game.

I've always said she is capable of getting a quadruple double. (Her one triple double was short on rebounds). I searched and found 4 women who have done it in college hoops, but I don't believe any were from a D1 school. Now she gets another season.

Anyway, it should be a fun year to follow Ohio basketball, men and women.

Fantastic news to have Cece back next year. I agree, it's going to be a great year to follow all hoops. Cece's return of course begs the asterisk questions of
her final stats over a five year period which will be unbelievable, they are already crazy good of course over a four year period. How long will it take to put her in the rafters? It took way too long for Mast IMHO.

Johnson apparently is graduating even though she was a junior. Since she had an injury plagued year and also has pro prospects it is hard to imagine her doing anything but playing next year. I think that Hooks returning to Ohio is a good sign that Johnson also is. The other really key player to watch is Gabby Burris. She would be in a fifth year of eligibility if she returns.

Wow! I might need to get an apartment in Athens because I won't want to miss a single men's or women's game next season.

She will obliterate the record books, as will be happening at programs all over the country the next few years.

Glad she's coming back. She'll go much higher in the draft next if she continues to improve. Barring a bad injury, this will be a win-win situation both for her and for dear olde OHIO!

I would think, barring injury, she also has a great shot at becoming the all time leading scorer for the program. No knowing the numbers, I don't know how close she currently is. But I think it has to be within reach.

With a full season, she'll do it. She's less than 500 points away and she already scored 500+ in each of the last three seasons. I believe she's already sitting in second place.

Now, does the record get an asterisk next to it if she breaks it?

If she plays a full 5 years, is she really the All-Time leading scorer?

Yes. Any player that gets an extra year of eligibility should have an asterisk denoting that.

I don't disagree, but it's a slippery slope. Take the men's game. In the 1960's, OHIO was averaging about 24 games per season. In the 2010's, we were averaging 34 games per season due to a now longer season. Do we give an asterisk to a player from 2018 beating something set by a player in 1967? I don't believe that we do. Yet that player was able to play 10 more games a season, or up to 40 games more in a career. This does not even bring into play that until 1968, players were not allowed to play as freshmen.

Last year (the extra year) saw teams play as few as 16-18 games (Iona made the tournament and ended season at 12-6). So a player graduating in 2022 will have more games on their resume than that of a graduate in 2014, but the difference may be less than the player from 2018 and that of 1981. A four-year starter for the Bobcats in 2014 could have played 143 games, while a four-year starter in 1981 would have played 106 games.

If a Bobcat plays 34 games in 2021-2022 and had started/played in every game since freshman year, they will play 153 games (31 in 17-18, 31 in 18-19, 32 in 19-20, 25 in 20-21 and a proposed 34 in 21-21). So, is a performer who graduated in 2022 more deserving of an asterisk over a 2018 performer than a 2018 performer is over that of a 1981 graduate.

I get ya there, and many records in various forms denote, the 3 year (freshmen couldn't play), or 20 game seasons. But we are talking about an entire extra year that NO one after her or for only a couple years will ever actually receive. Not like your analogy, where everyone who comes later will play that 30 games a year mark. This is a total abiration due to the pandemic.

Agree. This is a temporary and truly bizarre aberration, likely not to be seen again. That is different than just the landscape of the game changing over time.
