Saw an article about high schools looking into forming E sports teams.

It said in the article that some colleges are offering scholarships to "gamers".

As far as I know,E-Sports aren't recognized by the NCAA,so they wouldn't be athletic scholarships.
So I wonder where they come from?

Akron is either on the cutting edge of something really innovative or desperately flailing as their enrollment plummets. I guess it could be both.

some of you will not like this, but eSports is being adopted by the NFHS, and is starting to gain traction as a High School sanctioned events. Will possibly be in Ohio in the next 5 years.

I'm pretty sure I saw a mention of an eSports program in a recent Board of Trustees meeting summary. Embarrassing, I agree.

I know I'm a dinosaur,and e-sports are popular.

But, from an "athletic" perspective, especially looking at some of the participants on ESPN,I think of this as being in the same category as chess.

I get that eSports is a real thing, and even that it's an actual job. Maybe kids will flock to Akron to be part of eSports teams. What do I know? It just seems stupid for a university to pour a lot of resources into because to excel you certainly don't need to drop $20,000+ a year on tuition. You just need to play A LOT and have extremely fast reflexes. So fast that the "retirement" age for pros averages 25.

Agree - this is a perfect analogy for me.

. . . and bowling? Another activity that can lead to a college scholarship.

Which reminds me of a note in our local newspaper, The Newark Advocate, from last summer, announcing dates for conditioning for anyone planning on trying out for the high school bowling team. Had me thinking what kind of conditioning this might involve.

Miami is the top rated Ohio school for eSports, Ashland, Akron, Kent, OSU, Marietta, and SSU all have teams. SSU has a highly rated video game design school.

BTC, which of those schools looks to have the better recruiting class this year? Any website you know of that provides a comprehensive list of athletes looking to transfer after this year?

Oh, but there are websites on the recruiting. As stated, as this picks up steam with NFHS I’ve paid more attention. Will be OHSAA sport in 5 years is my guess

Tiffin University has the country's largest esports "arena" in the nation, or at least it was a year ago when it opened: https://www.tiffin.edu/news/tu-celebrates-largest-epsorts...

My wife has taught students who are part of the team (and they do receive scholarships for participating though I think it's a pretty small chunk of what it costs to go there). She teaches international students, who are a pretty big part of the team because esports actually has probably more popularity in other countries than in the U.S.
