I was tagged in a post on Facebook by a friend because they knew I am a Bobcat fan and was at the big win on Tuesday:

"I have to say I am very disappointed in the Miami RedHawks Football organization. The hard working staff at Papa Johns in Athens made and delivered 100 pizzas for the team. Unfortunately they chose Not to tip the delivery guy on a $700 order. Please remember that this is how people support themselves and help pay their way through college. I couldn’t be more disappointed in the total lack of respect shown towards hard working students. Please remember in the future to tip your drivers especially on an order this large! From a very disappointed parent!"

For a school that acts like they are the rich, prep school, public ivy of Ohio they really do show their class.

SAD!

Before anyone gets bent out of shape over a FB post, the tip may have already been calculated into the negotiated price and the local store may not have credited/given the tip to the driver. You can do that with at least one pizza place here in town when you order online.

There was a picture of the bill - the fine print indicated that the delivery fee was included into the total but that was not to be considered a tip.

You tip your driver. Period.

I understand the love for Casa from most, but at their prices, and considering the employee ownership and modest portions, the no tipping policy makes sense. Having lived in Denver for a number of years (with literally hundreds if not thousands of quality Mexican restaurants from which to choose), Casa's pricing is INSANE relative to the quality. But if you are the only pony in a one horse town, you can get away with those prices.

CASA is good but expensive. I enjoy their salsas.

Had to tip for years until the tax folks realized they were breaking the law with their pooling practices.

Papa John's is lucky that they got the business after lying on the NFL protest.

Yeah the franchise owner in Athens is responsible for that.

I am sure they probably thought that the gratuity was included.

I've had nothing but disdain for Papa John since he told his workers he would have to fire some if Obamacare passed a few years ago. He's an arse.

As for Fiami not tipping, they suck.

You're a bit off base I'm afraid. Just dined at Casa. Two of us - total bill was $78.70. Two entrees with enough left over for lunch tomorrow, two salads, a shared appetizer and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. That's pretty darn cheap in my book. Portions are huge especially if you get a number 1 or 4. As for quality, I'll put their consistency of quality up against any other restaurant in town.

Your mistake is considering Casa to be Mexican food. It's vaguely Mexican inspired locally sourced hippy-ish food. There's a difference! I happen to like the place and have no issue with the price/value/quality equation, but I do think that most people who don't care for it are expecting actual Mexican food when they go there. It's not, for better or worse.

Bingo! It has "Mexican food" labels/names but the food is far from Mexican. It is very popular. My guess is that they did between 250 and 300 covers in the restaurant last night and half to two thirds that in the Bodega. When we left at 8, the wait was still over an hour and every table was full.

Many years ago I was connected to a large restaurant in Athens (Damons) and we had two food equipment salesmen in from Austin, Texas. Brought them to dinner at Casa and when the food was served, they were a bit shocked to see what was in the menu was not what was on the plate, ie. "it said quesadilla, but this is not what we call a quesadilla in Austin (or something to that effect). They enjoyed the dinner but both said it was unlike any 'Mexican' place they had been to. I told them that my take was Hippie Southwestern USA with Mexican Undertones. They both told me they would be going back to Texas and telling everyone in their company about the very interesting restaurant they had visited.

I worked for 13 years in East Los Angeles. Casa is not Mexican. Trust me. It is not even close to food that you would find in Mexico, let alone El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, or any other Central American country. You might as well call Taco Bell Mexican food. There is also a big difference between "Mexican" food that is served in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. For God's Sake, New Mexico puts green chili in virtually everything, except if you ask specifically for just red. (For those who like both, "Christmas" is the word.) Casa is merely a well-intended "hippie-poser" hang out that knows about as much about Mexican food as a majority of those living in Russia. Also, please do not confuse Mexican food with the wonderful cuisine of Brazil, Cuba, and Argentina.

As for Miami not tipping: "Surprised?!?!" Just one more good reason to hate Miami. No wonder they lost, Pizza isn't exactly the most healthy food for athletes.

I really enjoy Gran Ranchero on East State Street. Some of the better Mexican Food that I've had in Ohio.

I've seen crazier things happen.

So there is no confusion, I thought it appropriate to provide this link.

What confuses me is the apparent hatred/disdain for Casa by more than a few posters on this board. I just don't get it.

I don't hate it, but I don't like it. I'd say the service is poor, the food mediocre, and all of it is not worth the wait. My daughters love it. My son and wife tolerate it. It's basically a hippie cult kind of place. Since I'm neither a cultist nor a hippie, I avoid it as much as possible.

To be fair to Casa, you could argue that they themselves don't claim to be "Mexican" food. "Mexican-inspired" or "Mexican-style" seems to be the nomenclature.

It would be pretty boring if every Mexican restaurant was the same. I've always had great experiences at Casa and look fwd to getting back there during hoops season.

Been to Casa maybe 3 times and it's been at least 10 years since my last visit. Service was really, really bad on each occasion and food nothing that great that would warrant the wait. Since I don't live in Athens I have other priorities when I return, so I can confidently say I'd never go back.
