It has been nearly a month since Jeff Boals was named our new coach. Any word on potential recruits or remaining coaching openings?

So as of Monday, April 15th here are the scholarship holders:

Ben Vander Plas
Connor Murrell
Jason Preston
Nate Springs
Mason McMurray
Marvin Price (committed, not signed)
Lunden McDay
Jordan Dartis (I've seen no indication he won't be back and him not participating in Senior Day events is a pretty good indicator he will be.)

With the transfers and graduation we have a lot of holes needing to be filled. Getting Price, keeping McDay and a Jordy comeback are a great start. This will be one of the most interesting offseasons in a while.

Roderick makes 9. That leaves us with 4 more schollies to use. Maybe get a couple transfers and save the other 2? Roderick, McDay, Preston, Price and Jordy? Crazy guard lineup with Price being able to go to the 3! Need some bigs or some athletic wings.

This class is already a home run under the circumstances. We need more experience in the post for next year, though. I'm cautiously optimistic that Boals can develop Springs. I'd love to get a space filler grad transfer along with Muszynski as a transfer. Do that, and this first class wouldn't just be a home run, but a walk-off grand slam to win Game 7 of the World Series.

I should have added a time stamp to that original post!

Ben Vander Plas
Connor Murrell
Jason Preston
Nate Springs
Mason McMurray
Marvin Price
Lunden McDay
Jordan Dartis
Ben Roderick

In other words: I don't think we're gonna need any wings for a while.

Springs development will be interesting/crucial to watch. He certainly has the size

I've seen crazier things happen.

I'm not as optimistic, and I'm definitely not The Optimist, when it comes to this project left by Saul.

Agreed....Boals has been a miracle worker so far. We'll see how many miracles he has left with the development of Springs and McMurray. I'm definitely not an optimist on this topic either.

Having not seen Springs play, I have no comment there, other than to say that his length is a big deal if it translates to being a factor defensively. McMurray has shown to be capable at high levels in high school, and was what, second team all state? I think he'll be able to contribute just fine. Time will tell.

While the team as a whole didn’t pan out under Saul, it’s not like he didn’t hit on some players during his time here. Giving up on a young big is laughable. Almost all kids with any size are “projects” at this age... big guy with coordination aren’t secrets to anyone.

Not giving up....just "cautiously optimistic" with Springs and McMurray. We'll know in a year or two if they have a future here in Athens or if they will head to the portal.

Just based off what I saw last year in very limited time (more in warmups than anything), I'm more optimistic on Springs than McMurray. Springs at least has the size and length to alter shots and rebound. McMurray, I just struggled watching him and thinking "What does he do well?" He's not a big physical body, he doesn't seem to be an elite athlete, he didn't shoot the ball that great when I watched him shoot, and generally speaking he looks "stiff" as an athlete to me. I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but I'm more optimistic on Springs.

McMurray just got over foot surgery, he might be the Joey duckworth of basketball.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

My initial thought on McMurray was for him to become Treg Setty lite. Time will tell on that one. Gotta work on the game.

If I am not mistaken, the foot injury occurred in high school. Another recruiting miss if the staff wasn't aware of that.

Played golf with a gentleman yesterday who has been to 55 consecutive state high school baketball tournaments. His comment on Roderick - real deal and will be a four year starter; great outside shot.

Olentangy was severely outclassed personnel wise in the State Tournament. Kids played hard and Roderick just put them on his back. St. V. had NO ONE who could guard him on the perimeter, and demonstrated great strength when needing to get to the hole, used his body well against pressure when getting to the hole and was very good around the hoop with his off-hand.

Can't love this summary of Liberty enough and I know you don't mean any disrespect to the Patriots re: personnel.

Greg Nossaman is an outstanding coach and his teams always have a chance because of the way his players approach the game. Yes, Liberty is one of the largest enrollment schools in the Central District, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they have the same level of basketball talent in terms of size/athleticism when compared to some of the traditional powers. So, to make a deep run you need a Ben Roderick to do exactly what you said. It reminds me of what Greg Avery did at Newark in 2008.

Recruiting kids who know how to lead and how to compete at winning time is a great foundation for any program.

He was previously recruited at Stony Brook, so it makes sense.

In the recruiting forum, there's some info on he, and his walk-on brother.
