There's an article in our local paper that to "move up" the timing of
CFP and avoid conflicts with conference championships, there's a push to move the Army/Navy game back to where it was pre 2009 Thanksgiving weekend.

This is obvious unless Army and Navy give up the right to play in the playoff.

Army and Navy will get a big payday for that change. They got to negotiate a tv deal when they're the only game on. Giving that up will be costly.

I don't know what the current TV contract is but I doubt that it is indefinite. If they move the start of the playoff up as it seems like is likely in the next few years given the rumors as to what the B10 abd SEC want, then when they renew the contract they wouldn't be able to negotiate the renewal as the only game on or play on that weekend if they want to be able to have a chance for the playoff. It seems like it would be costly for Army and Navy and what entity is obligated to compensate them? This is another scheduling thing some people will complain about but it also is another one of those things that there probably isn't a realistic workaround.

The current contract runs through 2038. The President also floated the idea of an executive action to ensure that the game remains "exclusive" -- so it's not like Army & Navy don't have some leverage here.

The deal for that single game is worth more to them than the MAC's TV deal is to any MAC team for the whole season. They aren't going to give it up without getting something in return, and they'll angle for a larger revenue share from the playoff as a result.

Well if it becomes an Executive Order, then everything else is a moot point.

Maybe they'll play it on a weekday night when no other schools are playing toward the end of the season. Wouldn't that be possible?
