Is McRae the best all-around RB in Ohio history? He'd get my vote, but my fandom only goes back to about 2000.

Not sure if he's the best, but he's certainly in the running. Bill Hess had some really good RBs on his teams. One that I remember as outstanding from that era was Bill Gary. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in his first year but then tailed off. I think he might have been injured sometime during his second year. He was a man among boys in Ohio's 35-6 win over Kentucky in 1971. There were others too, but he comes to mind quickly as a very good RB in his early years at OHIO.

Mine goes back much farther, and you said all around back, and I'd agree with that!!

well, let's jump right on into this debate...

First, congrats Kalvin, well-deserved. What a complete workhorse for four years!

Who's the best ever? Can't say. Would have loved to see what Chad Brinker might have done if his career wasn't derailed by Brain Surgery and Grobe's departure. What would his numbers have been under Grobe for four straight years?

I think true running back skill, relative to other backs at the D1 level, is very hard to judge. Straight line speed is nice, but not all that critical when it comes to the first 10 yards. How good is your O-line? How good are your schemes? Do you have a passing game to speak of? Honestly, What if Tim Curtis was on a team with even a remotely competent offensive gameplan?

Also, running backs take a beating. Hit on every play, whether running or blocking. Are the ones who go 4 years without a major injury just lucky? Sometimes I think that's part of it.

I never saw Brinker play, what was he like out of the backfield? Obviously in Grobe's offense they didn't throw the ball much, but could he make plays after a catch. Kalvin was amazing on screen and swing passes.

Kalvin is probably my favorite Bobcat I've ever seen play. You never knew when he might bust a big one, but he was a grinder. He gained a lot of tough yards between the tackles.

Total speculation, but I think Brinker would be #1 had, as DFC mentioned, his career not been thrown off by a brain tumor. He could do it all. I'm sure it's not true, but I feel like I saw him throw more touchdown passes in one of the Knorr years than our QBs did.

But as it stands, McRae is the best Bobcat RB I've seen.

I'll take yours and DFC's word for it.

Side note: I never realized how much Kalvin carried the 2007 team. There was only one other player on the roster with over 100 yards rushing, and nobody had more than 1 rushing TD other than Kalvin. On top of all of that, he was 3rd on the team in receptions. He was a WORK HORSE.

Re your question about Brinker. In a 23-17 win over Minnesota, Brinker ran for a TD, threw a TD pass, and caught a TD pass. I think that qualifies as "all around."

Triple option offense can skew things a bit if just looking at stats compared to some more recent backs. But both of them were still darn good.

It would be a tough call between Kalvin and Chad. They both were workhorses.

My favorite Kalvin game was '06 vs NIU. NIU was hyping Garrett Wolfe for the Heisman, and as I recall they were either ranked or were getting votes when we went up there. Wolfe had a monster game -- 196 yds rushing and 2 tds. But Kalvin outdid him -- 106 rushing, 98 receiving and 3 tds.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.
