This is my first posting to the Bobcat Attack message board. OU 1970 Grad. In the spring of 1970, college students were actively protesting the Viet Nam war. A terrible tragedy had taken place at Kent State which I personally believe was the the responsibility of the Ohio National Guard. {A new series on the war by Ken Burns is currently being aired on PBS}. Ohio shut down its campus and classes were suspended for the quarter {I understand that OU has recently returned to the semester system}.There were no final exams and seniors in good academic standing were awarded their degrees.

I joined the military, received an honorable discharge, married a Canadian girl and moved to Canada.

I lost contact with OU for many years. However, I regained interest when the Bobcats beat North Carolina and earned a birth in the Sweet Sixteen. I have been following Bobcat sports from a distance since that exciting basketball season.

As an initial contribution, I would like to share two pieces of 'news' with you {I have not seen these items posted}. First, freshman Isiah Cox, a wide receiver, is now listed on the football roster. Also, the December 7th basketball game against Maryland is being televised on the Big Ten Network.

ESPN 3 is not available in Canada and few televised Bobcat games are available on alternative specialty sports stations. Perhaps a reader might be willing to share their ESPN 3 service with me. I would be pleased to contribute to the cost.

Welcome aboard, Old Guy. Be apprised that when you were a freshman, I was a senior. That means that, certifiably, I'm an old guy. And by the time you graduated I'd returned from soldiering in Korea.

Yes, welcome, and I'm even older than you and Doc. I graduated in 1968, but should have graduated in 1966. I had a two year hiatus to my studies while on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1966. We need more old guys on this board. BTW, Coach Solich is a few months older than I am. Old guys rule here!

My granddaughters call me the old man, so I thought I'd enter this contest. After serving on a destroyer in US Navy for two years I entered Ohio University in 1959 and graduated in 1963.
I roomed with two football players my first semester. They were not happy! Another Navy Vet
lived across the hall and rented a room in private housing the next semester.

The Bobcats were among the top teams in the MAC in football, basketball and baseball during those years. I have been a fan ever since.

While I have never posted before, I have enjoyed reading the posts for many years.

Go Bobcats!!!

Agree. The truthful words about the experience spoken by the warriors on both sides of the war is poetic and heartbreaking. Those written and recorded during the war, and, the interviews with those reflecting back. The interviews with the political leaders and experts of the time cast light on the complexity of the relationships which let the simplicity of what was really going on in Vietnam be obscured, obfuscated and ignored. The soundtrack is riveting.

I have many thoughts on the experience growing up with family members who served and around many others whose fathers and brothers did; as well as many others in the communities in which I lived who didn't. This might make an interesting thread in the general topics area.

Don't think that would be possible today.

Ummmmm. Afghanistan has been going on for even longer with no end in sight, and I doubt we will ever know even half of the ugly details from the ground there.

Re your comment: "Don't think that would be possible today." Ask yourself this: If on June 6, 1944 TV cameras would have been filming on Omaha Beach, would FDR and the American Public been willing to continue the invasion that led to liberation of Western Europe?

I've had that conversation with a number of my friends.

From what I've read about him,I don't think FDR would have had any reservations about continuing the invasion after "D-Day".

I also don't know about the American Public,at that time.

Today,there is no question the media and the public would be screaming that we can't win.

Not quite the same.
Right now we may not have all the "ugly details" ,as you call them,on Afghanistan.

I think that's the same with any war.
Its amazing what years,even decades later,has come out about WW 1,WW 2 and Korea.

I grew up during the Vietnam War. I've also read a number of books on it.
I never read about the U.S. paying up to 80% of France's costs to keep fighting.
I also never read about just how early we had "advisers" involved in combat, including air strikes/support and how many "advisers" got killed.

What I find really disturbing are the recordings of President Johnson and his advisers that show to just what extent they went to keep everything a secret.

I just don't think you could have that kind of coordinated secrecy today.

Based on what's been reported about fees Bill got from the Russians for speeches, I guess it comes down to what the meaning of collusion is. :/

Another old guy here...have been on BA for a long time and occasionally post, but I guess I've been quiet for a while. Nonetheless I do enjoy following the threads here.

I graduated in '67 just as the war protests were gaining steam, joined the Air Force through ROTC, and served until July '74, mostly in scientific and technical roles. Never served in a combat role, unless you consider missile launch officer as such. I did crawl around in some radioactive tunnels in Nevada though.
