I created this poll about two years ago, and I thought it would be time to ask the same poll again, to see how time has changed people's responses. This time, per suggestions on the original poll, I have added "all of the above" as an answer, and I have made a couple other minor changes to reflect comments made after the original poll.

Remember that in evaluating what is the most important goal, you might also consider the question from another perspective. If one of the above will never be accomplished, which one would you least want that to be?

The original poll can be found here:

I voted for entertainment value. Ohio bills its self as a school that offers the total college experience. Football plays a part of that with the Homecoming and Parents weekends. The Marching 110 is part of that experience. Regardless if Ohio football didn't generate 1 dollar the university would have football for the entertainment value by itself.

Personally,I don't think its "all of the above".
But,at the same time, its hard to settle on one answer.

Need to do like they used to on multiple choice tests:

Most of the above

Some of the above

1&2,1&3 etc. :-)

How very easy. Just win. Okay.

I want us to be competitive, graduate our players and avoid any scandals. Every so often contend for a championship.

The school is structured to build well rounded graduates who will go on to change the world. The football coach is paid over 500K to win and not just be competitive. I picked winning championships, football players are students as well and they are part of the the president'a an administrators vision for creating well-rounded graduates. I had to separate my emotional attachment to FS and the group to realize that we are in it to win it. If we win, our applications will increase and we will tap into new markets. Also, alumni donations usually increase when teams when allowing the university to do more. We are not paying over a million in coaching salaries to be competitive.

I'm not sure that affirmative action was ever a specific goal of sports, but it has certainly been something it has accomplished. A substantial portion of athletic scholarships do go to minority students, and with the APR requirements, the schools are pushed to make sure that all athletes actually get educated.

I personally know a number of ex-athletes that would not have attended college if not for athletic scholarships, but who have benefited from the education, and have done well for themselves as a result.

Disagree with that take. Agree that sports results in students getting scholarships where they otherwise may not have. But sports is strictly ability based. You can either run fast or jump high, or you can't. No quotas, no skin color, no religious test...

Affirmative action, lol. Affirmative action benefits white women on a whole more than any minority groups. It really has no place in this discussion. Athletic scholarships are not given based on race and minorities don't do better in school because of scholarship. Bringing up affirmative action is a way to discredit certain groups. Maybe we can discuss Rush Limbaugh theory of minorities having extra muscles in another thread.

Allen, what would we have to do to win championships every year? Spend more money than the rest of the MAC on facilities, perks for athletes and higher coaches salaries come to mind. Then there is the obvious rule bending and looking the other way on a lot of recruits to steal them away from bigger programs.

Perhaps affirmative action was a poor choice of words. I know that when I was applying to colleges, sports was specifically mentioned as a way to increase the diversity of the student body. It wasn't mentioned as increasing the diversity in terms of race, just that they wanted a student body made up of people with a variety of backgrounds and a variety of interests. Thus, ability to play football, or ability to play the tuba, or a host of other abilities made each student different, and thus created a diverse student body, and thus an atmosphere much different than if admission were based solely on academic ability.

I still believe sports has served this purpose, either intentionally, or unintentionally. Many people have come to college as a result of sports who otherwise would not have, and have benefited from the education by having successful non-sports-related careers.

To give me an excuse to head to Athens on a beautiful fall day, grill beer brats and drink Jackie O's under the sycamores...or in a less selfish vein...

Represent the university well on and off the field. When you think about it, that choice encompasses a lot. Winning program, educated young men, well-rounded college experience, university exposure, etc.

1. Not embarrass the university with NCAA violations, academic scandals and arrests.

2. Compete consistently for a MAC championship

3. Take as little subsidy as necessary. I'd like to see it in the bottom third for Ohio D1 athletic departments

That, to me, would be a very successful program.

Well.... Careful here. There's some very wrong ways to win championships...

There is no single most important reason in my mind.

My goal as a fan is for the team to consistently be among the top MAC teams while representing the university well both on and off the field.

We have to recruit better athletes and have better competition for positions. You have to always strive to get better. Getting players drafted is a great plus, now we have to build off of that momentum. We also should have a brand, like Florida Gulf Coast being reffered to as Dunk City.

Well, in the 1960s, Dick Biondi, the wild and crazy DJ on WLS in Chicago, who was listened to by practically every teenybopper in a ten state area (including Ohio) would always refer to OHIO as "America Pizza University." When anyone would call in from Athens, Ohio, to request a song, Dick would say, "We got another call from Athens, Ohio, the home of America Pizza University." He would then sometimes go on to explain that we had more pizza places per capita than any other town in America. Don't know if that was true, but that's what he would say. I think he just made it up.

We still have a lot of pizza places in this city, so we could readopt this name! ;-)

Thanks L.C.. As of this post 3 of 38 or 8% chose the MACC as "the most important goal. 30 of 38 or 79% chose; to advertise, to represent well or all of the above over the MACC. So glad Ohio is still not "Enormous State University."

There can only be one champion, so 11 schools will be chanting "wait until next year". If you are not happy if we don't win a MACC, then you're not going to be happy a lot of the time. Hypothetically, if every school in the MAC decided to increase their budget by 5M, upgrade facilities and hire hall of fame caliber coaches, 11 of 12 will still be chanting. You must have some loftier goals than "just win baby".

However, what would Notre Dame be if it wasn't for their football team and Knute Rockne? They would be St. Mary's. But that ship has sailed for us and others like us.

To get fans in the seats in the first half so the fans can leave after halftime.

Would love to see the results without all of the above being a choice. It would give us an idea of what people think. This really doesn't.

The original poll didn't have "all of the above as a choice", and it was suggested that I add it. I guess I can't win. After this poll runs it's course, perhaps I will submit it one more time without "all of the above".
