The PAC-12 has finalized the first part of their multi-step television deal, partnering with CBS through 2031. CBS will be the anchor platform, but the league is expected to have a full media rights package which also includes The CW and either ESPN or Turner. Schools are expected to received between $8M-$15M per year, depending on who you ask.

The league still needs to finalize their 8th football school to be considered a full-time conference. Talks with UNLV have soured and Texas State is now considered to be the favorite, which would leave an open spot in the Sun Belt Conference. Louisiana Tech and WKU from C-USA are being considered targets for the SBC. I personally would also keep an eye out for East Carolina from the AAC.

There will be a sense or urgency to sign Texas State, as their exit fee from the Sun Belt doubles on July 1st.

Both UNLV and Memphis have both recently expressed their desire to be Big 12 members, though neither has been formally invited.

So are we back to calling them power 5 conferences? Or is this new one not powerful enough?

The current 7 (plus Gonzaga) are actually a sensical and logical group resembling a real conference with geographical efficiencies and rivalries.

Fun fact, all 7 signed on members end in the word state.

Unfortunately no, they have they lost their "power" status as it applies to the College Football Playoff. However, the league itself (PAC 12) is named in the lawsuit as it pertains to the NCAA and House settlement. This is a lot of the reason that the remains of the league (Washington St and Oregon St) fought so hard for the money from bowl payouts and tournament shares owed to the conference. The 10 departing members were not only leaving the conference for dead but essentially left WSU and OSU to foot the bill.

I think they have to earn the "power" moniker. At he moment, AAC is ahead of them. At best, they're upper G5/6.

With Boise St. and San Diego State they will be borderline "power" but (no offense to) Texas State...that won't impress the sports world. If they get Memphis, that might help. They have had some really good seasons even while living in the geographic shadow of Ole Miss and Arkansas.

Texas State was the last resort, but not completely without benefits.

-Conference gets a footprint in Texas for recruiting, which is something both Colorado State and Boise State desperately wanted.

-San Marcos sits right between Austin and San Antonio, both Top 10 in US Population at the moment. If you haven't driven down I-35 in Texas lately, Austin and San Antonio are on the verge of their own metroplex that rivals Dallas/Ft. Worth. It's almost one giant suburb at this point.

-Texas State could possibly take a lesser share for the first couple of years just to get in the league, which would make others already in the league happy.

They've thrown multiple offers at Memphis and the travel just simply doesn't work. A basketball conference with Gonzaga, Memphis and SDSU would be awesome though.

That oil money in Texas is crazy.

Texas State has gone from an FCS school to (potentially) a P5 in about a decade.

They were D2 not too long ago.

Everyone is looking at the media deals but where your revenues rank in relation to your conference is the biggest indicator of success. In the MAC Ohio I believe has some of the best marketing and ticket revenue. But the SBC has bigger ticket revenue programs like Marshall and Applachian State and in there the university would be mid-tier revenue wise. Another example is the AAC where Memphis, Tulane and ECU are far ahead in media/ticket revenue compared with Rice, FAU, UNT etc. Being a big fish in a small pond has its advantages.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

Just think their basketball program gets upgraded a little bit with the PAC-12 logo. And some of those Texas kids may stay close to home. A lot of positives for the other Bobcats. Maybe we will get a call one day from AAC or dream scenario, ACC.

I'm happy for Texas State fans, or as I like to call them, our "Bobcat Cousins in Texas."

The PAC made the right call with this invite. They needed an 8th full member, and planting their flag anywhere in Texas is wise. There's no point in waiting around and hoping AAC schools like Memphis, Tulane, etc. will change their minds and join.
