@RealPitino:

"Suggestion to the NCAA, push the start of the season back to January and only play league games. Buy some more time for a vaccine and to get things under control. Although I can’t wait to be back on the sidelines, the health of my players and staff is what’s really important."

My thoughts exactly. Sounds like a recruiting pitch... "I might be a scumbag but I really care about people"

There has been talk in Maryland about pushing the basketball season to next Spring. I doubt it happens because there are too many moving parts and many coaches double up. Would be horrible for potential recruits to miss both the hugely important Junior year AAU season and their Senior HS season.

I have been thinking about the recruiting aspect for awhile... Gonna be more under the radar guys than ever with all of this...

OK, I see that angle, but the larger point I was trying to get at is that it's highly possible based on more than just this tweet, that college hoops starts in January.

So the guy may have been a philanderer, but why can't his concern for his players be genuine?

Yep, could be a real benefit to some mids. I'm going to guess that Prep schools are going to reap some serious benefits the next two years as well.

Maybe he does have genuine concern about his players... I'm not saying he's necessarily a "bad" guy, I just don't trust a word out of his mouth at this point.

Rick Pitino is a guy who would say anything if he thought it would give him an edge in recruiting.

Good point on the prep schools. How many guys did Groce and Saul offer very early who exploded during their Senior years and ended up going high-major... It seems like Boals is a good coach to have right now as he's very well plugged in with Ohio high school coaches.

He is a lot more than just a philander: rape, money laundering, prostitutes for prospects, paying players, etc.

You are already seeing booms to mid majors in football, many are jumping on first offers with all the doubt out there on having seasons and no college days.

I agree 100% that coronavirus is a very serious threat and prioritizing student-athlete health should be the NCAA's 1st (and really only) priority...

I think doing away OOC-play is a good idea, to limit travel/exposure/spread of the virus...

Where I am uneasy is about Pitino's point about pushing back "the start of the season" to January. Granted, if you cancel OOC play that pushes us back to 'about' then, although considering the extraordinary circumstances I don't see why conference play could not be logistically rescheduled... The unfortunate fact of the matter is, his point about a "vaccine" by January is complete lies. There isn't going to be a safe vaccine by January. Period. Any "vaccine" available in January is going to be untested and potentially dangerous for humans. I understand we're in a pandemic and some people may be willing to chance an untested vaccine, but anyone peddling an untested vaccine is nothing more than a snake-oil salesman. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. NCAA players should not be forced to take untested medicine that could cause long-term health issues.

Lose-lose situation...

If we're doing conference-only, starting in January makes sense. It keeps some semblance of normality and it doesn't get in the way of Fall stuff. Unless you wanted to realllly stretch it out, which I doubt anybody does.

I certainly don't want to stretch it out, but at this point it seems like we either stretch it out or roll the dice.

Logistically, delaying CBB from November to January makes sense, but the timeline for clinical vaccine testing just don't add up to that being a meaningful delay. We're risking it in November, we're risking it in January. Pitino is exactly the type of person I would expect to sell a fake cure in two months.

Overall, I think how the NCAA handles CBB is dependent on what happens with football (as usual, unfortunately)

It does limit the number of flights teams will be taking. Much easier to stay in the bubble on your own bus.

There's nothing in Pitino's suggestion about forcing NCAA players to take any vaccine, let alone an unsafe one, or even anything to suggest that he thinks January is some magic timeline where there will be a vaccine.

He just said that pushing back the timeline "buys some time" for a potential vaccine. Which is true. More time is good. Not really sure where you're seeing anything about forced vaccines or have the impression he's peddling one.

You are right, all Pitino said was it "buys some time" for a vaccine which is correct. I'm just following that reasoning to it's logical conclusion.

Any vaccine that is created by January will not have undergone any meaningful long-term studies into it's effectiveness or safety. I'm not criticizing anyone for that, it's just the fact of the matter under the circumstances...

With that in mind, I do not really see any difference between November and January* for when the season starts. In both cases, our best case scenario is an untested, unproven vaccine, which will be significantly less effective unless EVERYONE takes it (which would require forced vaccinations which isn't realistic at all)

*cancelling OOC play makes sense to limit spread via geographic isolation so if Pitino is just talking about that and we forget the vaccine point I agree with him

No OOC plays seems to be the direction CFB is trending, although I would love to see us play Marshall (the closest FBS program to us)

edit: would be really interesting to create an OOC schedule where every program plays the 3 closest schools to them!
