Here's a nifty resource. Coach Boals is 56th in the list. They do mention somewhere that it doesn't include every coach yet.

I would be surprised if he’s in the top 100 when the dust settles. Hardly any private schools listed so far.

Totally agree. They may never get a complete list with the private/non-state funded schools to know where things fall.

For me, it allows me to infer he's probably in the top 15% for non P5 + AAC/Big East schools though. It also shows us that the going rate in the MAC is a little higher than was discussed last year on this board. It also shows Groce as the highest paid coach, and Huger and that Keno Davis and UB's new coach are better paid than maybe I expected.

They guys whose numbers are the most surprising: Whitford and Kowalczk. They're probably underpaid a bit comparatively speaking.

Of note: Miami's coach isn't listed here yet.

Interesting that #3 on the list is a coach with one Sweet Sixteen appearance in 16 years of coaching.

Didn't realize that Steve Hawkins is in the last year of his contact.

I'm a Cronin supporter and UC fan, and I'm stunned by the amount of money UCLA is going to pay him. I think he's a good coach, solid recruiter, and a great motivator, but he's not $5mil a year good.

We all probably remember the dot.com bubble of 2000. Well if college coaches salaries ever take a tumble, we need to look no further than this chart, of mainly public institutions. My goodness as OU Country and OU Van have stated, how in the world is Coach Cronin making that kind of money for the Bruins? Having worked on a project or two out there, I realize the LA cost of living is high, and it is hard living in the shadow of the Wizard of Westwood, let alone navigating the endless traffic, but not 5+ million dollars worth of trouble! College basketball gates and TV ratings are not in college football territory and yet these salaries are something else.

There's the old 1930 Babe Ruth quote about him making more money than President Hoover and the Babe (making $80K) stating that he had a better year than President Hoover (making $75K.) Some of the guys on this list are making 10x, 20x or even 30x more than the sitting governor in their particular states, yet some of them aren't having a better year than their respective governors. Nice work if you can find it!

+1 And, the coaching salary bubble will burst. The only question is when.

This goes hand in hand with the player compensation issue. The coach should not make more than the president, and should be in the ballpark with a dean at most places, including ours. If you make money, that's different, but then the players should be compensated. Bubble is accurate.

This is why the bubble will burst: Making money on a sport in exorbitant amounts at an institution dedicated to higher education. It's not sustainable and it hypocritical to a large degree. The whole system will eventually self-destruct. It may or may not be in the lifetimes of the older members of this board, but I suspect some of our younger members will live to see it.

I find it funny how many coaches have salary bonuses and perks with Nike and other endorsement deals. Yet schools and coaches are stating that they're not ready for players to get endorsement deals. Why do kids buy Nikes? Because Coach K wears them or because players like Kyrie on his team do?

***They're making more than the sitting governor according to what is publicly announced. How many personal, or under the table, deals are said governors getting to influence policy? We'll call those "bonuses". I'm comfortable assuming this is the case for more than one governor in the USA.

You might have a point with Illinois and Louisiana governors, God knows they have seen their fair share of corruption. However, whether you like or don't like your particular governor's policies, most aren't corrupt. I dare say there are more under the table deals made by university top tier administrators than governors.

I would not be surprised at all. I would guess it’s very high. If they’re not I would be surprised. Do you think they’re small?

The problem with private school salary determinations is total lack of transparency. Whatever we know publicly is probably a very small fraction of the true total package. They’re private contractors who can make whatever on the side.

I don't know about their transparency, but Dennison is smaller than some of Ohio's larger high schools and they have an endowment larger than our's, and they are Division III. Supposedly Mike Bray and Brian Kelly at Notre Dame are at the lower end of the salary scale for ACC coaches. I don't know about the Stanford and the Wake Forest's of the world, but isn't Coach Christian's salary at Boston College right around 1 million, which is pretty low compared to the Coach Cronin's of the world?

The only private schools I've checked into are the 8 Ivy league schools. Other than the guy at Harvard, the rest are less than what we pay.

Sorry, I was thinking of Big East schools, Gonzaga. Etc not particularly Ivy League. Anyway , I’m guessing the endorsements and other untraceable payments to be above what is commonly given out.

There is obviously enough money to pay coaches, whether it’s official salary or private booster bucks. The bigger picture on players compensation is the same now as when Walter Byars coined the term student athlete: avoid the cost and red tape of players classified as employees.
