What's happened to the 110 this year? They look like the BGSU marching band out there.

Gotta agree, not the best half time show I have seen! At least more folks stayed after the show though.

Blandest Fans in the Land too. Nobody makes any noise on 3rd or 4th downs defensively, but every single person springs to their feet and screams as soon as the 110 takes the field. It's pretty embarrassing.

If you were commenting about the play on the field you would probably give us some specifics. Do the same for your 110 analysis--give us your reason for the lack of "WOW" that you seem to have observed was missing--play by play, please.

The music, the sound, the marching the lack of clean lines? Lay it on us...

Totally agree. I was thinking the same thing while I was watching today. I think the 110 is great but lately I've noticed that they don't look or sound as good as they used to and I wonder if the band leadership has become complacent doing the same thing year after year. It's a bit predictable at this point. One of the things that the 110 has always been known for is it's hard, driving, fast tempo marching style. The current band is none of those - the tempo is actually really slow. Even the classics are played at a slower tempo than in the past. It makes it kinda boring but they're still better than a lot of college bands.

PS - Purdue's band was much more exciting in the stands and on the field last week.

Got to agree with SBH. I actually made that comment when I got home this afternoon. The third song that they played was outstanding. Other than that, just a bunch of people standing around and playing before another set finishing dance routine.

And I have to agree with 695. The whole experience right now is bland. Tailgate in tailgate park and you have to walk through a maze to get to the game. Sit in section 104 or 105 and when you walk up the aisle you need to ask people what row they're in because the numbers of the rows have warn off. The new sound system is out of phase with one side being a tad bit behind the other. And the promotions - we kick a field goal right off the bat and before the band can finish playing we go into a promo on the board totally sucking the enthusiasm out of the air. We score a first quarter touchdown and the same thing happens. And did I say anything about the girl on the mike? Yikes!

The highlight of the day was Lou calling the grassy area near Walter Hall Punch Card Park!

Good win against a horrible team. The passing game was fun to watch.

The 110 has had several extremely popular halftime selections over the years, but unfortunately after one season they get mothballed and each year brings something brand new. While it's OK to try something new each year, I would like to see the most popular selections re-played each year, too. Other schools do it. Their most popular band selections become a part of their school's traditions, and alumni and friends look forward to enjoying them time and time again. A long time ago the 110 performed a halftime routine to Long Train Runnin' that was just about perfect. And in recent years, we have had both Party Rock Anthem and Gangman Style which were enormously popular. Yet it looks like we won't see these performed on the field ever again. But it's the traditional things that get people excited, not exclusively playing something new again and again.

I've only been watching them for a couple years, but I will rank that performance last. The 110 blew me away the first time I saw them. And I normally found marching bands boring.

Since the band has historically used current rock tunes, there is that challenge of producing a show with current tunes that can be arranged for a marching band that the crowd can easily recognize.

There are also stringent copy-write laws that limit the usage of a tune, Party Rock Anthem comes to mind. If the 110 only regurgitates the favorites then there would have been no room for jumping on these new tunes that led to so much Youtube attention--going viral.

If Frank can have a "Texas State" moment or three, then chill when the 110 goes 50 years and has an outlier half-time--just call it the classic trap performance.

What seems to be going on in Athens? The hoop games last year were featuring the n-O Zone, folks were telling me to keep my voice down at the Fall Football Games and now this?

Never thought I would see a 110 comment even close to this one. I didn't make it down yesterday so I can't say I have first hand knowledge but - WOW.

I would encourage you to stay for the postgame show, if you're looking for classics. The band does the same set of songs after every game--what we call the "standards". Long Train Runnin' is included in that show. Those songs also get played throughout the game as time allows. As we all know, promos can take away valuable time.

I don't mean this the wrong way, but you will never Party Rock or Gangnam Style performed again anytime soon. It's just the way the leadership prefers to write their shows. Some charts get replayed every 5-7 years, depending on what kind of show they want to write.

