There was a story on WFAN this morning about the G league changing the rules
on foul shots for this season.

Except for the last 2 minutes of regulation and overtime, all fouls will be
one shot.

Depending on the severity of the foul, the shot will be worth 1,2 or 3 points.

SI and ESPN have stories on it.

The theory is it will shave several minutes of a game.

I'd bet G League teams are going to be spending a lot more practice time
on foul shooting.

Hmmmmmmm. So a team could just start slapping the ball out of the offense's hands (not a severe foul) and the offense gets just one shot? I'm not sure that will speed up the game.

Eliminating/reducing time outs would speed up the game. Why do adult basketball players need to stop playing, walk over to the sideline, and be reminded by another adult about what their job is like 8 times in 40-50 minutes?

Somehow Lionel Messi knows what to do for 45 minutes in a row, and then after a short break, another 45 minutes in a row. Michael Jordan needed time outs? (Just something I think about while watching fans try to catch sling shotted burritos during timeouts.....)

I'm on a refs group on Facebook and most of the guys there don't like it. I think it makes sense for things like AAU tournaments and summer leagues where the games are largely inconsequential and you have a tight schedule of games to follow. But in a standalone game that matters, exactly what problem is this fixing?

I think this will lead to players and coaches chucking bad shots and flopping in an effort to get fouled as opposed to trying to finish contested shots. If you don't like James Harden ball, and I do not, this rule is not for you.

Totally agree with this. Reduce the number of time outs and/or adopt a running clock style a la European basketball leagues. Those games are just played at a different pace.

Thoroughly not a fan of this idea. I feel like they're trying to fix a "problem" that isn't all that much of a problem at all. I hope to heck this doesn't find it's way into the college or high school levels.

one shot - worth 2 points
if it is a foul on a made basket - the single foul shot is still worth 1 point (and 1)
if it is a foul that currently warrants 2 shots - the single foul shot is worth 2 points
If it is a foul on a three-point try - the single foul shot is worth 3 points

Its minor league ball - I don't mind it - few fans are concerned about the won/loss record - it is more to see rising players.

G league matters? I don't even know what G league is.

Worth giving it a shot and seeing what happens.

Also, why is it I know so much of what's discussed on New York talk radio?

That would make you the only basketball follower I'm aware of who doesn't know what it is.

By inconsequential, I mean offseason ball.

I think you'd be surprised how many folks who sit in the Convo and attend OU games regularly have never heard of the G league or couldn't tell you what it is.

If you don't know what it is, how do you know the extent to which others know what it is?

My son was just in a tournament that used this. I was skeptical at the beginning but it did keep things moving. By the end of the weekend they had converted me to the believer column. Made every free throw a big one.

I was simply speculating on shab's post about basketball "followers" not knowing what the G league is and that my speculation would be that many "followers' in the Convo stands would not know what it is. Seems like a pretty valid hypothesis when you consider who is sitting in the stands for most OU games.
