Good: The receivers looked good, they ran good routes and were abe to get separation in the second half. The offensive line was good in pass protection. Also, Nathan Rourke looked good. He looked like a difference maker as did Chad Moore and Evan Crouch on defense.
Bad: The play calling in the first half was so predictable and somewhat cautious. The Purdue Db's were able to sit on routes, they even got away with a pass interfence on a five yard hook to Cope, you shouldn't be able to sit on somebody with that speed. The offensive line got pushed back on running plays. Our running backs were stifled. AJ looked indecisive at times, probably due to the blocking. AJ fumbled for the second time in his career. Dorian Brown also put the ball on the ground and FS went with the freshman for most of the second half to send a message. The Purdue tight ends ran free all night, ours were invisible. I heard some possible what if scenario's that were far from plausible. If Purdue did not drop 4 passes and put in their second team, they could have possibly scored 59 on us.
The ugly: The tackling was awful, the senior d-line got dominated. One player looked like he was trying not to get injured, this person did not sell out on tackles. This person blew 3 or 4 coverages and set a bad example for others. We are known for our physical brand of football and we looked awfully soft. The poster that said why does Burrow never get called out was right. His unit has loaded up on sorry teams, but any team that can pass, kills us. We have to defend the pass better.
Going forward: We need to watch a lot of video. The coaches need to determine what our brand is and what they want to see from their players and hold the players accountable. Certain people need to be running on Monday or sat down for a quarter. You can't let people get away with poor execution and a lack of effort. I don't care who they are. I know this post may hurt some peoples feelings, this is my perspective and I am not going to sugarcoat it. FS is a good coach, he should not have to tell the O-coordinator to throw the ball down the field when it is painfully obvious. I am still all in. Go Cats.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

I'm not in dissagrement with the above analysis, but I guess I have a slightly different take.

As far as play calling is concerned, I harken back to Marty Schottenheimer who once famously noted, "Play calling is overrated." He certainly took a lot of heat for that comment, but there was a vein of truth in that statement.

I understand why a lot of teams run the spread offense, but it creates limitations in the run game. You pretty much have to have all the stars allign to run the ball with consistency in that offense. You can't dictate and control the ball on the ground like you can with a fullback and a TE. Likewise, its hard to play action pass out of the spread. So as long as they're in the spread, we're going to see what appear to be bad play calls that actually fail because of the scheme or the execution level of the players on the field.

Having said that, their are good things about the spread if you have the talent to run it properly. I've never felt OU has had the elite skill players to put the kind of pressure on defenses that the spread can create. Perhaps Rourke can elevate the play from the QB position and make White and Cope threats on the outside. But I still think the overall talent is lacking. Time will tell.

One last point. Obviously the O line and D lines struggled. Having a modified run package with a TE for the offense might have helped slow down the Purdue D. On defense. I'm not sure why we left the center uncovered after they ran it up the middle and down our throat in the first half. The DE's were spread really wide and the scheme seemed to create nautral running lanes that Purdue took advantage of.

Despite this horrible loss I'm still pulling for my Bobcats and hope they can right the ship. Heck, I had to watch the Browns go 1-15 last year. if you want to see really bad football come to the CLE.

We all know it takes time to establish the running game. A typical way of doing it is to throw the ball with success enough to keep the defense honest. Purdue didn't show as much by the way of run defense in game 1 so the staff comes up with a game plan to run the ball down their throat like they did with Hampton. I've seen some great game plans out of the staff and some real klunkers. This was a bad one.

Good analysis. Sometimes, solid tackling and football knowledge beats out flash and awe. I saw what you saw.

I really expected more from the defense.

Open receivers all over the field.
If it wasn't for some really bad drops in the first half, the score could have been worse.

I would also think that,at this level, you should know fundamentals, like the proper way to tackle.