The band has built it's reputation on playing new music mixed with classics. That IS the tradition of the 110. That will not likely change, as it's proven to be what the majority of fans like (majority, not all), and it helps recruit kids to come to OU to be in the band. You'd be surprised to see just how many high school programs emulate the 110 and utilize 110 students on their band camp staffs each year. It's far more than the bands that show up for band day.

Just some food for thought.

I thought the show was great, as always.
There are a lot of grouchy old townies here that rip anything they can.
They buy tickets and go to games and support the programs but they don't ever miss an opportunity to take a shot at the present athletic department leadership.

My biggest complaint is I don't know any of the songs they play at halftime, but that's my fault for getting old, not the 110's.

I've been following the 110 since they were 110 Marching Men of Ohio.
I also follow Drum Corps.

I've seen both of the 110's shows on line.

Their drill is "crisp", to say the least.
They are also quite proficient musically.

The problem is that for the most part, today's "popular" music doesn't always work with the 110's style, including a "wow" factor.

That was evident with yesterday's selections from Bruno Mars.

I agree that the 110 shouldn't become a "greatest hits" band.

But,since this is their 50th Anniversary,I was hoping that they'd bring some of those greatest hits out of storage.

Well, there are still more shows to come, including homecoming.

I hear ya, today's music for the most part doesn't fit well. I'd like to see a little more rock influence than pop.

But, the band does have three weeks to prepare the homecoming show, so I expect they will blow the doors off the place.

If it makes you happy - this local will comment on one more thing. I honestly believe that the $40 and $45 ticket price yesterday had an effect on the crowd size. Parents weekend, military day and we only get 22K. While I was talking with a friend near the ticket office right before the game, a man and woman and their two elementary age boys walked up to the ticket window (no line by the way) and stared at the prices in disbelief. $160 for the four of them. Two townie women each gave them one ticket. We really could use a youth priced ticket. Toledo for one has them.

Agree that some were put off by ticket price.
But 22k (+- actual paid) x 40$/45$ is a good gate financially.

It was a gorgeous day in Athens and some could have opted for other activities.
it was kind of hot 12-3pm in Peden.
Game was on local cable tv too.

Without townies athletic program wouldn't exist period.

We don't offer youth ticket prices? That is really a shame.

...

Multiplying that out gives you $900,000, which is far too high because a lot of tickets were a part of the Family package (which is what that family of 4 at the ticket window should have bought). Also, a lot of the reported attendance was students. Still, we can hope that Ohio netted $400k from this game.

That's the kind of numbers where Ohio can afford to bring in P5 teams more often. If Ohio plays a money game for $800k on the road, and then turns around and buys an FCS game for $400k to get the extra home game back, they net $400k for the two, plus perhaps $200k for the gate on the FCS game. If they replace that with a home:home deal with a P5, they are a little worse off, but not a huge amount. That's IF they can find a P5 willing to do a home:home, of course.

OhioStunter wrote:

As I mentioned above, don't forget the Family pack. That's 4 season tickets for one low price, and it may be the best deal in the country.

Problem is the average price for the 22,000 is probably a lot closer to $15 each rather than $40. Students "free", family packs and season tickets can average more than &15 could they?

Family pack averages $5.42 per ticket per game. My season tickets on the 50 average $13.33 per game. My guess on ticket prices alone, we barely break even on a game. The revenue comes from parking, concessions, promotions and what we get from TV.

Even more importance then for improving concessions since it can be significant for the bottom line.

Agreed and that's why youth ticket prices would be a very good thing to have when you consider Athens and the counties that border it. Some would say well those folks should just buy the family plan for $130. Even if that family of four only came to one game, the cost would be more than $130 when you consider parking and the fact that you're probably going to feed the kids. That is not a complaint just an observation and a suggestion. Remember the folks on this board are about as far removed from those who live in SE Ohio as OCF and I are from executing a perfect alley-oop dunk.

Hopefully the 110 has something special planned for the Macy's Parade.

Just saw the OSU's band will be playing in it next year.
