With a new coach, players in the "portal" and such. My thoughts are the men's BB team is basically a 'dumpster fire" at this point. Now I know many on this board believe Jeff Boals will lead us to the promised land. I sure hope he does. Question is how long will it take/will we let him try ???

Clearly that while Sauls contract was for 5 years, he’s effect on the program is much greater and according to this poll, upwards of 8 years. Potentially nearly a lost decade of OHIO hoops :(

Give me a break. One big recruit (and a little luck) and we're rolling in no time. Man you guys are such drama queens.

Umm...welll...
This thread was a poll about when we’d be a contender again. The majority voted 3 years. SP was here 5 years and we’ll...
5 (lost years) + 3 (get ourselves out of the ditch) = 8. That’s what this thread is about and that is the current vote. True or False? Either I’m a drama queen, or you’re not a math major. You choose.

I voted for 2020-2021.

While the state of the program is pretty bad right now, a turnaround in basketball can happen pretty quickly compared to say football (which, under the right conditions, can happen quickly, too-see what Fickell did in year two at UC after the mess Tuberville left).

Too many variables are simply unknown at this point, especially what the roster will look like.

I think it is too early to make any judgement call with so many variables for next year alone.

I would not be surprised if we improve on last years record next year, turn it into a winning one.

Immediately! It will take no time to turn this program around.

Well I read it as you were saying that the recovery would be eight years from now. We were a contender two seasons ago. We've had two sub par years. So I misread but in no way does 8 years really apply.

Technically I feel like Schaus owns part of that 8 years. The lame duck year hurt from a recruiting standpoint. That was part of the calculus that went into my vote.

Agreed. We tend to treat college basketball rebuilds like we do pro franchise rebuilds and they're nothing alike. To rebuild a baseball franchise takes scouting, budgets overseas and draft picks that take years. NBA teams need years to clear the books on bad contracts. The NFL, you can turn it around pretty quickly, but it still takes a couple years.

College basketball you just need to recruit a couple guys. And the funniest part is when you're at your lowest at a mid-major, you're the most attractive to a recruit because playing time opens up. It's the maintaining excellence part that seems to be the toughest thing for a mid-major.

A lot is going to depend on this signing period and who Ohio can get late. I'm holding off on voting until then. As DFC said, one big recruit changes the complexion of everything.

If they go get a few Trents and Bassetts they could get back on top faster.

My gut feeling is that people are going to find out very quickly just how much Saul and his staff were under performing at Ohio based on recruiting alone. That is not to say that Boals is the second-coming of anything, he just has more experience evaluating talent on a bigger stage than Saul does. Two or three MAC caliber recruits, and we are back near the top.

Agreed - it's mostly dependent on recruiting, followed by how well they play defense. I know statistically Saul teams played solid D. What Saul teams didn't do was create turnovers often enough to create run-out opportunities to really affect the game with easy baskets.

In terms of recruiting - this year - they need at minimum two additional guys not currently committed, or on the team right now to be added to be immediate starters. In my mind, one has to be capable of being the player who can take over a game when he's hot - probably a 2 or a 3. The other has to be a big to fill that starting center role Boals is referring to in his first presser.

I still think there is some talent here left in the cupboard. The question is, does the talent fit what Boals & staff do, OR are Boals & staff able to adapt what they do to the guys they inherited until they get a class or two of "their guys"? We'll see. At the very least, watching this develop and grow should be fun over the next couple years.

It will depend mostly on putting the ball in the basket while limiting our opponents putting the ball in their basket.

Thanks for the insight. You really have a grasp on the game! ;-)

Basketball can turn quickly based on recruiting. With Michigan having had the Fab 5, OU will need to have the Super 6 to turn things around this year. That said I think years 2 and 3 is where we will be a contender!

In no way am I suggesting we win the MAC next season, so there’s the disclaimer. But look in the East and the talent that has left, and tell me honestly, who scares you? Buffalo lost a ton of seniors and their coach. BG lost Wiggins. Miami lost Adaway, Ringo, and potentially (not likely) Sibande. Akron’s roster is still a revolving door. BG returns the most roster, but we split with them with last years roster. If these young kids gel quickly and prove to be as good as projected, who says we can’t make a little noise next year?

This an interesting line of thinking. From a quick look, based on the returning players, I'm in agreement BG is the team to beat in the East, but UB still has a ton of talent and depth despite losing the five seniors. BG returns all of their guards that were major contributors last year with the major loss being Wiggins. Akron seems to have lost a lot, but also adds a few new faces. I only know about Xerius Williams, who will score a lot in the MAC. Kent lost their two best guards in Walker and Avery, so they have uncertainty as well, similar to Miami.

If I were asked to call MAC East favorites at this time, I'd be sticking with UB an BGSU, and throwing everyone else into a pot that says "TBD" until the recruiting period is over. But I also don't know much about the other schools' incoming recruits.

To your point, I think, the opportunity is there to be a threat in February and March if the new recruits and the remaining players gel together. If a grad transfer and/or a JUCO could be added to be able to step in a contribute immediately, even better. The home run would be to find two grad transfers that fit what the coaching staff wants for this year to allow them to recruit those two remaining scholarships again for next year, creating three open scholarships to work with in the fall recruiting period when the talent pool is deeper with more opportunity.

This might be the youngest Ohio team ever. The lack of experience is off the charts. Dartis health is a question too. He might not be the same player he once was. He missed all of last year. This upcoming season will be ugly. We probably finish last in the MAC with the youth and likely under ten wins for the entire season. In a couple years we claw our way back then maybe be special 3-4 years from now where we got lots of players that played lots of games together and grew into a great team. This is like the movie we are Marshall. We lost the entire starting five off a 11th place team in the MAC. We go from bad to worse in the short run. If we found some gems in the recruiting class we could be a contender in three years. This is unchartered territory for this program. A total rebuild. We will be among the youngest teams in the country and this isn't Duke or Kentucky where the freshmen are McDonald's all-americans. These are 4 years guys that are raw and need time to grow at the college level. My guess is we win 5 to 7 games with about 25-27 losses. Its going to be a bloodbath, but three years from now they will be back in the upper half of the MAC. In four years they are what Buffalo was the last couple years a team loaded with upperclassmen with 4 years of playing together in the same rotation and system.

If we ONLY returned Dartis (they say he's 100 percent cleared so let's say he's at 50 percent of himself which is still a good MAC player), Murrell, Preston and BVP we would already have four experienced players with three guys with starting experience.

NOW...let's throw in two guards in McDay and Roderick who were among the best guards in the state AND Price who was one of the best wings in Maryland. Don't forget that McMurray was getting minutes before his injury last year. I'm not saying we will win the MAC or even be top 4 but .500 or a little better is not out of the question. We've seen MAC teams get a couple of good guards and turn their fortunes around. And also don't forget that Boals is going to be an in-game upgrade as a coach.

Ditto on the idea that we are two MAC level impact players away from making some noise. I like the fact too that our new coach played for an intense Old School coach/Ohio Bobcat legend like Larry Hunter, played alongside a monster of an NBA player like Gary Trent, and had experience as an assistant coach at Ohio State. I believe that Mr. Boals understands what the State of Ohio has to offer in terms of talent and what it is going to take to compete game after game in the MAC.

This one was pretty young and a joy to watch.
