A father of an Ohio player (forget the name) told me today at the game that Frank Solich has an open challenge to any Bobcat football player to a sit-up competition.

They should just drop the push-ups routine rather than giving our competition reasons to laugh at us.

Hopefully they will get better with all the practice our "O" is giving them.

Yes, this is bad, but the dance team's kickline is worse.

Worse is when nobody knew we had a D1 football program.

Even when I got to Athens in 2003, a lot of people I talked to in casual conversation thought we were I-AA football.

When there was a Bobcat Club Challenge during Ohio Football season I made several pledges to donte. One of my pledges was a dollar for highest number of push-ups the cheerleaders would do in a game during the year. This came about because my daughter was a cheerleader and we enjoyed watching their regular practice of doing push-ups (with additional weights added) pay off. If I remember correctly the most our daughter did in one game was around 275. She said the last 55 were hard but they would have gladly done another 62. (Or whatever the actual number was).

Both the boys and girls did the push-ups because there was thus team up north-west that only had the guys doing push-ups at that time. Practice and expectations for certain standards and abilities were established. Defending the athleticism and hard work of my daughter and her crew wasn't necessary because it was obvious.

Its the small market perception thing. Draw a triangle from Mill St to Court St to Peden and Athens seems small. The population within a 7-8 mile radius is 50,000 though makes it more of a small city. Peden's dominance in the 20's and 30's made OU a leader in the conversation to creating the MAC which has over time developed into a solid FBS conference. Basketball tradition led to the construction of the Convo. We've earned our elevated place in the food chain.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

Oh man...That is cringeworthy. I can't decide who is worse, the girls who aren't even trying to deceive people, or the guys who are just bobbing their head up and down and not moving their arms at all.

New rule for the rest of the season: After the Cats score 14 points, they'll switch to jumping jacks.

Best part of that series of tweets:

"...need to work on pushups IF THEY ARE GOING TO SCHEDULE KANSAS". Ouch.

I had a Jayhawk friend with me in attendance. He said the best cheer/chant they had when he was in school was "Only X days until basketball season".

Dang...332 is a lot of push ups. Looks like the last 52 and then 59 were about 15 minutes apart. On top of stunting off the field and mounting. Maybe we should cut them some slack.

It actually can be pretty demanding, but they really have no off-season and should be in shape enough to handle it.

I suggest they do tryouts for individuals who can do real push-ups and have them do them instead of the cheerleaders. It is pretty obvious that they can't do that many nor could any of the posters in here. Okay, there may be one or two who could. It's hard to do, but do it right or drop it, because as it is, it's pretty much a joke.

Maybe allow local/regional cross-fit gyms to bid for the opportunity

Any idea when this "tradition" started? I can't see girls doing up to 60 push-ups at a time in the 40 seconds or whatever they get. That's not a knock on girls, they just don't have the upper body strength to do that many push-ups that frequently. Of course there are the exceptions, but probably 97% of girls and about 80% of guys can't pump out 60 push-ups in that short amount of time.

Former cheerleader here (04-07) and from my understanding it started back in the 90's.

I lead the pushups my last two years and the one thing I will say about it is not only do you sometimes end up doing a lot (along with all the stunting, basket tossing and whatever else on the sidelines) but you also have limited time to do them (somewhere around 45 seconds when you factor in the running from the sidelines and tumbling back as well). This isn't a big deal when you're doing 14 or 21, but when you get into the 40's and 50's - it can be rushed to say the least.

My roommate was a cheerleader during The Dark Days of the Brian Knorr Era. I remember one Saturday morning, 7AM or so, he walked into our living room, got on the floor, and counted out "one-two-three" push-ups.

"Yep. That ought to be enough." And if memory serves me, he was right.

How far we've come....

How about getting the ROTC guys to do the pushups instead of the cheerleaders?
