I was hoping he was going to show KVK type progress throughout his time at Ohio, seemed more like a finesse big man with a good shot. Good luck to him, but next man up.

We better be. We are now very thin upfront. Doug and Carter (both excellent), and a redshirt freshman BVP (who is more of a small forward) and two true freshmen that have varying degrees if "readiness."

Would love another Mickle.

BVP listed at 6'7", 229lbs. A "Small" forward. I know that might be his true position, but it seemed funny to me.

A small forward in the NBA maybe.

This is a good thing for Groce, Gareri obviously didn’t fit. I hope we can get a 6’7-6’9 pf, 220-240 lbs type that can score from 18 and in, go and get that juco guy that is undersized that dominated in high school and JUCO. I hope we can add another athletic wing guy too. This is a great opportunity for Saul. Go Cats

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Speaking of 'athletic' guys, here's a great thought from Fran Fraschilla regarding being 'athletic' in basketball:

https://twitter.com/franfraschilla/status/989859399618519040

"Absolutely. Basketball athleticism is measured in so many ways. My point is that you don’t have to be in elite athlete to be an elite player.

@JohnGasaway
I’m good with the longstanding all-consuming evaluative idolatry of “athleticism,” so long as it’s paired with a recognition that shooting accuracy is athletic too."

When recruited he was listed as a small forward. On the recruit page he is listed as a power forward. Will be interesting to see the style he plays.

But you can still get to first base if the catcher drops the ball! ;-)

Hybrid 3-4 guy most likely. He'll play both.

But it doesn't hurt. Unless your name is Larry Bird.

So. Is the kid that transferred out the next Larry Bird or what?

**When in doubt, recruit kids that ARE athletic and avoid the scrubs. That's a good rule of thumb. That way the scrub player(s) won't be transferring to Denison or Kenyon after a couple of years occupying a schollie that schools are limited on giving.

13,000 capacity arena in a cool town? Shouldn't have to resort to bringing in scrubs as roster filler.

There are a million great athletes that dominate in high school but can't play the game in a team concept. It's easy to lose a ton of games with guys who can jump out of the gym but don't see the court. Frankly, I don't see how anybody can completely judge what kind of player Gareri might have evolved into here. He obviously didn't have the year he or we wanted him to but I didn't see anything that stuck out that would lead me to believe he couldn't have been successful here. I hope for him he can stay healthy.

Agreed. The sample size wasn't nearly large enough to pass judgement on AJ's abilities on the court.

At the end of the game, the goal is to put the ball through the hoop more than the other guys. Part of that is being able to actually shoot the damn ball. Thankfully, Ohio has several guys that have that skill.

18 posts on this transfer - and I wish AJ well in his future endeavors - but really - more posts than points?

So now we have 3 that have transferred out this year.
What's going on here. Wasn't last year or the year before that a couple of guys also left?
There is a problem here!

Looked lost, timid and unsure in his limited minutes on the court. And he apparently didn't like his nickname. Didn't look MAC caliber at all. Obviously, not a good fit for Ohio or AJ. We wish him well. Time for Saul to bounce back by signing a player that doesn't look lost, timid and unsure. #11Months

Mega revisionist history here. Let's ignore the fact they Gareri was offered by Kent, BG and Toledo. He was not a scrub, and writing off big men after one year isn't always smart. Remember Ethan Jacobs? How much did Antonio Campbell play his Freshman year, or Ivo Baltic?

Maybe he transferred for personal reasons, it happens. Doesn't mean this was a swing and a miss.
