Yes, I know he's of the evil empire, but I love this perspective: http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/20616982/...

It's quite offensive to the current players when new coaches seem as though they can't wait until they're gone and can install new players. I think fans fall into the trap of suggesting that we should wait until a coach has 'his players' until we make a judgment call. High school coaches work with what they are given often, developing the players to work within their system or adjusting their system to fit the player profile.

Interesting to have Meyer call out former assistants, but I think he's 100% right here.

I thought it was a great take, as well. Kinda shocked he didn't give Herman a call to deliver this instead of in public, but it might've been off the cuff or maybe they don't talk a whole lot anymore.

I'm not really surprised he didn't call Hermann. As a former assistant to Urban Meyer, he already knows what the Buckeyes coach thinks about that situation. I agree you have to work with what you have and to blame the prior coaches lack of recruiting just alienates the current players who are still there to do their best and play for whoever the coach is.

However, I disagree that you should just ignore the "his players" argument as a measure of a coach. Not as an excuse for disappointing play, but as a measure of how good a recruiter the coach is. If he improves the overall talent and record, then recruiting is an asset for him and is measure of a good coach.

Good coaches, who can also recruit well, should be able to improve the talent level no matter which conference they are in. I wonder if Tommy Tuberville's lack of recruiting acumen had anything to do with the back-sliding of the Bearcat football program. It's easy to recruit for big name SEC and Big 12 teams, a little tougher when it's a G5 trying to find it's way back to the P5. I think this makes what Coach Solich has done at Ohio even more impressive. Not only did he find a way to get talent to a MAC school, he's done it at one of the perennial basement dwellers before his arrival. Aside from TT, he's won with good, but not great QB play. Is Ohio finally reaching the point where we could see a star QB? (again)

I hate OSU, but I respect the hell out of Meyer's coaching ability and his take on this.

He ran a bunch of guys off the squad after he took over at OSU that "weren't his players". He is a hypocrite. Remember that Vietnamese place? Pho Kim.

+1 He should go into politics if he gets sick of coaching.

Running off and throwing under a bus are two different things.

Yep. I'd have to know the circumstances of why those players didn't make it under Meyer to judge whether he's being hypocritical here.

Herman's comments ("this team") sounded as if he was throwing his players under the bus for giving up half a hundred. Would've been better to say "this program." Texas football has pretty much been a shambles for several years. Maryland scored 30 pts in the first half, which sounds like a prep issue as much as an execution issue.
