Arkley reported he's stepping down to be the commissioner of the Southern Conference.

That is probably a role he is well suited for, maybe even better suited for. Best of luck to Jim Schaus...I personally will look upon his time at Ohio fondly. Hope we can find a great replacement.

I'd have to think commissioner of the So Con is a better job than an AD in the MAC, right?

So what's the blueprint for the ideal replacement?

This is not your father’s Southern Conference. Most of the heavyweights seem to have left to me. Apparently the conference is benefiting from all the exit fees from the 5 departing members.

11 years may be enough for most AD’s so I’m not surprised much by the departure regardless of the feelings about athletics of the new Pres.

When I first read about this,I checked the schools left in the conference.
Not exactly a powerhouse lineup, including,I believe only FCS level football.

A Conference Commissioner is however more prestigious then an A.D.

But I think as, colobobcat66 said, maybe 11 years as A.D. is enough.

Could be he thinks he's accomplished all he can at O.U. and
wants a new challenge.

Nothing but well wishes on the new position.

Schaus's legacy at Ohio has yet to be written. This will be determined by what Coach Boals does over the next 5 years.

Ohio's Ad has had some good fortune in hiring a few mens basketball coaches that have done well, but he has also missed on the last basketball coach and Semeka on the womens side. His track record for the baseball hire has been very average at best even though Smith has won two MAC tourney championships, but not been in the league tourney many other years. Volleyball has been decent, but what have you done lately and the staff is the top paid staff in the MAC. The jury is out on softball but they have performed well lately. He did not hire Frank or the Wrestling coach. Bobcat fans wish him well.

Ummmm....I'm not so sure about that. His last hire isn't going to entirely write his "legacy" - not in this year, or the next five years. I'd say his legacy is largley written.

My take on his legacy is that he will go down as not the worst AD we've ever had, nor the best. IMHO, the best was Bill Rohr, and the worst is a virtual tie between Kirby (Vacuum Cleaner) Hocutt, and Tom (Smartest Man in the Room) Boeh. I know that they have both done well at later stops in their careers, but I'm judging them solely on their jobs at OHIO. I don't, BTW, give TB credit for hiring Frank, that goes almost exclusively to President McDavis.

And remember, part of his legacy are the capital improvements to the Athletic Dept. under his tenure, Walter Fieldhouse, Sook Academic Center, Convo scoreboard, and others I haven't mentioned. Not saying he's solely responsible for those projects but he certainly was involved in fundraising, seeing the projects through, etc.

Early thoughts:

Donor base is tapped (with pledges) out but perhaps administration expects more from Athletics. Does admin plan to pull some funding/support in future?

Never understood his resignation from Men's NCAA Basketball committee with two years to serve. Forced by admin?

Ryan White left but it was for the position at Kansas. Two top guys IMHO

Fundraising has become 110% of the job.

Spartanburg isn't a dream venue.

Not 100% sure but I think those on the basketball committee only serve a couple of years and they recycle. Helps keep the bias away from selection Sunday.

Spartanburg is a growing city and within driving distance to a lot of great vacation spots. Maybe Schaus isn't looking for big city life?

Amen. To me, Jim Schaus has done much to strengthen Ohio athletics and should feel a measure of accomplishment.

I agree. I don't necessarily understand the move, though. Now he has multiple bosses - the president and AD at every conference school.

A gig like SoCon commissioner is retirement on the job. Schaus isn't a kid anymore.

1. You have to be effing kidding me. Ryan White? Who else will stare blankly into the abyss while trying to tap donors for money? Who else can coordinate the most non-740 or 614 phone numbers of which to call me from?

2. It's a GREAT DAY TO BE A FURMAN PALLADIN!!!

3. Schaus did a great job. 12 years ago, if I gave you a list of his accomplishments, every single person on this board would have jumped out of their shoes with excitement. Give him credit.

4. I do find it interesting that the MAC has one of the most storybook opaque TV contracts with ESPN, yet one of our own is heading to be a conference commissioner? Think we'll see Chattanooga vs. Citadel on DAZN?

5. The NCAA Committee never sat well with me. I don't think Schaus made his presence felt, but if that no-talent Nellis made him resign - well, Nellis is a bigger no-talent than I first thought. Nellis. Yutz.

6. Will there still be a reception at the Schaus home? Technically it was included in the donor benefits, so they should stick to it. It doesn't say Schaus has to be employed by Ohio, or even home for the event - but it does have to physically take place at his home. Like a HS rager at an empty home.

7. Anyone think Schaus made the "Safe" hire in Boals knowing what lay ahead for his own future? Would it have been different if McDavis was still in the head chair and Schaus's future was more certain? Pitino? BUELLER?

8. Bob Cooley is requesting his job back. 30 years and no MAC titles is nothing to scoff at.
